Just back from a depressing lunchtime crawl.
Three of the pubs, I was the only punter. The other three just a couple.
When I worked in Hammersmith there were some pubs you could barely get the doors open, they were so full.
Even in the main part of the Broadway there are pubs that don't open at all lunchtime - Stonemasons, Andover, Dartmouth, I think, and the pub in the Broadway centre.
I'm sure it used to be that if pubs didn't open for licencing hours, they would lose their licence.
That situation obviously doesn't obtain now.

Times change. Either people don't have the money or they don't have the time. And then if they do have the time and money it's more than likely that they have other tastes. Weekday/lunchtime boozers soon to become museums I would say. [Post edited 10 Sep 17:17]

Back when I was an apprentice plumber back in 87/88, I worked for Godfrey Klage who were based near the crown and sceptre. Anyway, the lads would quite regularly go to the Coningham for "lunch" for three or four hours, before driving off to the next job.

a few of us started early in the prince of wales, dalling road, then popped over to the thatched house before the boro game saturday, both food pubs, but we still ended up in the askew.After the game one in the conningham, and onto the vic.

i live in shepherds bush, so i've drank in just about every pub from shepherds bush to hammersmith, and thats recently, match and non matchdays.
but one pub i have'nt been in for at least 5 years is the sindercombe social. | |

Its very sad the state of this but it's not just the big cities.
Some very beautiful pubs down in West Sussex where my parents live are abandoned buildings.
It just feels like everything is going downhill.

Interesting topic. Three old friends and I recently went to a pub in the very heart of Aylesbury, at about 9pm on a Saturday night, and there were only about ten punters in it. That's a pub that used to be rammed 25 years ago. |  |

Remember long lunches working in the city in the late 90's early 2000's. Balls Brothers, The Lamb in Leadenhall not sure how useful I was in the afternoons though. It was also before the explosion in the number gyms, most people I know will now head to the gym or to a workout class rather than the pub and rightly so to be honest.
Reckon there are fewer jobs working shifts, fewer people finishing work early mornings and going for a drink. | | | |

True that. Another nail in the coffin is kids in them. To me, most pubs have become a sort of McDonalds that do a side-line in ale. I spent a few minutes waiting to get served in a pretty empty pub last week whilst the barlady was making 4 lattes for a table. | | | |

I work in the drinks industry, there was a big push last year to try to raise the profile of the plight of pubs. It’s a real shame. The stat last year was one a day closing.
I’d also add, as the costs have crept up, younger people just don’t get on it as much anymore. They say those in their 40s are the last generation of big drinkers.
And if you look at the proliferation of gyms on the high street, I think they’ve also contributed socially and culturally by silently usurping the pub as a meeting place, I actually think they’re the modern day equivalent of a night club as depressing as that may sound to some. here in Texas, most bars are busy day and night, theres always some sport on whether its baseball at lunchtime, NFL started last night, Ice Hockey and basketball start next month. even at a Chilis they were showing televised cornhole lol But they don't have the character the UK boozers have for sure. I went into the princess Victoria Uxbridge road last October, Thursday lunchtime and not a soul in there. so sad |  |

There has been a cultural shift, particularly around lunchtime drinking, but price is the biggest factor. There's a few youngsters at my cricket and darts teams, and they all like a pint but they don't go out as much as people used to because it's too expensive. At cricket now the team does have a few beers but the bigger sessions tend to be now and again.
Andy Burnham is pledging to be more pub friendly, but all we've had so far is a new tax on overnight stays. And at the budget I'd be amazed if they didn't raise beer tax once again. | | | |

I’m in Ireland at the moment and it’s very clear that duty is charged very heavily on off sales - you won’t find much beer in supermarkets for under €2 a can or bottle, while pub prices are if anything less than home (I admit I’m in the sticks…a pint of Guinness is less than €6 pretty much everywhere. As a result, drinking at home is barely half the price of the pub, rather than 20-25% like at home. Something to think about. Obviously no one likes higher taxes but there’s something to be said for communal rather than solo drinking. | | | |

I'm not sure the youngsters drink as much as their forefathers. And as mentioned if they are drinking then the pubs are a lot more expensive than buying from supermarkets and drinking at home.
