That's one thing I do actually admire the French for. They absolutely don't take any crap when they think their government is shitting on them from a great height. The British are too bloody accepting and apathetic for their own good.

Karl Marx said we‘d be the first. In reality, today the leader of the Labour Party said that Thatcher was right. Appreciate this forum has a spectrum of political opinion, but that can’t be a sign of a healthy and wide ranging democracy surely? [Post edited 24 Mar 2023 7:32]

The expectations of workers these days are way beyond what they were 30 years ago. French schools used to have a two hour lunch break where entire schools go home to their families and Spain has in past closed up shop for Siesta afternoons. And all these randoms are desperate to live in the UK.

| France…. on 07:19 - Mar 24 with 2348 views | essextaxiboy | Its not retirement age , its state pension age . Put money away for your pension as early as possible , take an interest in where its invested and its performance . Learn a little of investing and if you are younger , take a little risk . if someone runs it for you , ask questions . Look at it as saving for the longest holiday ever, or if you paff out leaving your loved ones comfortable . Live modestly in retirement and you can pack up , or at least just do a couple of days when you choose ... not a bunch of politicians | | | |

| France…. on 07:27 - Mar 24 with 2325 views | Paddyhoops | Can’t imagine how we would manage in this country if it was lowered to the French retirement age. Mate of mine recently retired as a civil servant at 60 . Cracking pension . I jokingly said to him . Just as well I’m working another 8 years to subsidise it. He wasn’t impressed. Advances in medical science means we’re all living longer. That takes money supplied by taxpayers . Surely the same model applies to the French . I would much to prefer to retire at 65 and I’m sure with a fairer system where the wealth is shared out a bit more it could happen but I can’t see that happening any time soon. | | | |

I’ll leave the thread with this… 10% of the world’s GDP is kept offshore hoarded in tax havens. Doing nothing. We can absolutely afford pensions at 60 if we wanted to change things. [Post edited 24 Mar 2023 8:11]

The public sector pensions are a problem. Some working in this sphere will retire at 50, and be retired, and taking out, for a long time. The IOM has, per head of population, a massive public sector, their paid-in pension pot is running dry (It has a shortfall of billions on a population of 85000), and is being topped up by normal working people, many of whom can't afford a pension other then the meagre state one, for which they are having to work longer to receive.

The way money is distributed and spent*, we should be living more equitable and fulfilling lives, for sure. *I'm not proposing Marxism though, I've seen how that works when it's filtered through the prism of power!

Paddyhoops and DistortR make very valid points, why are those who work in private industry subsidising the pensions of those who work in public services? It’s simply unfair.

I have a certain admiration for the French . The spirit of the revolution and all that but the days of the 5 hour lunches are a thing of the past now. Living longer means working longer. Have to say the private sector do get a raw deal and it is a bit galling when somebody called “Steve” introduces himself on Pointless as a retired 54 year old police officer who plays golf a lot while I ponder another day of Arthritis in my hands from years of plastering. . I know I know… should have worked harder at school!
