Some awful choices there for me. Wilson will get injured getting into the cab on the way to the airport, surely Toney should have had that spot? Mount should be nowhere near that squad, disappears in games and adds very little ... IMO bowen or a wildcard Eze gets that spot. Same applies with Gallagher, he can't lace Eze's boots. I kind of get the risk of taking taking Phillips, very little cover in that role. I'd certainly be wrapping Kane up in cotton wool over the next few weeks though, seems to be wholly dependent on him....

Not overly bothered, most arguments about England squads tend to be about fringe players who are not likely to play much anyway. Don't really get Gallagher, who I like, but I doubt will offer much at international level. Would have loved Eze to go, and I think Toney probably deserved to go on form this season. Maguire shouldn't be in it - he's clearly at a. ery low ebb. Otherwise, seems fine.
Bare bones.

Nothing too unexpected. Maybe Maguire can be the opposite of John Barnes and be good for England while being poor at his club. Perhaps being away from Utd might help, it doesn't seem the happiest of camps at the moment.
Always good to remember that international teams are not as strong as the top club sides that can cherry pick talent from arond the world. Therefore on paper at least England's squad is as good as any there. I do think we are a little suspect defenisvely though.

Disappointed to not see Benson nor Hedges in the squad. If you’re old enough, you’re good enough.
Our Aussie head coach did the opposite for the Socceroos squad. Left out a heap of experienced players and went for young attacking players like 18 year old Garang Kuol who is on his way to the Toon. We may not win a game in a group with France, Denmark and Tunisia but we may scare a few full backs with our pace and attacking verve. Kuol and Mabil who plays for Cadiz in La Liga make BOS seem slow.
Most Aussies are realistic about our place in the pecking order and are happy just to see our team have a go.

Agree with above. Not sure I would have had Henderson in, rather have Ward-Prowse there Good to see Maddison in but he won't start Phillips is a surprise as well with his injuries. So would guess we are going into the tournament like the other 2 under Southgate with the attitude it's not to lose, rather than ro win it Perhaps Toney under this betting cloud may have been against him
I agree with Henderson. I also thought Nick pope was shocking for England.

Doer and Rice play a defensive midfield role.

Different situation. They can go in with a nothing to lose attitude as nobody really expects them to get out of the group.

I'm not an England fan but Toney's omission seems strange to me. He's been consistent for several seasons now, including the step up to the Premier League - and he can take penalties.
Obviously as a Rangers fan, I'd have Eze in there, but he is far too unpredictable for such a predictable manager as Southgate.

Problem Eze has is that he's up against the likes of Sterling, Saka, Foden, Grealish etc for that attacking midfield position, all of those play in the champions league and have been regulars for England, tough for him to get in at the moment.
On Toney I like him but do think CalluM Wilson is a good choice, was a flip of a coin call on those 2 really and lets be honest if either of them are starting in the world cup we're probbaly not going very far

I'd be very surprised if Kane doesn't pick up a knock at some stage very soon; whereupon Southgate will invariably opt for Rashford over Wilson.
It seems utterly stupid to me not to have given minutes to someone who is potentially going to come on or even be the main striker.
Wilson has played four times for England, the last time was in 2019 and he has not scored for England in four years! Asking him or Toney or Abrahams to step in and step up without blooding them and actually seeing if they have it, is mindboggling.
Not that bothered by the circus if I am honest. I do expect to muster more than the three and a half games watched in 2018, but I fully expect the WC to trail Netflix by some margin for my televisual concentration.

Overall not a too bad squad, defence looks problematic, but like the inclusion of Madison, he has the ability to change games. Southgate needs to be adventurous, but doubt he will be, with getting Grealish and Foden motoring. Think we have some decent attacking options from midfield including Bellingham.

I've absolutely loved the World Cup since 1978 although Espania in '82 was the one where I really took it to the next level and I've always had it as the Copa de Mundial in the back of my head since.
Every 4 years it's all I ever think about for a month.
I've absolutely loved England over the years but admit to some wilderness years with the National Squad due to various reasons.
Never before have i had this level of disinterest and I've only just looked at our squad today. Uninspiring. Where are the mavericks? Where's that Gazza, Hoddle or a Barnes, Beardsley etc to make you think a bit of magic could be just around the corner? As for the World Cup possibly clashing with some early Christmas lunch functions and entertainment...... FFS what has the game come to?
So sad........
Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

I think its going to be the WC that was 'on in the background'.
Then one Sunday after lunch, granny wakes up to watch Songs of Praise only to find its the WC Final on instrad, which we've all forgotten about.
Everyone wakes up, thinks she's lost it as she bangs on about England winning it, until someone looks at their phone and goes 'Oh yeah, you're right nan, it was the final today!'

I was lucky enough to be around for the 66 final as a ten year old, it has hard to convey the sheer joy that permutated when 'our boys' lifted the WC trophy, and to do so against all these players from different parts of the world, you had probably never heard of.
That magic has now gone, any player worth his salt is now playing in Europe, no doubt plucked from the Burkina Faso 3rd division as a 16 year old and lauded the next best thing since sliced bread.
Thats what technology and greed has done to a wonderful sport, there is no mystery to many of the teams, the England team put out will play to not loose, so a reasonably good chance of them being in the latter stages of the tournament, of the others no real mystery, the 'star players are well known as most are playing in Europe every other week and beamed around the world.
Can't say I am totally enamored with Southgate, the odd game England have played exceptionally well but as a rule I feel that the brakes and negative play has held back some of our players especially when reaching the two finals,
I'm like others that some selections are too much on the safe side, you need that bit of mystery with your selections, games can be changed so quickly if taking a few risks, the subs bench is very important and having players that are prepared to take the game by the scruff of the neck in sometimes only a short space of time are now even more important.
After my no doubt boring montage, I am looking at Spain as my fancied team, youngish squad and some may have that bit of 'mystery' that could be an unknown advantage.
No doubt will watch many of games, it's the WC, it's in the blood, but hopefully any future finals a lot more care will be taken on just who gets them.

The defence just looks vulnerable. Maguire is horribly out of form for club and country. Trent is struggling defensively and lacking in confidence. Walker isn't match fit. Shaw is the only left-footed option. I would have liked to have seen Tomori and Burns in the squad. Both are in great form and give you something extra. Tomori would add pace to the defensive line, and bring confidence from winning the Scudetto, as well as knowledge of continental tactics. Burns would bring height and physicality.
Bellingham and Rice aside, the midfield is very uninspiring. I can understand the thought process with Phillips if the intention is to provide backup for Rice. They're the only 2 midfielders naturally suited to the DM role. However, I will be very disappointed (yet unsurprised) if Southgate reverts to playing them both. My gut says that Gareth will play Bellingham and Rice against Iran, and then revert to Phillips and Rice against the stronger nations. I'm not sure what Connor Gallagher has done to merit late inclusion in the squad other than the fact he plays for Chelsea. His form last season for Crystal Palace was much better yet he was overlooked.
Satisfied enough with the forwards. Good to see Maddison get the nod though I suspect he will be a bit part player. I'm yet to be convinced by Marcus Rashford but I can understand the omission of Toney given the FA's ongoing gambling probe.

Well, well, well. Ivan Toney certainly sent a message out today. Great reaction to missing out on a World Cup spot.
Just watched it and he should have scored 4 now that is sending a message .He could still go of course because not only is Wilson struggling but Kane is physically exhausted apparantly .If Kane goes down so will England so Toney should be on that plane IMO

2 goals from 4 chances is a pretty decent return, especially away at Manchester City.
Maddison was subbed after 25 minutes today. Hopefully nothing serious as it would be devastating for the boy having worked so hard to break into the squad.
