| Development team. 14:59 - Oct 6 with 2240 views | connell10 | Just got their arse,s handed to them 1-5 at home to Coventry. If we get Cat 1 status i presume we will be playing better teams , if so I can see a lot of really heavy defeats coming our way , unless the standard of players getting recruited improves. | |

| Development team. on 15:12 - Oct 6 with 2124 views | TK1 | Coventry City are Cat 2, by the way. One of the best academies in the country, produces professionals on a regular basis despite lots of competition for talent in West Midlands and the lack of an inside dome. | | | |
| Development team. on 15:13 - Oct 6 with 2105 views | Logman | I wouldn't be overly worried about it. They are regularly putting in schoolboys for their debuts. The objective is in the name, 'Development' team/squad. | | | |

Everyone does that, everywhere. Coventry will have done that too. Chris Ramsey used to go on about doing that as well as a regular reason for losing so often. But as for development: as Kevin Gallen regularly says, year in/year out, no young player develops getting hammered. How will losing 1-5 help a kid develop if he can't get the ball much less keep it, can't make a tackle, can't get a shot away, etc? How does a keeper develop conceding 5? Genuinely interested to know how many current academy graduates playing Championship football played for youth teams that regularly got absolutely tonked. If it's a good number, I'll sit down. I suspect though they were the best players in good, winning teams.
| Development team. on 15:35 - Oct 6 with 1978 views | Northernr | This was a good point discussed on the WLS podcast. If you go to Cat 1 and you're playing Arsenal, Spurs etc every week, while you also want to loan players out where possible, you are going to have to do a serious recruitment job to make sure they're not getting pumped every week. | | | |

| Development team. on 16:35 - Oct 6 with 1697 views | Northernr | So my man at the game says... 11 of the 16 players used are under 18 players. 6 of them played for the under 18s on Saturday morning. 4 were making debuts having only played about 6 games for the u18s, while there were were 5 players with 3 or less appearances for the DS. Only 5 players have made 10 appearances. So it was a very inexperienced team selection Our 18s beat them 5-3 on Saturday while u16s won 1-0.

Can you learn from getting a whipping, I would say the right sorts will. Being at Sheff Wednesday last season didn't do Pierce Charles any harm...

Matters for the young lads though, right? Surely you want them to not like getting beat. ?

Nobody, in their right mind, want to get beat......but all the Club want to see is improvement and development of the players so that they are good enough for, basically the only team that counts in the Club which is, the First Team.
| Development team. on 18:20 - Oct 6 with 1246 views | dmm | How players are selected to play DS games is mysterious. I'm sure there must be good reasons for the young and inexperienced side today but still, why were none of Esquerdinha, Dyke, Sanghrajka, Akindileni, Tarbotton or Kennedy not in the matchday squad? Even just a couple of them would have helped even up the game. | | | |

We were supposed to be playing Rayners Lane in the Middlesex Cup tonight but it got canceled, not sure if it would have made a difference but maybe we'd already made the decision on 2 separate squads for the 2 games and stuck with it. Talking of Tarbotton though, what happened to him? Swear I haven't seen his name since last season

So what’s the alternative then mate after making the decision to start investing in the academy? Just continue meandering along, producing hardly any players of note that can get into our first team? Surely it’s better to at least take the step and then we will develop from there. I’d much rather we tried to improve than just accept our fate. And on the point raised, I think we will get a lot of players from other more established Cat 1 academies that have players (and their parents) that feel “unloved”, out of favour or see it as a long long way away from getting into the first team.
| Development team. on 19:15 - Oct 6 with 1022 views | wortonr | I watched online. One noteworthy thing is how the team clearly follow the playing style of the first team. Of course they don’t have Charles, Edwards etc, but at times they did a passable impersonation! Game was close for most of the first half and their heads didn’t drop until number 4 went in. I thought it was encouraging in many ways given the line up. | | | |

Our goal was scored by a guy called Rayan Kolli. Came on in the 87th minute beat four players then shot from 35 yards, and like a bullet hit the underside of the crossbar, then smashing into the back of the net. Was subbed in the 88th minute, as it appeared that he had run out of puff. He is not the messiah. He is just a very naughty boy !! [Post edited 6 Oct 22:14]
