Just Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst now. By contrast, seven of the West German team they faced that day are still with us.

It’s a bit like the July day in 1966 because the Germans were lucky to get extra time then too.

RIP George.Condolences to his family and friends.

For extremely fit young men not enough of that generation of footballers seem to make it much past 80. Maybe all the heading of the old footballs. Such a shame.

Bobby with dementia too. CamberleyR do you know who is still going from the rest of the squad.? Terry Paine I think not sure if any others are still with us.

I wonder how many players of that age were smokers, too.

Less than the average for that generation I’d have assumed.

Re-watched this lovely, melancholy doc, just the other day from 1986 called The Boys of 66: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4zjicc.

Amazing to think now those lads so revered now were basically forgotten back then. There's lots to beat Sky over the head about, but one thing Vic Wakeling (who produced that doc) did at Sky was really bring back an appreciation for them: Bobby Moore worked there a lot in the early days, for example.

Anyway, my point was that this doc shows George overcoming cancer in the 80s - and shows how he had a colostomy fitted. Great talker - humble, engaging, funny. Worth a watch. Heartbreaking watching Jack too, he tells a couple of lovely, poignant stories.

Bare bones.

RIP

On the death rate, well surely the fact 7 of the Germans are still going suggest not?

Hard to know as it's easy to focus on footballers because we know what they were doing but the amount of others of a similar age working in whatever it maybe is hard to quantify - or it seems to be.

They did say George Cohen was still sharp until the end however...(heard briefly on talk sport.

Yes, Terry Paine as you say plus Ian Callaghan and George Eastham and that's it.

The vast majority of the Ipswich 1978 FA Cup winning team were smokers & I doubt that they were much different to other clubs. The air was thick with smoke when they had a piss up in the pub I used!

Hunter & Beatie were 30-40 a day men. Alan is still going strong, while Kevin died of a heart attack.

I remember watching a documentary on Alex Young of Everton (The blond vision) in the 60's. He ran out onto the pitch before the game & at half time with a cigarette in his hand!

I met George Cohen once back in the early 70's. He was the guest of honour at the awards ceremony in Fulham Town Hall for the Lillie Rd Recreation League. Our under 12 5-a-side team , had won one of the cup competitions and I, as captain, was handed the trophy by George. He was a lovely guy and I was so proud at school when I was able to tell my mates that I'd received the trophy from a World Cup winner. Little did I think back then, that 50 years later there would still only be 11 English footballers that had played in a World Cup Final. RIP George.

I've no idea why but Cohen was my favourite of that team when I was a kid, maybe Moore as well. I was born four years after and growing up in London I could name them all. Maybe somebody told me a story about him or maybe I read something, but I always had him down as Gentleman George.

God rest him. Ar dheis Dé.

Born in Fulham and spent his whole career at the Cottage. Mad to think the only trophy he ever won was the World Cup. England’s men’s team have still never won a trophy without a Fulham player in the side.

As it says on his statue: Fulham player. World Cup winner. Gentleman. RIP George.

It seems to be a constant celebrity passing currently and sadly it seems the very greatest of all time is on his way out also.

Pele himself !!!
.
I knew more about his nephew Ben Cohen than George.

Certainly must have eaten their shredded wheat in that family !!!

When I did the March for men for prostate cancer we finished at Wembley, and we had a choice of receiving our medals from Ray Clemence or Sir Geoff Hurst.Everyone seemed to be joining the Sir Geoff queue,so I joined the other one instead.I missed my only chance to have my photo taken with an England World Cup winner probably, but after walking 26 miles I just wanted to sit down.

As a nipper in the 70’s I watched a testimonial match the England 1966 team played in. Thing is I can’t remember much about anything else. I think it was played at White City and my old man (RIP) said I met all the players but I’m not even sure who they played. However meeting George is the only thing I can clearly remember. He took time to speak to me and I told him my favourite player was Stan Bowles. Ever since I had a soft spot for him. RIP George.

I think that was the Tony Ingham Testimonial. It was played at LR and QPR won 5-2 with Marsh scoring a hattrick IIRC.

The grass is always greener.

I met him at Craven Cottage the day we lost 6-0. My eldest managed to blag some corporate tickets and he was hosting. A lovely fella and sympathetic to our trauma on the day . RIP
