| Woke police edit Gareth’s interview 00:48 - May 20 with 6637 views | Jules4367 | On the south coast around Bournemouth and on the Isle of Wight there are natural features called Chines which derives from Medieval English and earlier and refers to a crack or narrow opening! Also derived from this path is an old English word for a brief slit of light and it Is an age old idiom that refers to a weakness in armour which one would be aware of or look for to possibly exploit as well as the sound made when glasses are brought together in a toast. The madness of wokism is that there are word police who are fearful that words may be misinterpreted and hence the text for Gareth’s interview substitutes asterisks when he uses this old English word- in the correct context- solely because seeing the word may cause offence! He used a phrase with absolutely no racial meaning, slur or intent but it has been censored by the text police ! Are we now to remove every word from our dictionaries and all there derivatives that ‘could’ be deemed ‘offensive’ even if it is used in the correct context and with absolutely no remote link to and pejorative or racist intent in the age old phrase?! I’m getting old and the world’s gone mad!! [Post edited 20 May 2023 1:02]

| Woke police edit Gareth’s interview on 10:17 - May 20 with 4728 views | Loyalitat | Personally stopped listening to any interviews held with GA as they are largely garbled and incoherent. Whilst I agree with you in that the phrase uttered by him is old English, there also needs to be an appreciation that it is just that: old. The English language constantly evolves and I'm in no doubt that for younger generations, that turn of phrase will not form part of their every day vernacular, so an explanation is needed for that particular audience and others. That per se isn't "policing" and neither is it being "woke". The mere fact that you, along with certain sections of the media have co-opted the woke term, albeit used incorrectly and deliberately so, shows that language doesn't stand still. Rest assured, they no longer use that term now that it's associated with a certain age demographic that's largely male. What can't be disputed is that the key word in that phrase, is to this day used pejoratively, has racial meaning, does cause offence and hurt to those on the receiving end. It never ceases to amaze me why some people, to whom such a word clearly has no detrimental impact on their lived experience, still see it fit to be judge and jury on such matters. It is disappointing to see some posters make light of the word in question. It could be argued that your confected rage embodies the very traits which you attribute to others. Hold on a minute, are you actually saying that the phrase 'a chink of light' has a racial meaning? Of course not, that would be utterly stupid. So what you omitted was the word 'context'. Unless you actually believe that any word, even taken out of context, should be subject to some kind of 'sensitivity judgement'. I'm not going to use the word woke to describe your answer, but you seem to be entirely missing the point here. Also, 'confected rage' - that's a purely subjective and perjorative judgement of the OP and tbh, comes across as hypocritical, since you are also 'embodying the the very traits you attribute to others'. | |

Yep the young of today don’t understand context. My stepdaughter once pulled me up and said she was offended as I used the word “fag” to describe a cigarette, it literally took me half an hour to explain that if I called a couple of blokes holding hands by it at name then yes I should rightly be pulled up for it, I also explained that it was a word used in public schools as a name for “servants” for the prefects. I said it’s not offensive if used in the correct manner, it took a while to sink in.

I said that there was nothing offensive about the saying, but also that there was nothing wrong in explaining the meaning of the old English word. The same word has been used as a pejorative so there's nothing wrong in drawing that distinction to an audience that may not be aware of its use in such phrases. [Post edited 20 May 2023 12:39]

Back in 1971 4 of us landed in New York for our 1st in the US and late that evening down in Maryland somewhere we wandered into a bar packed full of blokes watching the Red Skins playing American football and drinking beers. We asked for 4 pints which raised a few confused eyebrows and then "and a packet of fags please" which turned about every head in the place, and the noise level down to near zero. It was only much later that night and after 2 of my mates had to reject amorous proposals that we realised we'd walked into the local gay bar. [Post edited 20 May 2023 12:44]

| Woke police edit Gareth’s interview on 15:08 - May 20 with 4218 views | LazyFan | It's not about words. It's the context they are used in. Chink in the Armour, I don't think its racist in the context it is meant to be used. However, let us suppose someone was making commentary on say, a Basketball player who happens to be oriental in heritage, was playing really well but someone noticed that they may have a weakness in their game. If they then used this phrase could they be merely making commentary on a weakness in their game or could it be a sly, clever racist slur that they have sneaked into their commentary? Usually, I would give them the benefit of the doubt, but unfortunately, the right-wing press has done this so many times that I believe we can no longer do that. Typical right-whingers have once again ruined it for all with their right-wing woke ways! Especially when it comes to footballers, remember the Sterling gun tattoo snide remarks whereby they were trying to put the old stereotype of a footballer who is black thinking he's some kinda gangsta on him. Later it turns out it was nothing like that, of course. Ian Wright getting headlines from the Sun back when he was playing of "he mugged the defence off" and so on. I think the right-wing press well has form for doing this for many decades now and as a result even if others do not mean it, we have to be careful now as it gives the right-wing press the camouflage to do a John Terry. Therefore people should be careful in what context they use words and clarify them if they make a mistake. But if we are talking Chink in the Armour of some medieval historical battle tactic, then this seems okay in context. If we start to use these phrases in other contexts that could infer racism even if unintended, then I am not sure it's woke to call that out. It's actually common sense and hard pragmatism against racism whether intended or not. Zero tolerance means zero tolerance, not some John Terry let-off. | |

As passionate about the "Protect the right to freedom of speech" argument as I am - This particular occurrence is a bit lame. We can't write the word fcuk on here without swapping letters around, it's the same concept/thing. It's just a filter. But then, I suppose it does involve QPR, and I doubt we'd be allowed to discuss the topic of "censorship of views we don't like" here if it didn't, so there's also that.

Yes I was until my son (I said I was old) explained the filters and that it has been referenced as the "S****horpe Problem' (see Wikipedia) whereby filters are apparently set to look for a string of letters without context! So, yes I saw the phrase regarding chink of light at the end of a tunnel as having been policed by a human as opposed to a filter and sorry about that, I didn't know! But it does show how we are split and not everything that appears to be spelled as a perjorative term or curse word actually is! Sometimes (and with greater frequency I fear) people 'assume' that the party was wrong and or offensive to use a term which actually has no relevance to other individuals. When this all kicked off late 70's, with people not allowed to use the term 'chairman','Spokesman' because it was 'sexist', there was a time that the reference to access covers in the street we call 'manholes' was required to be changed - as it too was deemed sexist- despite the fact that the 'man' was actually a corruption of 'maintenance' hole! That's where it all began and ever since, strangely pertinent, I too have been using the word 'holes' ever since, but putting the Old English (Saxon and Nordic) word for rear/ behind / buttocks in front! ...and yes, Blackgang Chine IS still operating! Very frustrating experience growing up in Scunthorpe circa 1996-2001, early days computer lessons, early versions of Microsoft Word. Scunthorpe, like Stoke, is actually an amalgamation of five villages (Brumby, Crosby, Ashby, Yaddlethorpe... Froddingham I think) and there was an idea for a while that they should change the name to the largest of those, Yaddlethorpe. A "keep the cnt in Scunthorpe" campaign was launched and won You get weird results from swear filters etc. Our World Cup sweepstake kept blowing up on me on here, wouldn't post etc, and I couldn't figure it out at all until...
