Poll: Who’s better?

Classic Hoos. You want it? You pay for it.

It'll be interesting to see if people do actually cough up.

I imagine the players will sort out this funding between then to save the fans have to cough up :)

I wont be contributing, now if was to be renamed the Gerry Francis Stand which in my view is a much better idea i would gladly donate.

I'm perfectly happy with Ellerslie Road to be honest. I don't mind the change, but I don't feel the need to chip in. Don't want to detract from anyone else who does feel strongly enough about it though.

Club catching a lot of flack on twitter about how it's being funded; comes across as a bit tight, but reasonable enough IMO. It's a solely aesthetic change, not like making a change that will actually benefit SB or changing the name to the KPF.

This idea would work well in a new stadium I think, identifying ways to make the stadium our own and having fans fund it - although maybe something along the lines of the bond scheme may work better in a new stadium.

But I'm not particularly interested in this, particularly the Stan Bowles stuff as I don't think the stand should be named after him or anyone else. This may just show those that were shouting for all of this that they're just a loud minority and that the rest of us can appreciate club legends without the need to name things after them.

I'm gonna avoid twitter for a few days, I imagine its right kicked off over this.

Seems fair though imo

I think the absolutely fair responses on here are why the club has taken this route. They'll get flack for it, but completely understand it. To get a consensus for something like this is so difficult. Tradition and history has seemingly never been more important to football fans, but it has also never been more mawkish - perhaps as a completely fair reaction to the commercialisation of football over the last 30 years.

Bare bones.

I'm sorry but 22k is nothing for the club and it's outrageous they are asking the fans to pay for this

Fine Archer a few weeks wages and that will pay for half of it FFS.

It's about 23K to do the lot judging by my bad maths.

If 5,000 fans worldwide put in a fiver, it's done.

Never knowingly right.

Its not Hoos' money.

Our chairman is the son of one of THE richest men on the planet, if the board wanted the club to fund it, they would have.

Surely fans would be paying it for anyway? The club only makes money from fans (and sponsorship, I guess).

Bare bones.

On the one hand - a group of fans have agitated for this for so long, demanding it would be popular, so surely they'll be inundated with people wanting to support it right?

On the other hand, getting fans to pay is proper Marge Simpson voice hmmmm

In conclusion, I don't know

I never imagined the fans would be paying a penny for it.

Did the Kyan Prince Foundation pay for the rebranding of the stadium?

I know the group behind this have been idiots and very aggressive but this is a massive own goal by the club

Like the poster above I can see both sides.

I think, from interviews, Lee Hoos isn't convinced that the majority of fans actually want this and I guess this will be the acid test.

They DID do a questionnaire on it, so surely could have added "And are you prepared to pay for it" to the questions.

Not a massive own goal for me, but certainly bit of a dodgy back pass to the keeper!

Yeah, this is pretty much exactly where i sit as well.

the Plan for Stan group have by and large been annoying idiots, but for the club to basically string them along saying they'll do it and then present them the cheque without ever suggesting that this is how it will be financed is a bit teeth sucky for me.

I get that Hoo's is sick to his back teeth about the whole thing, but i reckon in terms of cheap points scoring he gets petty revenge on one side and some pretty piss poor PR on the other...

Can we not knock it?

I would rather see the £22k contributing to Stan's ongoing care.

Yes I think this will happen even if fanbase only makes small donation the club will make up the difference and in any event the signage will go up probably when the season ends ready for start next season.

But the KPF rebranding was doing something for charity which had a tangible positive affect, increasing awareness for the Foundation. Changing the name of the stand is purely aesthetic. The club has stepped up their efforts for former players, put on a benefit game for Stan Bowles, and various other things to support him/the family. Changing the name of the stand does not serve any practical purpose, beyond honouring the man. The two are not comparable.

Disappointing is my initial reaction. Did fans pay for the Shankly statue outside Anfield? The United Trinity outside Old Trafford? Henry outside the Emirates?

I know many fans aren't old enough to remember this, but that team of the seventies gave our club its profile that made us not just another Charlton, another Millwall, another (dare I say it) Brentford.

And the player that represented that profile, more than any other, was Stanley. He broke goalscoring records in Europe (imagine ever saying that about any Rangers player ever again!!), and spearheaded our club for almost eight years.

I'm not saying that he carried that team, far from it, but even now, if I talk to other football fans from that era about QPR, the one name they'll always bring up is his. Players like Gerry Francis, Dave Thomas, and the likes of Macca and Les later on, we'll always remember fondly and understand what they contributed to the club, but it's Stan that the football fraternity associate with QPR.

At a time when the club are doing so many things so well on and off the pitch, this doesn't reflect well on them in my opinion.

I always try not to comment on this issue after getting hammered for Tweet early on in the movement, but like Jeff I did suck me teeth a bit when I saw the announcement earlier, and it feels like a pretty classic Hoos move - I've often told the story about the flying seats at Burnley v Blackburn and how he stuck the cost of replacing them on the tickets for that fixture the year after.

Just posting here because on your original point, it isn't unusual for fans to have to fundraise for things like statues and monuments. Ipswich raised £110k recently...
