Charlie Austin - The Numbers Breakdown 10:35 - Feb 4 with 2025 viewsAntti_Heinola

Have I got better stuff to do? Probably. But here we go - I've always said Austin was our most complete striker since Les, as he scored every type of goal - only Furs rivals him, really, in the last 25 years. Do the facts bear this out? I broke down his goals. I haven't included penalties in his '18 yard box' stats. Headers also counted as first touch goals.

50 goals:

HEADERS: 16
LEFT FOOT: 5
RIGHT FOOT: 29
PENALTIES: 9
6 YARD BOX: 16
18 YARD BOX: 19
OUTSIDE THE BOX: 6
AFTER SUCCESSFUL DRIBBLE: 6
FIRST TOUCH: 27
VOLLEYS: 1

Key stat for me to show what a pure striker he is: of his 41 goals from open play, 27 were first touches. The mark of a great striker imo.

Bare bones.

Stat that stands out for me there and surprised me a bit , is his relatively low headed goals count. He seems determined to address that 'deficit' this time around

It will be interesting to see who takes the penalties when Charlie and Dykes are on the pitch. I would let Dykes continue with them as he has a perfect record so far, but he'll have to wrestle the ball off Charlie.

16 out of 41 non-penalties?
that's pretty high isn't it?!

Bare bones.

I think for the sake of Dykes confidence, Austin would leave them for Dykes.

Then again, the manager might make the decision and might choose Charlie. Will be interesting to see what happens when the occasion arises.

Yeah - 40% or so of his goals are headers. Even Sir Les would struggle to beat that.

I'm going to pat myself on the back (nothing changes) and point that I've been saying getting him back should have been our number one plan this summer past.

Been a lot of rubbish spoken about (a) him being a crock (b) that his all round game is poor.

He's as strong as an Ox and he is easily one of our best outfield players even if you take out finishing. He led the line in the Prem. He can play.

Apologies if this is a spackman, but this is another good interview with Charlie on talksport a few hours after the watford game.

Even bigger apologies that you'll have to listen Jason Kunty as well!

Should have been.

If we want the best young players to come through then surround them with proven professionals.

That is a big thing for us having players like Austin who can set standards for the others to aspire too. Rangel was superb for that apparently

Needs to get just the one in off his arse ... then he is the complete centre-forward.

I doubt we'd have got him for the same deal or even at all in the summer. WBA liked to use him as an impact sub and it was only after he hadn't done much in the Prem and maybe the new manager didn't fancy him that we were able to bring him in. I should imagine WBA are also covering at least half of his wages as we're not in the £60k pw bracket, even for loan strikers.

But I agree a blend of youth and experience, particularly with older loan players, is ideal for us.

I did notice that he has a smile on his face most of the time. Sometimes a player will take less money in his twilight years just to play, be happy and feel appreciated.

I've been thinking about it. I do think other clubs will definitely offer him more than we can if he stays fit. But I also think we *could* possibly offer a healthy seven-figure signing on fee and a wage of say 15k per week, on a three year deal. It's not out of the question.

Bare bones.

There were two that i generously gave to feet that were more like shin/knee/thigh, but i couldn't tell. So he's probably ticked that off too!

I keep thinking of Billy Sharp giving up bigger money to go back to Sheffield United a few years ago and hoping it happens with Austin coming back here.

For someone of Charlie's Ability he should be heading the penalties in.

indeed

blimey how emotions can change fast in football. i wish we had fans in attendance, we'd be absolutely unstoppable at home in normal times with Charlie back, sucking the ball in at least once per game with the sheer will of the crowd alone

For context...

Around 18% historically have been headers (presumably midfielders a little lower, defenders quite a bit higher so maybe this is about right for strikers)
