I know he bums Maguire but I’d have had Timori in. Would’ve included Toney for penalties and he’s probably the most similar to Kane. Overall though pretty unsurprising.

Well at least Maddison is in. There's still one round of matches for someone to get injured but when you look at the list of those who have missed out, no real argument from me.

If you're an English midfielder you must wonder what you have to do to get in ahead of Kalvin Phillips whom has made a grand total of 4 appearances this season:

There is no way Maguire or Phillips should be anywhere near that squad. If Southgate runs out Rice and Philliphs in his starting 11 then he has lost the plot . Leaving Toney at home and bringing Wilson is a poor decision IMO. To make a deep run you need goals and Grealish and Foden need to be in that 11 with Kane and maybe Saka also. Reading the replies and seeing Wilson was picked because he is in great form which is fine but Eze is playing his best football since he left us why is he not going. Even if he is not going to see the field its experience for next time which can only push his confidence higher. Southgate might have achieved than lots of his predecessors but he could do more if he dropped his negative playbook ,nobody is watching just go for it

So much $hit thrown at a manager who has had such relative success compared to pretty much all his predecessors...see a load of moaners about already (not here!).
I'd have gone Tomori over either Coady or McGuire...Philips is a lucky boy but won't start anyway...Toney v Wilson was a toss of a coin imho.
Ultimately we're potentially very exciting going forward, but for me are quarters at best with that defence (and it's not like there were many alternatives there).

Wilson is a far better, taking Toney would be similar to picking Fashanu in the late 80s.
Eze should have been in the squad along with Tomori

Agree with above. Not sure I would have had Henderson in, rather have Ward-Prowse there Good to see Maddison in but he won't start Phillips is a surprise as well with his injuries. So would guess we are going into the tournament like the other 2 under Southgate with the attitude it's not to lose, rather than ro win it Perhaps Toney under this betting cloud may have been against him

Bowen, Eze, Barnes and then use Dier as a DM if you absolutely have to.
Bowen, Eze and Barnes nothing like Phillips, They were up against Foden, Maddison, Grealish etc. We don't really have anyone else like him or Rice so he was a no brainer to pick him. Always done well for England as well.
No real shocks in the squad other than Gallagher but he's a decent player and unlikely to play. Toney missed out due to this betting charge but for me Wilson is in such good form had to go with him

Surely Stirling has earned a place on his England track record (incl going into previous tournos off form and performing well).
It's a 26 man squad, doesn't mean he'll start.
Past reputation means nothing if you’re off form. Total waste of a slot if never used because he’s not in form. A tournament is just a few weeks, you have to pick players who are in form.

He wasn't in great form leading up to the Euros either though so I can see why Southgate has picked him

Not my words but worth a read…
“Successful international coaches, though, tend to stick with the tried and tested. The best example was Del Bosque’s approach in 2010. He had desperately tried to placate the warring Barcelona and Real Madrid factions and maintained a delicate balance. Victor Valdes and Pepe Reina had both outperformed Iker Casillas in 2009-10, but Del Bosque was never likely to drop his captain. Andres Iniesta, meanwhile, suffered an injury-hit campaign and struggled for fitness going into the tournament, but Del Bosque stuck with him and was rewarded when Iniesta grabbed the winner in the final.
Germany’s star performer in the final four years later was Bastian Schweinsteiger, by that point a veteran approaching his third World Cup. Schweinsteiger had been badly out of form for Bayern, however – and in truth, his club career never really recovered. But for a month in Brazil, Schweinsteiger was outstanding.
Something similar could be said of Paul Pogba in 2018, who had endured an underwhelming second season for Manchester United and was, some believed, in danger of losing his place in the France side. But Pogba played an intelligent, measured central midfield role throughout France’s successful campaign and was also arguably the best player at Euro 2020 until France’s elimination.
You can also point to Marcello Lippi’s faith in Francesco Totti in 2006 after he’d only recently returned from a broken leg – many doubted he would be fit enough to shine.
And it would take a foolish manager to ignore Ronaldo. Going into World Cup 2002, he’d scored just 10 goals in the previous three domestic campaigns combined because of injury and hadn’t netted for Brazil in nearly three years.”

He'll find his form against Iran and never look back.
England will get to the Quarters I reckon maybe further depending on how the tournament opens out as rarely do all the favourites progress. It's usually the holders that sh*t out first round.
At least Chair is going.

you have to pick your best players, if Kane was off form you'd still take him as he's our best striker. Sterling has been excellent for England for 3/4 years now, would have been madness to leave him out of the squad
I like Toney but 1 goal in his last 4 games and been investigated for betting on football, no way was he getting in over Sterling
