There were reasons for it though, Foden has been poor for 2 seasons now and hasn't had a good game for England in at least 4 years. Palmer has been injured a lot and didn't have a good season. Likes of Morgan Rogers and Gordon had better season and jumped ahead of them

Trent another didn't have a good season and injured a lot. They were not all playing great and left out. He brought Spence instead of Trent who was one of our best players this tournament.

I don't think they are the reason we went out. We had more than enough in that squad to not self harm int he last 30 minutes last night. We might have lost anyway if we had kept trying to attack as Argentina are a very good side but we beat ourselves. That defeat is all about mindset that starts with the manager, he/they bottled it in the big moment

Henderson seems the weirdest one to me. I would have liked another decent defensive midfielder and everyone says Wharton would’ve been a good option. Especially as Anderson was on a yellow card for the entire second half and marking Messi and Rice has had a gruelling season and I think faded a bit in matches . Chalobah was also an odd one.

But totally agree with you about Foden, Palmer and Trent. And that Spence was our best player for much of yesterday’s game.

But certainly for the last thirty minutes the midfield weren’t firing and coming out to block or carry the ball out. So to be reliant basically on a very weary Rice and Anderson on a yellow seems crazy.

But surely Tuchel was told very clearly what the problem was with Southgate and that’s why he got the job: maybe in theory more sophisticated tactically and more brave at the end of tournaments. But he didn’t seem to have absorbed this message which seemed completely obvious to the rest of us. If anything he focused on the things Southgate was good at likely team bonding but ignored the bit he struggled with which was steel at the end of tournaments.

Tuchel basically said that they wouldn't follow his instructions so ge threw players on to help them defend which is ridiculous IMO. However there is a common denominator in these 3 defeats and thats Kane continually dropping back and not giving us an outlet. He thinks he's helping the team but in reality he's hindering our shape.
I would have definitely hauled him for Watkins last night. Extra pace and someone who will give an outlet.

Thank God for this post ozexile I thought I was losing my mind. Having Ollie Watkins dressed for every game and not giving him any minutes is criminal IMO. His pace and energy alone plus he would have been wired to the moon to play against Argentina that last 20 minutes would have made a massive difference. Of course Harry should have been off and not available if it got to PKs but he would not have survived extra time anyway.
Mexico kept crossing the ball ,England feasted on that and held out. Argentina shot from distance, sent in crosses but more importantly had Messi to crack open the lock and he did.
Playing a consolation game Saturday in that heat is stupid and even if they empty the benches nobody will be motivated time to scrap it

As usual most of us watching the game knew what needed to happen after we scored and were dropping further and further back. As usual most of us watching the game knew that defending a one nil lead, letting Argentina play, was the wrong decision.

Tuchel was appointed to take us over the line but last night he was Gareth Mark II.

The squad was fine other than a few not fully fit, would have liked to have seen Kyle Walker there, the only England player included in the Euros team of the tournament two years ago.

TK1 raised a really good point about the two Head Coaches in the final on Sunday. I am hearing that the bookies favourite to replace Tuchel should he go is Pep. How arrogant to think that Pep would give the England job a second look.

The FA need to be looking at developing the next England head coach, there is no doubt that there is a difference between managing at International and club level.

We were debating the squad early in this thread and I wasn't sure of some of his selections then

One of my beefs: no point ever taking injured/injury prone blokes, they invariably struggle. Livramento why was he selected? And stop picking Reece James, he cannot string games together, he ain't suddenly going to do it in a 64-team WC.

Stones was another I wouldn't have taken, but he just about held out physically.

Saka hasn't been fit since March, and I wouldn't have brought him either. But despite an injury hit season, I still think Palmer was near to full fitness.

Rice has been playing on air for months now. England need to find a way to not rely on him all the time. Kane will be 33 soon, I dont think he'll be playing in 2030, so there is a need to find his replacement sooner rather than later.

We can debate the squad, but its irrelevant now. Just hope TT, or whomever is in charge, dont make an already difficult job more so by bringing unfit players to tournaments in the future.

"There’s nothing on the bench to wrestle back possession in midfield..."

This is true. But who picked Mainoo and Henderson as the only back-up midfielders, neither of whom are remotely capable of the task? Who left the one English midfielder who keeps the ball like a metronome, Adam Wharton, who always passes forwards and quickly, who would've given the opposition a question to answer when Rice went off? As would have the legs of Scott.

Thomas Tuchel is a mercenary on £5m a year whose big idea is for England to play like a plucky, physical newly-promoted Championship team to the PL. Fast, strong, straight lines, nick a goal, shut up shop, throw on two centrebacks to hang off the crossbar (and miss the man in the middle). Ended the game with Dan Burn up top and Konsa failing to beat the first man on the wing. Laughable L2 sht.

If the three subs coming on when England go 1-0 are Cole Palmer to keep the ball and stress the two Argentine CBs who are on yellows ffs, Alexander Arnold and Wharton to hit him and keep the ball, England win that. England probably win it if Watkins and Saka came on to run at them.

But TT doesn't trust or like the technical English players. He likes specimens. The one technical player he grudgingly employs is Bellingham - and it's very grudging - he does so because of his physicality. He looks at the English players like mid-level PL players but this is a great generation of English players and I cannot believe how they set up, all the technical ability of European, PL winners he left at home for the like of Burn, Chalobah, Henderson.

In 2017, England won the U17 World Cup and the U20 World Cup. They won the U21 Euros twice on the bounce in 23 and 25. The FA spent over a decade building institutional competition winning know-how and culture, chiefly through Lee Carsley, but also Paul Simpson and Steve Cooper, with crown jewel youth players Foden and Palmer at the forefront of winning those titles.

And then the new FA chief exec, Mark Bullingham, a former marketing and commercial guy with zero football know-how, said - 'yeah, that was good, winning all those titles, but what we need is a proven elite club manager from Europe to win a world cup' (like they hadn't already tried that with Capello and Ericksen), and chucked all that carefully grown culture, along with many of the country's best young players, in the bin for an abrasive German sex-dungeon guy who's fallen out with every club he's worked at. And will now fall out with England.

Tuchel will hang in there, £5m is £5m. But Bullingham has to go. I genuinely believe England would have got as far with Lee Carsley, but the football would have been better.

I've just spent 20 mins going through pages 45 onwards.

This post jumps out and says everything I feel brilliantly.

I never agreed with Tuchel's appointment and it flies in the face of what I thought the FA were putting in place.
Not warmed to him at all since in the chair.

Then he picked his squad... my days some proper ricks in it. He then doubled down with the call up's for injuries. To give him some slack I didn't think we'd get past R32.

Have we played well for 90 mins at all?
Not for me.
45 mins against Croatia maybe - then proper spirit with 10 men v Mexico with all the other noise around it but everything else has been very stodgy.

Last night cut deep........ you simply cannot get that close to a Final at this level and capitulate as we did. Everything points to the squad not being right, the players not having him (those barbed comments post Mexico hardly inspiring) and pure arrogance.

The FA are a bunch of jokers.
It would not surprise me to see them line up Biesla as a repalcement (!!!) and they have painted themselves into a corner in terms of the job coming with a massive package and failure being accepted.

If we are to go "top name" again then it does have to be Pep but can't see that moving the needle much TBH.

Not sure I can ramp myself back up for England now....... I've seen this film too often.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Just out of curiosity, and for good conversation, what if we'd done like-for-like substitutions and at 1-0 up carried on playing the same way and the game really opened up with both teams going for it and Argentina scored two goals in the last 40mins (plus added time) and we still lost.

Would everyone be happy because we approached it 'the right way', even though we lost or would we just be less narked off than we, rightly, currently are.

I am with Simon Jordan. No shame in losing to Argentina but a shame losing like we did.

We always contribute to our own downfall so to be eliminated whilst on the front foot would make a refreshing change and was the reason why Tuchel was appointed.

I think Henderson was there to help with Bellingham, they get on really well and team spirit was such a big thing for Tuchel he wanted him around. Wharton is a better player but I'm not sure he'd have played ahead of Rice or Anderson to be honest. Chalobah I didn't really get but your 4th/5th choice centre half is never that likely to play.

Tuchel himself gave an interview with Gabriel Clarke when he took over and laid out where it had all gone wrong before and then when it came to the crunch he bottled it. Southgate arguably had more steel in the end of tournaments winning 2 of his 3 semi finals

Tuchel made a massive error with his subs and i am sure he knows it today. You cannot have noone there for an outball. He basically removed his midfield and handed the game to Argentina. I am not saying we were bossing the game but it was even, their 2 central defenders were on yellow cards and we were toe to toe. Then he removes all that impetus and expects us to hold out for1/2 an hour against some of the best attackers in the world. I have not seen one commentator today who says that was other than madness. I genuinely think we would of had more chance of winning the game if he didn't change anything. As a supposed top class coach he absolutley messed up.

He brought Livramento instead of TTA, not Spence. Then he brought Chalobah instead of TTA, even more ridiculously. TTA's availability was better last season than Livramento, on a par with James. And he's a better full back than Quansah, Livramento or Chalobah.

I disagree about the squad. I think history will judge it as contrary at best, career vandalism at worst.

Palmer is just levels above Toney or, it pains me to say, Eze, and yes, a slight drop off of form in a crazy season at a car crash CFC doesn't change my opinion. He still scored 11 goals in 30-odd games so hardly a washout. Bringing him on to take care of the ball, carry it towards their defence, winning fouls when Gordon went off would have been better than bringing on a CB, I reckon.

All spilt milk, I know. And we can disagree, that's fine. But to my eyes, every game in the competition revealed the misshape and folly of the squad.

He had good attacking options on his bench like Saka, Eze, Mainoo, Rashford and Watkins. Replace those players with palmer and co if you like but if you don't use them you might as well have us two sat on the bench.

Who he did or didn't take is not why we lost last night, those changes he made at 1-0 up and the lack of changes at 1-1 are the reasons.

Yes. But I wouldn’t bring someone to a World Cup just because he’s another guys’s best mate. He could have come as an extra ‘coach’ or something but not in the squad. That’s just bonkers, I don’t think Wharton would’ve started ahead of those two but he could’ve replaced one of them or played in one of the earlier matches to give Rice a break.

Unsurprisingly I don’t think Southgate had steel but we’ll disagree on that all day long. That’s why I’m particularly disappointed that Tuchel was so limp at the important time.

Talking abou getting rid of Tuchel is a strange one in many ways.

Qualified easily
Got to WC Semis which we rarely do
Played well for most of the Semi-Final and were 1-0 up with less than 10 minutes left.

We all want to win, but most of use would have taken that as a decent WC before it started.

As others have said above though, he was brought in to manage these moments and failed miserably. This was all on him, sometimes you can blame players but this was 100% him. Squad selection and tactics / subs. This was a missed opportunity and that is why everyone is so frustrated this morning.

I suspect he will stay as on paper he has (probably) achieved the minimum target set for him.I'd be more than happy if he leff. He failed on the major aspect he was brought in for, we will have a great chance at the Euros, I'd rather have someone else at the helm.

I'm not so sure Tuchel will survive.

He might have done enough to keep the suits at the FA happy.

But if it's true that the players weren't doing what Tuchel told them to do then that suggests the players aren't having him.

The players are very media savvy these days. If anti-Tuchel stories start appearing in the media the FA might decide it's best to shake hands and give someone else a go.

Good shout on Kane and Watkins. That would have been a good substitution and one that could have produced a second goal for England.

It would have been great to see England in the final, but it wasn't to be.

Also a good shout from DWQPR about the FA needing to get its act together and start producing some young coaches to work in the Premier League and then the England team. There are too few good young coaches coming through.

You're right.

The FA might have painted themselves into a corner (again!)

Apparently there were performance clauses in Tuchel's contract but getting to the last four in the WC must be more than enough to keep him in his job.

https://www.espn.co.uk/footbal

They made the same mistake with Capello by giving a contract extension before a tournament started.

It's chicken and egg. From the moment he picked the squad, I said - perhaps on here? Can't be bothered to check, but was definitely something all my mates were saying - as soon as we play a really good team where possession is at a premium, where balls out from the back need to be dynamic, then England would be cooked as he'd left those tools at home. That's what happened last night. We hadn't played a really good team before last night.

He picked a squad of samey players. We needed a different kind of midfielder (Wharton), not just a load of destroyers, we needed a defender who could release pressure and set forwards free rather than just booting it or passing sideways (TAA), we needed another ball carrier, not a winger (Palmer, though Eze can do it, but not as well).

I agree obviously that he would need to lob them on, but the fact he didn't pick them in the first place is also the problem I had with him originally. We'll see how this all settles now for him. He had to succeed doing it his way and last night that blew up.

It's going to be much harder selling Chalobah and Henderson over, say, TAA and Wharton with any authority going forwards, much less Madueke over Palmer or a patently injured Saka over Gibbs-White.
