Dreat article.

Vitamin D is the only supplement I take and has been noted by my GP in blood tests that it's in the 'normal' range as a result.

It's always noisiest at the shallow end

Very good read.

I never understood how that "K-Tape" could possibly work so it's good to see a doctor saying it is nonsense.

The power of groupthink. Everyone worried that if you don’t follow the crowd you’ll be left behind.

I’m all for exploring complementary therapies including nutrition and psychological approaches, but there has to be some evidence base for it. It’s the latest big thing or we’ve always done it that way are neither very good ways to judge effectiveness.

Ice baths stop your muscles hurting. That's it. The Guardian's science desk loves nothing more than pointing at a new development and kissing its teeth and declaring that there's little evidence for it yet. There's little evidence that standing a metre away from an exploding hydrogen bomb is bad for your health.

Interesting read.

Back before the whole MAGA thing, I used to listen to Joe Rogan's podcast. Don't judge. I watch a lot of MMA and so his was the podcast to go to for that sort of thing. Anyway, he had a supplement company called Onnit and he'd always go on about whatever stuff they were selling. And then it'd be like 'I've start taking [whatever] and now I've got so much more energy.'

Well, you were taking all sorts of shit before. And that was giving you energy/recovery/whatever. So how can this be giving you even more. Like how do you even judge that?

Back when I was doing Muay Thai I took a bunch of things but always had the nagging feeling they were doing eff all. So I stopped and I didn't feel any different. And why would it?

These days I take a little vitamin D and I have no idea why.

As for football. Eat well, train hard and play 4-4-2 and see what happens. It's got to be better than all this 'false 9' bollocks.

Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. He runs like a cheetah, his crosses couldn't be sweeter. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore.

'The game is anti science'. Not shocked when you see some of the absolute cnts involved in it.

As she says alot of it is placebo. You got a young bloke on £100k a week demanding something be done about his sore hamstring, stick a bit of tape on it and that will hopefully shut him up.
Rest and nutrition has worked hundreds of thousands of years to repair the hunan body.

I’ve just taped up the bridge of my nose and rubbed some Vick into my work shirt. My roses have never looked so good.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Reminds me of anytime you hear a GP in their private lives discuss common problems. Drink water, get good sleep, eat well.

Irony of the message is it is not intellectual at all, it’s the very common sense most ‘football man’ ‘no tippy tappy stuff’ types claim to believe in. Until they’re a manager and then suddenly Big Sam wants a cryochamber

I know of someone on a retainer at a premier league club purely cos at an event he showed the owner how to put player reports into AI to summarise them in passing

A lot of things feel like placebos to make the player/athlete feel that they are getting better.

Doctor of Philosophy is just what PhD means, the PhD will be any subject - presumably sports science or psychology of whatever she has.

*edit, I checked. She has a PhD in Sports Psychology.

I understand what a PhD is. The post I replied to mentioned they would be interested to know what a Doctor thought about the use of kinetic tape, she isn't an MD, if that makes a difference?

Being a Dr in Philosophy, she could probably help me understand why I'm thinking about this

*edit she did a BSc in Sports Psychology, which is the thing before the PhD

I'm not trying to belittle her, just think its interesting when you see someone, like Dr Gillian McKeith being presented on TV with the same gravitas as Dr Xand, talking about similar subjects when only one of them is a medical doctor

"You got a young bloke on £100k a week demanding something be done about his sore hamstring".

Apply a block of cheese to it. That's the Felix Magath way .

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

I don't know why the journalist is stating that vitamin C is usually short in our diets. It's not, and it's especially not if you're an elite athlete following nutritional advice. Vit C is in pretty much all fresh fruit and vegetables, including potatoes, and you don't need much. So unless you never eat any fruit and veg, you'll be absolutely fine.

Not true. There's research-based factual evidence and there's bullshit. Experts will only quote the former.

Research is all well and good, but people come to faulty conclusions all the time, and it's more often because the people collecting the data for the experts have no idea what they're doing, than because the experts are bad experts. Be ten times as sceptical of data as you are of science.

Usually data is collected with some purpose.

But, if you look at a recent QPR example.

BW created his 90% availability by discounting players injured before the season started and counting players who might have been fit enough to play 10'
Or, widening the scope to include kids and ladies teams, if the data suits the intended result

So, a report requester might go to a data analyst to say "draw me a graph that proves X"
And the research works backwards
