When I was a kid at QPPS, meals were provided by London County Council, and consisted mainly of mashed potato, something called pease pudding, often a slab of liver (no gravy even), and for dessert, sago or tapioca. My school days were happy, but I grew up to dislike intensely those revolting meals. So no mash for me under any circumstance.

Fish and chips all the way, in a Latimer Road stylee.
Pie and mash, easy to walk into a trap. A West Ham mate used to insist on taking us for an authentic east end version, the liqueur was overwhelming and not in a good way. As a kid a pie was invariably ruined by a piece of kidney breaking between your teeth.

Cod and chips twice... . . . . . . . . . . I heard you the first time.
Traditional pie and mash from a pie and mash shop is always a disappointing 6/10. A good quality pie in a pub, however, with lovely mash and onion gravy, is an 8-9/10 affair.
But you can’t beat a really good haddock and chips with loads of vinegar. Best take-away going when it’s done properly (which it usually isn’t in London).
Fulham FC: It's the taking part that counts

Neither.
Both batter and pastry are the equivalent of dressing a fine woman in a woolly dressing gown.
best of both worlds there Brian, but without the risk of arrest and public humiliation................... God, I've lived on the Isle of Man too long, I'm turning into a native

I use to go to Manzes in Peckham then started going to Goodaeds in Greenwich. Pie & Mash is good for a quick lunch on the go, but decent fish and chips always wins.

Must get to a box one day. What passes as a pie on the concourse is pretty dreadful - contents almost liquid and searingly hot.
Bite gently, hold piece between your teeth, mouth open and suck cold air in before consumption. It’s the only way to stop the Balti welding itself to the top of your mouth and leaves only minor burns to the throat.

Yeah the thought of pie'n mash is always better than the eating. Cod, chips and mushy peas for me.
