Norwich away on Saturday after they play at home on a Tuesday hardly seems fair, so asked co-pilot how many times each championship team has a Wed away followed by a Sat away:

QPR: 2
Ipswich: 2
Blackburn: 2
Charlton: 2
Cov: 1
Bristol City: 1
Derby: 1
Hull: 1
Southampton: 1
15 other teams: 0

I haven't checked this manually and we know AI can often be wrong but...This seems a bit much - surely they can produce something more balanced than this given the known drop off for 3 game weeks ending away.

It's the way things are nowadays with too many breaks for the international teams after years of complaints not enough was being done to help the national team qualifying for tournaments.

We have always had three games in quick succession after Christmas Day which has never been a great success for us. No away wins on Boxing Day since 1971 says a lot about the club that has to play three times in 7/8 days. We have Portsmouth away on Boxing Day and West Brom away three days later but we start the New Year with two home games on 1 and 4 January. We just have to get on with it and have the right attitude for these three game stints which has been lacking from us. The EFL and Sky will never worry about fairness or the effect it has on fans travelling.

I'm not disputing the impact on the supporters at all Drum. If it were down to me I'd cut the number of teams in the Championship to 20. Fewer games, particularly in midweek, would hopefully improve the quality and reduce the frequency of the issues that you're referring to.

It's the constant complaining about these three week games, as Brian mentioned earlier in the thread, that I'm referring to. Everyone has them. It looks like an excuse culture to me, but others seem to see it differently and that's fair enough.

Double away game weeks isn't the point though. It’s when it’s a Wednesday followed by a Saturday, which is 1) significantly worse than Tuesday-Saturday and 2) is entirely avoidable. There’s nothing stopping teams away twice in a row doing Tues-Sat or Sat-Wed if it’s away first.

Goodness it's one thing blaming a three game week AFTER we lose a couple of them but BEFORE the 2nd match and straight AFTER our most exciting win of the season???

Burrell was flying all over the world, as many of them were, but they still managed to put three past Dull and had 26 shots on goal.

Get on with it, I say.

Haha!

It's a mindset at the end of the day - if the players and coaching staff have a 'woe is me' attitude about three game weeks like the fans then we're fked from the get go.

First off it isnt 3 games in a week as hull was last week & when we play Brum on dec 9th both teams will play sat & tuesday so the same time between games . How is it right the home side this saturday do zero trips & have 1 extra day to prepare whilst R's will travel to Rovers get home 3am thursday if no road closures then onwards to their actual homes & be back in the coach to Norwich again friday ?
Even if we go along the lines of its ok for the club to be cheated in this way maybe spare a thought for the fans , i get home 4:30pm thurs from rovers & out the door 07:40 for Norwich saturday on a bus replacement.
After a similar trip to Swansea i was shattered come the saturday away to Derby & though i am a keen supporter it takes the edge off the 2nd away trip & reduces anticipation which was born out on the pitch , however the travel & match tickets remain expensive despite seeing a sub standard 3rd game .
I appreciate some of you may be talking from the point of view of watching on tv but there is a massive difference between pressing the off switch on the remote & battling back from some god forsaken place late midweek & then playing so soon after whilst the other team goes nowhere & are in their beds tuesday night .

From three pm on Saturday to 3pm the following Saturday is exactly 7x24 hours = 1 week.

Btw Blackburn played on Friday, so, after their short trip to Preston, they also have an extra night's rest before their home fixture with us.

We have to get on with it but it's an unfair system that needs sorting and expect rotation.

The next fixture problem will be the Afcon when we could be threadbare for strikers over the busy Christmas and New Year period.

I'm another that would welcome a 20 team league throughout the EFL (and National League).

I did find it funny on Friday night how the commentators kept stating how difficult it is for Blackburn to be playing 7 matches before Christmas. Not once did they mention that Preston & every club in the Championship faced the same!

I think Blackburn and Ipswich have an extra game as they have to replay their match that was abandoned due to the weather.

Another factor that needs to be taken into account is the amount of miles between each away game in a three game week. It does seem to me that we consistently get the short straw, Swansea away then Derby, now Blackburn away and then Norwich. Although the EFL did miss a trick last season when they could have scheduled Plymouth away on a Wednesday night followed by a midday kick off at Sunderland!

You're right Pedro. I live in Ipswich but I forgot about the abandoned game! I also had no idea what date it was being played.

"This fixation with playing three games in a week seems to me to almost setting up an excuse culture at the club."

Ya, I've said the same, Mr_Beef.
Even calling it that is nonsensical and feeds into the fear.
Our managers reference it, our players do, our commentators do, our media team do.
And all in tones used by bad actors in bad horror movies whispering about impending armageddon.

We play at the weekend, we play midweek.
Step up, or step off.

Absolutely right Brian.
The same time we had 3 games in a week so did Coventry.
We lost 2 they won all 3.
It about attitude among the players and managelment

With today's pitches and equipment, modern sports science and nutritional expertise the busy fixture schedule should not be an issue at all. I can't keep up with how many subs can come on either - we have a reasonably decent matchday 16 so there's nothing to moan or worry about.
No wonder club keeps faltering every time it builds a bit of momentum - too many whiny folks thinking like losers. This week is an opportunity to help ourselves to 9pts so go out there and get them!

Coventry have won every game in three games in 8 days schedules and have notched up another two this week. Two down on Saturday they still win and tonight away from home they score two late goals to win. No signs of being tired with travelling and short game turnarounds so they clearly have the right mental attitude to handle it. The manager has to take credit for that.

Winning games helps a team’s confidence to win more games. As we know, losing also brings more losses.
Also their location might be a factor as they don’t have as far to travel in any direction as another team closer to one of the far flung corners of the country.

We seem to have been screwed more than most/usual on this this season.
Not helped by us suddenly playing Wednesdays instead of Tuesday.

It does even out over the season, I think, but what worries me more is how the manager milks every extra hour, with his pathetic 'not an excuse, but we had to drive two more junctions up the M1 than them etc. etc. etc. ' He does it again and again, and no one seems to have the wit or pride to pick him up on it.

And then people wonder why we get abject showings like today! If you didn't laugh, you'd cry!

Might be because they are literally more physically tired. It’s not imaginary. Run around for 90 mins in blackburn, then get home at 2am and run around again in Norwich two days later - impossible not to be impacted.

We need to deal with it and should have had more rotation today.

I was also surprised there wasn't more changes for today, espcially given how baked they were by the end of Wednesday's game. Fitness continues to be a huge issue, and today we maybe compounded that by not making a few changes.

But, yet again, we tired very early. That suggests a mentality problem as well, imho.

Sorry, I'm not buying this line of being more physically fatigued.

Oxford United played at Norwich on Tuesday and still managed to put in a serious shift against Ipswich, yesterday. All within the same timeframe of minimal recuperation that we seem to claim as being contributory to today's abject performance.

Oxford played their three games in exactly one week. A team whose squad depth I would contend is less deep than ours. Two of those three games were against Ipswich and Middlesbrough.

Oxford played at home though, and did not have minus a days rest vs their opponent. The point is not the number of games - it’s a double away with serious travelling. Comparing with Oxford is totally different.

A double away is known to be statistically significant to results in the championship and teams are packed full of sports scientists when they complain about the impact of travelling. It’s fact not opinion.

It was a combination of late travel back from Blackburn - some players posted they were at the training ground at 3am on Thursday morning, so assume no or little training Thursday, then short session Friday morning before travelling on Friday afternoon.

Norwich were at home Tuesday so an extra days to recover/train without travel.
