Really sad, was the voice of football for me growing up. A great commentator and an unbelievable passion for football. What a loss.

Very sad. Obviously the commentator of our only FA Cup Final(s) appearance to date - and many other great Rangers moments in that era (the Highbury semi-final). RIP John Motson.

Dicky Davies last week and Motty this week.
2 gods of tv sport and the voices of my childhood.

I hate getting old

Motty and Moore, the voice of football for me growing up, modern day commentators need to take a leaf out of their books, no screeching or histrionics, and Motson used to do serious research on the games he was commentating on whether it was a world up final or a non league side in the FA cup.
RIP

RIP to John Motson. It would be good if any of today's men had a fraction of the ability of Motty, Brian Moore & Barry Davies!

It doesn't really matter, but the semi final highlights were on ITV with Brian Moore as the commentator & so it was Brian who covered our semi & final. He also was the man describing the last match of the season victory over Leeds in 1976.

RIP Motty... so many great memories... btw absolutely spot on Loftboy... I would also add Barry Davies to the list of class comms from the 70's and 80's.

Totally agree apart from Ian darke all the other commentators are horrible and have this habit now of screeching a players name before they shoot on goal they are all looking for that agueroooo moment
As a kid watching grandstand on Fa cup 3rd round day is how I remember Motty he was really good in the eighties
RIP

Schum mishtake schurely!

See ya Motty. You were good and a bit mad.

On the bright side, one less Chelsea fan on the planet.

Like others the voice of my childhood football, not just on the telly but how many FIFA games did he do? Probably less than I think but I always think of him as the voice of FIFA and Barry Davies as the voice of Actua Soccer.

Sad times. RIP Motty.

Dicky D and now Motty - footballs finest nerd who also happened to be a great commentator, along with Barry Davies.

RIP Motty

That Vicky Sparks could learn a thing all two from Motty and Barry.

And I'm fairly certain that Ipswich was his club!

I can't recall if his family came from Bury St Edmunds or moved there during his childhood, but he was very pro Robson's boys.

Maybe the real story is John Motson supported everyone. He certainly seemed a nice enough bloke that really he just wanted everyone to win.
