The Harvey Vale Conundrum 20:13 - Oct 18 with 13539 viewsBrianMcCarthy

What're everyone's thoughts on him so far?

When he's on it, I think he's a fantastic talent - speed of thought, lovely technique, vision, decent set-piece delivery, and real pace in his passing. But when he's off, it seems to slide fairly comprehensively.

Very early days following a long layoff so maybe the inconsistency we're seeing is to be expected?

Also, is playing on the right, but inverted his natural position, I wonder.
I can see him as a creative midfielder, wide player (not a winger, maybe), an attacking midfielder, but is his current position where we see him in the long-term?

Will I ever run out of question marks?

I really like Vale.

But he was very poor today. His final ball was dreadful. Just one of those days I think. Every cross and ball into the box was woeful. Nothing worked.

I don’t think he’s a winger, and, if he is, it’s not as a right winger.

I think he’ll end up playing central midfield as the ball player. He reads the game well and has a bit of class. Today was not his day. Early days though.

I’d really prefer us to play with at least one “winger” on their natural flank (e.g. right footer on the right), so we have more width to stretch the opposition across the pitch more, and have someone who can beat their man on the outside and deliver and away swinger or get to the byline and pull it back/fizz it across with their strongest foot.

I thought the same about his crossing yesterday, but on reflection, slinging crosses into that Millwall defence was never likely to achieve anything. They win literally everything in the air.

They are strong at the back and have some pace upfront. They will be a tough nut to crack this season. We only really got at them when the subs came on, despite dominating possession in the first half.

We are still a work in progress, but when we eventually settle down and thinks start to click, I am excited at what we can achieve in this league. Still hugely optimistic.

Vale is a good prospect. No doubt he will be a great signing, but will not likely see the very best of him until next season.

Like him as a player, battles, can. play multiple positions. Plays wide right in a similar way to when Rowlands played there not as a winger but more of a wide midfielder. benefits from having Burrell who will move out to the right and they create an overload. Can really whip a ball, crossing and dead balls were poor yesterday

Early days yet - thought his final ball yesterday let him down. No shortage of options at moment Chair, Dembele - did well when he came on yesterday, Saito and Poku.
On paper a bag of riches , can’t remember the last time we looked so strong, personally think yesterday Fields strength in midfield would have helped him and team generally. Varane was off pace and as much as Madsen has improved still needed someone to relish a tackle and Field does. You don’t become a bad player overnight and you need to win the right to play and in the second half we didn’t until too near the end.

When he's good, he's very good but when he's bad he's non-existent. Overall, I've been happy with his contribution this season. Assists versus Charlton and Bristol City, lovely flick around the corner in the lead up to the first goal at Wrexham, and scored the winning goal in a tight game against Stoke. With Poku and Chair close to a return and competing for the wide spots with Saito and Smyth, I wouldn't be averse to experimenting with Vale in a more central position.

I am glad he is getting his chance, been doing well on occasions but will be 'benched' when our players return.....not ready yet to play every match.

Sorry, I don't either Mart.
The title just amused me - sounded like a book, or a film.

You can see, I hope, from my OP that I like him.

There was a brief cameo today, Nix, that seemed to sum up his rustiness.

It was early in the second half down the right wing/inside right channel and the ball came to him and he laid it off first-touch, nice weight, so quick, and it was the kind of pass that made you think of really insanely talented players of the last ten years - Eze, Willock, Chair, Ball - then it came back to him and he played another forward pass, overhit, and it ran out for a goal kick.

Just rusty, hopefully.

Insanely talented. Ball. Interesting.

For me he just looks like a really good young player playing at a level above where he's played previously. If you forget about the Chelsea hype that surrounds him and remember the fact that he's played less than 10 matches at this level. Excited to see what he's like after playing 100.

He has done so much better, since he has grown a barnet.

He looks 20 years old again

We took a chance in that we had half a season where we knew he would not feature, and i think he will just keep improving.

I think vale needs pace and movement around him. So he needs kolli, burrell and saito rather than Frey, varane

Just my thought

One slipped pass in the first half inside the Millwall left back and the slow realisation that it was Michy Frey lumbering after it…

I really like him and think he has the talent to slot into multiple roles. A positive for us.

Saturday he was rubbish. He's young, off a long lay off. It happens

If Madsen was injured or even struggling from a 3 game week, I would play Vale there. Second best passer in the team

This. He's on very few pro appearances relative to his age and hasn't played consistently since his Bristol Rovers days. The talent is there though and he's got a very high ceiling, especially as a creator which is a hard attribute to consistently show.

Not the right game for him Saturday and we'll see these patchy performances from lots of our players - esp those bought as dev prospects. I'm generally fine with it.

Nice player, needs games, but can see him becoming very good if he can stay fit.

Personally, given he has a good range of passing, happy to tackle and can run at players with with the ball, I'd play him central in place of Madsen, initially alongside Hayden due to his experience, then more so Varane as/if he develops as he should. Madsen has improved but not enough to be a regular starter in there, still needs to do a lot more to cement that spot in my opinion.

I don't think he can play wide on the right long-term but wouldn't be against seeing him as a left wing-back (not convinced he could be a fullback) or on the left side of a 3 in centre midfield.

I like what I see, and like others am curious if he'd be more impactful as an attacking central midfielder than on the wing (especially given we will have Poku, Dembele and Smyth as options).
