Old Geezers' Bus Pass 21:12 - Jan 14 with 3503 viewscolinallcars

Much talk about reforming it. I only use mine for pub crawls ( I never drive if I've had say, 7 or 8 pints.)These passes are a boost to daytime economy.
Just heard Labour councils are against reform, so looks like they'll stay.
What thinkest thou ?

Since retiring from the cab trade two years ago I use mine all the time and haven’t felt the slightest need to own a private vehicle, with all the associated aggravation, since. Gets me out and about spending money and seeing London from a completely different perspective. What’s not to like? If we’re serious about getting people out of cars this sort of thing should be encouraged more. In an ideal world public transport would be free (although funding this is obviously another question) and there’s clearly an argument to be had about including younger people. I think the appeal for me is more to do with the ease with which you can get around, rather than the fact that it’s free, without having to own a goddamn smartphone.

They are brilliant, bus stop with shelter 5 minutes from our front door, regular buses Into Oxford or we can drive Into the Park and Rides In Oxford and get anywhere we want for free.

I'm not after a money free life nor Is the Missus but I started work on a building site at the age of 16 and finished working at the age of 68 some 52 Years later, no big deal I know but I've done my time and paid my Income tax and NI as has my Missus so we'll take our free bus pass and my free prescription medication and my NHS operations.

Anybody wants to take our free bus passes away gets my pick axe handle right onto the top of their bastard heads.

Leave us alone.

Folk like you have earned it and deserve it. I have no qualms about paying taxes to ensure you continue to enjoy it. The problem is there are many who didn't earn it but are entitled just the same.

For goodness sake, Ted, stop sitting on the fence .

As I now live in Edinburgh - make of that what you will - I am fortunate enough to have a free bus pass even though I'm "just" 61. Even better, the bus service here is phenomenal plus the bus pass can be used on the tram.

PS: A relative who is in her late 80s and who also lives in Edinburgh steadfastly refuses to have a bus pass because she thinks it would betray her age. Sadly, her face and physical state rather give the game away, but then she is full of quirks, like insisting on driving all the way to Yorkshire to get her Christmas roast even though her daughter in law has pointed out that exactly the same bird is available in her local Tesco .

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

In the future when children are taught about the revolution, they'll learn it started with a bloke called Edward on the No. 7 bus!

Biggest misconception about the provision of 'free' stuff, is that it isn't free, someone has to pay for it. The problem western societies have is that in the past, the OAP population was a smaller demographic that didn't live long into dotage. Now, OAPs are a sizeable and growing percentage of the population that live longer, and those of the working ages decreasing proportionately. That's before we consider how AI might render many working people jobless in time.

It's a total clusterfook coming down the tubes that will affect more than bus passes. People have paid into the 'social contract' to fund other generations, in full expectation that when it's 'our' turn, we'll get the same benefits. It might not. Edward, keep wielding that pick axe handle!

I think its worth noting that free travel for eligible people in London costs the London Boroughs over 300 million quid a year. This is what they have to pay TFL and then take into consideration that a lot of people don't use them that much especially in outer boroughs as they have cars. Also some retired people are quite prosperous and don't really need them.I know many.

I'm still working and use mine all the time in London during the working week and over weekends. Tubes, trains (OverGround/Thameslink/Lizzie Line) and buses.

I like having it, of course, but, really it should be means tested and given to those (young, minimum wage, unemployed) who actually need it.

I get mine next March and I doubt I’ll be using it much. The buses in Suffolk are so unreliable that you can’t guarantee that you’ll get home again if you go out for the day.
I might be tempted to hop on one from Marble Arch though if I’m struggling to walk from Liverpool st for home games.

The problem with means testing pensioners is similar to what happened with the winter fuel payments. Not a good look to be seen to be hassling pensioners about free bus travel and I'd be amazed if this happened as whichever party does it will be despised. It's not like buses cost much to travel on in London (capped at just £5.25 a day). Kids under 11 travel free already and whenever I'm on the bus half the people seem to get free rides by badgering the driver anyway!

Be careful you don't lose the pass. I lost mine last year and couldn't get replacement online as it said didn't recognise my details. It took 5 days to get through on the phone. £15 for replacement. which is fair enough.

I used to get the bus from Blythburgh to Southwold which was always on time except sometimes one would be cancelled.
I was in Walberswick one day and a bus was parked with the driver sitting on a bench, looking out to sea and having a fag.
I said I'd like his job, He replied “there's a lot of stress mate”

I love it but must admit I could not believe you get this at 60 when most of us are still working.

I believe loads use it and it is a real boost for the London economy. However, it probably should come into play in line with the state retirement age.

But not for another few years please!

It is a bit of a mess that in Wales, Scotland and N Ireland you can get a pass at 60 but in England it's state pension age (apart from London).

Another 7 years for me before I qualify, unless I move!

people pay for these thru taxes and local taxes, many have paid into the system so should get their pass, what some may not know is the freedom pass has a rose on it, this means it is available on most buses in england not just london . may oaps use theirs to take grandkids to school so mum and dad can work and not ponce off the state , and you get all transport on the "connections map@ including national rail, my staff pass doesn't , i think they should keep it .
if tfl and others worried about the cost, CLAMP DOWN HARD ON FARE DODGERS

When I do catch the bus, which I do quite often as I'm well into my 70s, it is full of pensioners and mums with 2 young children struggling with shopping. If they took away the bus pass they would also scrap the bus service due to lack of passengers.

The solution is to make parking fees prohibitively expensive and use the income to subsidise and improve local transport. Very few people genuinely need to drive and if they do they should be penalised accordingly.

We've got the pass in Hampshire, as over retirement age. We live in a large village with a bus that goes through it, once an hour or less, to Bournemouth. The last bus back is at about 5.20pm. Hence, it's not very useful. We have used it a fair bit in London, Chester, Plymouth, Cambridge and maybe one or two other places.

Hence at home we drive everywhere, including to Loftus (Road). It's two hours on a good day. Tried the train once and it was packed with rugby fans, so we stood crushed nearly all the way home. It was much more expensive than driving, not any quicker and we had to pay a little for parking at the station too.

We might try it again in August as the roads are very busy then.

Got my Over 60 Oyster earlier this year - love it. I don't bother driving at all now if I can do it using public transport, walking or a combo of both. Driving in London is soul destroying these days.
