I thought they were the better team tonight.

But we're up there, competing, and learning.

And not going away.

The thing about us is that we have a lot of attacking quality, and can strike quickly. So even when the opponent is controlling the possession, all it take is one counter and bam we score. This keeps us in matches where we are getting outplayed. Frankly I'm used to being on the other side, the possession team that loses.

All true. Our greatest lack is speed, in fact we're laborious in our build up, especially early on in games, and have trouble with teams that out-hustle us. OTOH we are doggedly persistent and generally get better as matches move along. Today that wasn't the case, and it showed. Has any team dominated us as comprehensively as Boro did in the second half today? If so I can't recall when it was.

I think that a couple of different changes (e.g. Amos instead of Gray) and we could’ve stemmed the pressure from Middlesbrough. It’s a learning curve and it’ll leave Warburton with plenty to ponder.

Good post its hard to see how Amos was left on the bench after being outstanding last time out .Gray looks almost as bad as Charlie fitness wise IMO and he too needs to stay around the box to do damage .

They were excellent. Dodged a bullet there. Yes we were in front twice but they were really good. Happy with a point.

Yeah in hindsight I'd have had Amos on instead of Gray if only to give the midfield more support - but he still has the pace to get forwards too. I can appreciate Warb's positive thinking though.

My other concern (for all the great work we've done this season) is how we seem to always start games slowly. I don't know why it is, but something we can definitely improve on.

Anyway a very enjoyable game last night, Boro were very good and in the end as mentioned it's a decent point. Still plenty of games to go and we are well placed. Exciting times!

The most important thing was not losing. Barely had a kick after 50 minutes, a relief when Boro declared on about 80 minutes. Positives - Marshall superb, Willock also, another flawless performance from Jimmy, Hendrick looking completely at home.

Willock was superb 1st half but as QPRSteve said about he went missing after 60mins and I was looking around the pitch for him. The first half he was everywhere and with his little mate back from the ACON they were linking up well with Wallace down the left during the first half.

Fair result, we are still in 4th in a strong position. Top six finish will be a great achievement and then what will be will be for the playoffs.

Impressed by Boro, thought they were a good a team as any I’ve seen in the Championship. I thought that going head to head to them with wingbacks was an area we lost - Albert was pretty much pinned back the whole game, and they constantly created overloads on the right. I though bringing Moses on was a positive change, and will be interesting to see our options now that McCallum is back.
The great thing about us this season though is that we hang in there in games where we look as though we might fold.

Looking ahead, we have Barnsley (a), Millwall (a), Hull (h) and Blackpool (h). I think it is reasonable to say we should expect to get at least 8 (2w 2d) or 9 (3w 1l) from those, before we go to Blackburn. I hope we build some momentum during this run.

While we're doing that, the direct opposition face each other a few times.

Bournemouth:
Blackpool (a), Forest (h), Swansea (a), Stoke (h)

Blackburn (who have played 2 more):
WBA (a), Millwall (h), Sheffield Utd (a)

Huddersfield (also played 2 more):
Sheffield Utd (h), Fulham (a), Cardiff (h)

Forest (played one more than us):
Stoke (h), Bournemouth (a), PNE (a)

Boro:
Derby (h), Bristol (a), WBA (h)

Luton:
Birmingham (a), WBA (h), Stoke (a)

WBA (played one more):
Blackburn (h), Luton (a), Boro (a)

Sheffield Utd: (played one game FEWER than us):
Huddersfield (a), Hull (h), Swansea (h), Blackburn (h)

Its hard to see any of them matching our 8 or 9 (Boro perhaps), so we're in a good position to consolidate our position and take some pressure off ourselves now. With a fully fit squad as added bonus.

I'm optimistic.

One of those games the team can learn from. It was also the sort of game I'd like to see from another angle - am tempted to watch the whole 90 mins footage. Boro had a real knack for putting some kind of pincer move on us, moving it back into space and then quickly forward into problem areas - pretty effective.

I thought Crooks for them was excellent - he won the majority against Field in the air, snuffed things out but was always available in attack too. Pity he didn't go off earlier.

But that's enough praise for the Teesiders - as someone behind me said afterwards that was the sort of game we'd have lost a season ago.

Like others I'd have like to have seen Amos come on to try to get more of a foothold in the middle - Warbs did say Gray had looked very sharp in training so maybe that influenced that choice. Decent result from a tough fixture.

I liked how we clearly had a plan for dealing with their pressing, but it kind went to pot just before and especially after the subs.

Good result imo. They were very good, and whilst teams can point to the pressing and say "that's how you beat QPR", doubt many will be able to execute it as well and as long as that, and none of them will be drilled by Chris Wilder either

Boro didn't seem to stop running all night - Wilder clearly has them very well drilled and with high fitness levels too.

One thing I noticed from last night and against Swansea is we do struggle to win back possession from teams. Where other teams tend to press us all over the pitch, QPR seem to drop back fairly deep when out of possession and Boro last night were able to have so much time on the ball in the final third picking neat passes and running in behind our defence. Swansea were not so good at the latter but QPR really struggled last night with it and couldn't get out or get the ball to try turn the momentum.

On the odd occasion there was a turn over of possession, we were in on their goal pretty quickly but failed to be clinical. Something to work on

Spot on

Their wing backs pinned ours back and hence we struggled to get out. Hence we kept hitting long balls in the second half

One thing that was really annoying me last night, as it has on numerous other occasions this season, was the persistent standing off in our defensive third. We gave them so much space and so many free crosses. Is tackling such a lost art?

Standing off players has been something that's driven me mad for years. I remember being furious at Onuoha for it when he played at FB but most defenders do it. It must be what they're instructed to do.

Yeah I don't get that either - it's not as if they're going to get in behind us when both teams are 10 yards either side of the edge of our penalty area. Maybe it's something to do with being set and not wanting to get pulled into challenges that open up gaps, or capitalising on breakaway moves, but we do seem to sit quite deep quite a lot.

Thing is Boro moved the ball around with such pace and accuracy, it was almost worth the risk to try some tackles even if just to put them off with some physicality.

it is a close and competitive league this year, right now ten teams fancy the p/offs and maybe 4-5 of them want 2nd.....it is great it is in our hands and we are not relying on others.
i hope IF we need a loan or 2 to get us over the line, the dosh is there, if needed.

Re wing back issues. Think we still need to improve there.

Wallace lately can only last 60 mins such is the momentous effort h puts whilst he's on.

Love AA but think from game to game rotate with Moses and use him from 60 mins, his arrival often creates a bit of impetus once he's on plus some of our guys will need to be rotated.

Didnt remember Matt Crooks behind such a monster.

Sam Field and then when paired up with Cucumber man(Hendricks) did add to our defensive 'wall' however it meant being pushed back we could not pick up loose balls out of the box/surrendered that area to them hence Gray & not Amos on left us out muscled in midfield, well that's the way I interpreted how the game played out.

Its down to us, ignore(hard I know) what the rest are doing. We do our business then que sera

captains fantastic

This is my perception of how the Championship will end up this season, though I'm sure many/all will disagree!

Automatic contention - Fulham, Bournemouth, Queens Park Rangers

Realistic play off contention - Bournemouth/Queens Park Rangers, Blackburn, Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United, Luton. I suspect that Blackburn & Luton will miss out.

Possible play off contention - Huddersfield, West Bromich Albion, Stoke

8 of our remaining games are against the clubs I've included above, 6 of which are away, with difficult matches at Millwall & Preston as well. It ain't going to be easy!

Of course, 27 points from the other 9 games would be of great help!

Although I do agree that Boro played very well and probably deserved to win they did lose their way a bit after we scored the 1st and were a bit fortunate to get level with ball rolling kindly for them, even the second goal was well worked but an own goal. We had a decent chance to win it at the with Wilocks shot.

I thought us fans were a bit crap last night, certainly include myself in that, very quiet all night

Agree about the fans, but 2nd half especially, we didn't really get that near their goal too often.

Oh and I haven't seen this mentioned elsewhere - PLEASE don't let Barbet take any more corners - even worse than his free kicks!

There won't be any more loans as the window has closed.

We have named 24 out of the allowed 25 players, over the age of 21, for the rest of the season. The only new player that would be allowed, I think, would be a non contract player. However, there can't be very many of those that are any good or they would have been picked up already.

I believe this is it, we go with what we've got.

That corner did my fcuking head in. A rare little patch of pressure and we did the defenders' job for them. Argh etc.
