| Rail seating at LR on 19:10 - Feb 24 by The_Beast1976 | Standing on the Loft back in the day was brilliant. Wish we could have old style terraces back. If you were stood right at the very back of the Loft under the seats overhanging from above you could just about seat the roof of the net and the crossbar at the Loft end. You only knew we'd scored when you saw the net shaking and everyone in front of you going absolutely mental and surging to the front. Great times |
So true. I was at the Loftus Road end when we beat Leeds 2-0 at the end of the 1975-76 season. I was thrilled to have seen Stan Bowles score the second goal in front of us. But, did I see it? Not exactly. I saw him heading towards the goal and it looked likely that he was going to score, but, I did not see what had actually happened until I saw film of it much later.

It wouldn’t be like that any more. But it was normally only that busy for big games.I remember you had to get there early or you’d lose your space.

| Rail seating at LR on 00:58 - Feb 25 by Boston | Actually, in the even older days when there was no seating over your head, we still relied on those at the front tipping us off that the ball had crossed the goal line. |
"I say, young man, would you mind telling us if the ball crossed the goal line?" "Indeed, it has. And we are now in the sixth round of the cup" "Thanks awfully".

The game against Arsenal at the end of that season was interesting in the old Loft.

No it was afternoon, possibly over Easter. Arsenal turned up and tried to take the Loft but got a bit of a surprise. [Post edited 25 Feb 2020 12:54]

It was indeed at Easter. I was on holiday, lugging a (only just) portable radio on a walk over Dartmoor and I remember Gerry Francis scoring a penalty.

Think it was an 1130 ko, I couldn't get in, the only time in my life that I bought a football ticket from a tout. Game had started so it may have been at face. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It was definitely a morning kick off. I was back at Portman Road to meet my wife about 3.05 that afternoon in the Churchmans end. I certainly remember how we all laughed when the ref gave the penalty for us after Stan tripped himself!

Bloody amateur. I started going in 1972 when even standing was a bloody luxury. We used to tie ourselves to the floodlight pylons by our shoelaces and dangle upside down to watch the match. people dangling from floodlights as far as the eye could see. They used to come round and cut us down at the end of matches. Bloody hurt that drop, I can tell you.

| Rail seating at LR on 11:32 - Feb 26 with 1487 views | joe90 | Just received the survey. It would probably be worth introducing into R block and that corner of the Loft. Where I sit in the Loft people sit and stand at different points in the game, rail seating wouldn't improve that, plus it would make it difficult for people to move about. | | | |

Good times. You used tio end up rows away from where you started sometimes to your advantage. Hell I even miss the smelly guy with the carrier bag and beard I once stood next to who used to sing softly to himself.

He's actually in the picture further up the thread. Him and his smelly mates used to turn up with their carrier bags and wait outside from about 10 in the morning

They were Loft Legends. One had a plain bag, one had a Heathrow Airport bag and one had a Stansted one. They were naturally called Bag, Stansted and Heathrow. They stood down there near the front with a few lovely Ladies we used to know and if we had younger siblings we used to stand them with the Ladies so they wouldn't get trampled on - further up, we were mad y'know - and down below there was Twix and tea and sugary drinks to beat the band, by all accounts. I was quietly jealous.

| Rail seating at LR on 03:01 - Feb 28 with 898 views | timcocking | We who were lucky enough to experience the joy and excitement of terraces know the magic we're missing. It's why people loved football. Not because it's good to watch; it isn't, it's dull. It was the atmosphere. 6000 people in the old Goldstone ground in Brighton would generate much more atmosphere than you now get at wembley or Old Trafford. So cr@p in comparison it's genuinely painful. Going to a game only ever serves to remind me of what we're missing out on. Probably hard for people to imagine what a difference it made if they haven't experienced personally it. The terraces...you just can't sing when you're sitting down in fixed seats. Terraces has everybody together in a beautiful solidarity, all feeling as one singing as one everybody with their mates...fcuking magic. Win, lose or draw i loved the experience. Never forget the first time. It's ruined now for me. It's why the away support is so great. | | | |
| Rail seating at LR on 09:59 - Feb 28 with 833 views | francisbowles | I'm old enough to remember when you stood at football and sat at gigs, which was strictly enforced until there was a crowd rush to the front near the end of the gig! Going to standing gigs now reminds me how much better it is for my back and view to sit when I can and being older, I would prefer to pay for what I couldn't afford when I was a teenager. However, I am in favour of rail seating as there is a demand for people to stand and it may help the atmosphere get going a bit quicker. It may also in the future help with that problem of those that want to sit versus those that want to stand when we go away. | | | |
