I'm a tenth rate guitar and piano player and can play drums after a fashion. I remember the old joke - what do they call someone who knows nothing about music but hangs out with musicians ? Answer - groupie ? no, a drummer. Very unfair of course. In the popular music idiot, sorry idiom, I always though Cozy Powell underrated.

At rehearsal once the drummer went for a cigarette. We decided to carry on, with me giving it a go and just one guitar. Started with a simple rhythm on the bass drum, brought in half beats on the snare, started to introduce the odd "tish" on various cymbals. "This isn't too bad" thinks I. Then the singer stops and says to the bass player "You were supposed to come in there." He gestures over his shoulder at me "How the f eck am I supposed to concentrate with that f ecking racket going on?".
I am still Steve but no longer in Dagenham.
