Tuchel does have the likes of Wharton and Gibbs White at his disposal who are good, technical players who like possession in tight areas and tough conditions, he chose to ignore them.
He ignored them in favour of prioritising physicality and quick wingers, so much so that even Madueke fluked a call up. Then he took them all off! Left Kane up top by himself.

Ever since I've been watching England we've got beaten by the first top quality midfield that can control the game. We start the game well and usually go ahead with some nice football, but it is based on being high energy and it always falls off towards the end of the game as they get tired and the other team just gradually smothers us and we can't get the ball back for any meaningful possession.
There must be loads of examples of this by now:
Argentina 2026 - we were 1 nil up
Croatia semi final - we were 1 nil up
Brazil 2002 - we were 1 nil up (Brazil were even down to 10 men and it didn't matter)
Italy Euro Final - we were 1 nil up
Spain Euro Final
2-2 at home to Netherlands after being 2-0 in 1993 qualifiers
England Portugal 2-2 Euro 2024 - we were 1 nil up
Italy Euro 2012 - they passed us off the pitch in that one, very lucky to get to penalties
Portugal Euro 2000 - we were 2-0 up and lost 3-2
Probably more examples I've forgotten about.
We just don't have the technical players to go from defence to midfield in good areas for a full 90 minutes against an opposition with a quality midfield and we never have.
Having said that I didn't like the selection of the squad for this World Cup or the subs against Argentina as I think that made things even worse than they normally are. It's as if Tuchel hadn't even considered this issue before that game. |
As we're talking about international football, is it just something in the DNA of players.? Brazil, Germany, Spain, France, Argentina, Italy. What is it about those nations that win these tournaments? Each having their own style or identity. I know its a cliche but the Germans efficient, South American teams , skill and flair etc.
I remember Spain were always the nearly team, much like England for years until 2008 and basically that Barcelona team.
Is it just something about English mentality, is it the manager, is it the coaching from grass roots to international level? I dunno. Kane mentioned about the missing jigsaw piece. Would Pep Guardiola take an England team to the next level. ?
Southgate had more success with England then previous managers as he knew one of the biggest problems with the squad was team spirit. It was fractured by the players domestic clubs. There was no harmony and it was made up of individuals. Does the Premier league take too much out of the players.. ? Obviously Bellingham and Kane dont play in that league, who are our two best players.
Tuchel was supposed to build on Southgates foundations, and to an extent he carried that philosophy into his squad, keeping a tight knit group, rather than bringing a Grealish or Foden etc. We still fell short though.
Will be interesting to see the England v France game. Theres nothing to win obviously but to see how the players respond. |  |

This nothing to play for mentality ? Is this just an English premier league or championship thing , where a cup game off football are tossed aside in favour of just staying in the league or just throwing the youth players on, as they cant play in the serious business end of premier football. ?

Very important for Tuchel to be competitive tonight. Gets hammered by France, then his next games become squeaky bum for him and The FA if mood music carries on:

I know, just that no one really remembers who finished 3rd (or 4th) and it’s not like a domestic cup competition, you don’t progress to anything should you win so maybe an opportunity to give the fringe players a try out but also in respect to what TK1 has said, it’s certainly an opportunity for Tuchel to redeem himself especially with tough games coming up in the autumn. It will be interesting to see how the players respond.
If I’ve got this right, he’s been saying the players didn’t do what he asked (hasn’t he said that before?).
If they didn’t then they have a chance to make it right, if they did do what they were told and he’s saying otherwise then I’d be pretty peeved off as a player if my boss said that.

We lost that game when he replaced Gordon with Konsa. I don't know about anyone else but I was incredulous at that change at that point. It said to Argentina, we're declaring, so you can just attack now. That mistake was later compounded, but it was the start. [Post edited 18 Jul 15:14]

Not an excuse, just an observation, but we played 7 games in 28 days, that’s the equivalent of our Saturday-Wednesday-saturday routine over 4 consecutive weeks.
We’ve seen what we’re like over a single week!
Starting to wonder if we suddenly hit a wall that just coincided with us going a goal up.
Think we played the spine of our side, the engine room, in virtually every single game. It’s quite conceivable that they all crumbled at the same time. Maybe rather than aiming at top spot, in future we manage selections in the group stage from a whole squad view. Dangerous if only two from four qualify but with largely three from four, that may be the way to go.
Tournament now far too many games in my view. France far and away the best side, again, their performance v Spain was inconceivable. A lot of energy expunged against teams who shouldn’t really be there. The first sixteen out were pretty awful, the eight surviving third placers, all out in the first knock out stage. From a footballing point of view only, it degrades the tournament. [Post edited 18 Jul 7:31]

I don't disagree with your overall point but your opening statement is inaccurate.
If you played 7 games, Sat, Weds, Sat, Weds, Sat, Weds, Sat. That would be 21/22 days not 28/29.
It's still a lot of games in a month and the biggest gap was between the first and second games. It's better if you manage to be one of the first teams to play. | | | |
