How poor is this women’s football on 00:38 - Jul 3 by Hadders | I was in a large , packed pub tonight and it felt like a bit of a cultural moment. People were totally absorbed in the game and supporting England (or USA, there were quite a few Americans) with the same passion as they would the men's team. There was plenty of skill on display and slightly fewer of the antics which often mar the men's game. In addition, perhaps the women carry less historical baggage and seem less removed from "real life" than the blingy blokes. Well done to the BBC - I suspect many girls may be more likely to take up the game now and the standard will only improve. [Post edited 3 Jul 2019 19:15]

Well put. I've loved every minute of the WWC. Restored my faith in football

How poor is this women’s football on 00:19 - Jul 3 by BrazilNutR | I can never understand for the life of me why the top scoring centre forward isn't always the penalty taker, it's like putting the left winger in goal for penalties to me, should be their bread and butter, and strikers thrive on goals, and penalties are a free chance at a slotting one in from inside the box.. drives me mad. White could have taken it, equalized and won the golden boot |
Absolutely. You're a striker, you live to score goals. Here's a relatively easy chance to score a goal. Why would any striker pass up that opportunity? You assume before the USA game in training they'd worked out who should be on penalties. Unless Houghton just said I'm captain, I'm taking the responsibility.

Yeah totally agree, we had a similar conversation in the pub last night. And when I phoned my mum about quarter of an hour before the game and she sounded unusually eager to get off the phone (usually it's the other way round tbf), it transpired it was in order to watch the match. I had to laugh when she started explaining to me how great football is and about the passing and movement of the England team, all felt very surreal.

As easy on the eye they are it does make me laugh that female athletes, tv presenters etc quite rightly go on about being treated equally, paid equally, not objectified etc then they go and do this. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Both male and female athletes do it though, and it's a shed load of money and free exposure - look at Beckham. Even Joe Hart had his Head & Shoulders deal.

Yes, pretty dire game. The Dutch are really going to struggle if Lieke Martens is injured.

It's nothing to do with being a striker, it's about being able to deal with the pressure. Most people can't deal with that magnitude of pressure very well. It's why potting snooker balls in practice is easy whereas potting in a match with people spectating and something at stake is a much tougher pot. High level sport is all about dealing with pressure.

How poor is this women’s football on 07:34 - Jul 9 with 1098 views | Konk | For all the predictable whinging about why women's football was getting so much airtime and coverage on the BBC website/National papers etc, the viewing figures for England's Quarter-final and Semi-final completely justified the added exposure. Having watched about 30 minutes of women's football in my previous 40+ years, I found myself watching a lot of the games and even following results on my phone when I was out and about. And that's (a) entirely down to the quality of a lot of the football and (b) a result of the increased coverage and visibility. Let's hope we can maintain the momentum and playing the game becomes more economically viable/rewarding for talented young women.
