Was there malicious intent in the OP? If not, then it isn't racist, it's an interesting observation and no different to a discussion about the first black player to play for QPR. |  |

While that can often be the case I really don’t think there’s anything to see here. The OP doesn’t seek to make stereotypical or negative judgements about an entire group of people based on the colour of their skin.
For me it falls into interesting and legitimate ‘quiz question’ territory. I suppose a particularly determined ‘offence-taker’ might argue that there’s something of the ‘Victorian freak show’ about it but, on the whole, I think Kensalriser’s post nails it perfectly.
I might ask some of my black friends and acquaintances their opinion in due course. Insulated by ‘white privilege’ I only know about the daily ‘microaggressions’ they experience because they tell me.
Just a couple of quick examples: the Gooner son of a friend of mine, a charming, hard-working lad, wouldn’t say boo to a goose, has a shoebox full of stop and search notices at home, the legacy of growing up in Camberwell and being black and taller than average.
And a Spurs mate, black, now the provider of learning opportunities for young people in south London but who previously sold soft furnishings to dowager countesses in a well-known department store, would often be told, “Oh, you’re so nice. I wish they were all like you”.
Anyway, back to the original point: I imagine the OP’s caveat about ‘not intending to be racist’ was simply an effort to acknowledge the sensitivity of these issues and I wonder if it would have provoked any reaction at all if it hadn’t even been mentioned. | | | |

I'm on the liberal end of the spectrum and agree that most sentences starting "I'm not a racist but..." normally are indeed racist.
But the rest of your assertion is just plain silly. To be aware of race is not to be racist.
To give just one example, the census seeks to find out numerical information about ethnicities, I don't think anyone would argue that is racist. For all you know the OP might think its a good thing that greater opportunities have opened up for more black people to have successful careers than a generation ago. I despise racism but calling it out where it probably doesn't exist actually really undermines the fight against racism, because it alienates the very people anti-racists should be trying to speak to. | | | |
