Electric cars to be taxed per mile. on 17:01 - Nov 26 by nick_hammersmith
The answers as always is "It depends" How much do you pay for your electric, where will you charge, when will you charge, how many miles will do?
We are very lucky, we have solar at home, so on the odd day when its sunny we can charge the car for gratis, but I reckon even if you pay to charge at home its still cheaper than petrol.
Caveat, charging at those forecourts can be very expensive, so if this would be your main way of doing I'd be cautious
"Caveat, charging at those forecourts can be very expensive, so if this would be your main way of doing I'd be cautious".
Very good point. I've had EVs for 10 years now, but, being temporarily in a rented house with no drive and therefore no charging point, I'm stuck with using commercial chargers at the moment. Some of the prices are insane, I've seen places pricing their electricity at 89p per kWh!
One supplier worth trying is Arnold Clark. They've recently launched their network and while it's a bit thin in some parts of the country, it is currently amongst the cheapest network of fast chargers I have found, at 55p per kWh.
I really struck it lucky the other day because I went to one of their charging stations located at a Mercedes dealership. While I was charging, I got to sit in a plush showroom and one of the staff brought me complimentary coffee and biscuits .
"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

If u pay a small monthly subscription IONITY is very cheap 43p per kw thats on par with Tesla t around 39 p Charing at home is still king obv 7p and the house gets cheap price at the same time Even with the increase will it make a huge difference to me on long trips no , the overall cost of running and Ev is way way cheaper than anyone car , brakes servicing exhausts pile change etc , last Tesla cost us 10 quid over the 36 moths that was windscreen washer fluid nothing else in costs apart from Charging

“ If I did 12,000 miles over the tax year do I have to write a cheque out to the DVLA for £360?”
This is what I don’t understand. Who will check you have actually done 12,000 miles. A regiment of tax inspectors checking every car at the start of the tax year!!!!!!
An EV is basically a moving smart meter, that’s why this is being rolled out for EV and not for conventional vehicles.
If it were being calculated via MOT we’d all be getting charged but we’re not.
Expect heavy fuel duty rises soon to force you out of your private vehicle into an altogether more public vehicle where they know where you are and in time, what you’re up to.
Fascinating to listen to Reeves waffling around this.

EV newer models are already appropriated for this and you may notice this is being rolled out in three years time, time enough to ensure all new EV cars are ‘ready to go’ as it were.
The truth will be exposed eventually.
Not a political dig by the way, they’re all in on it.

They deserve a political dig. Don't mistake me for a supporter of this shower please!

electric cars was a gimmick, will it really save the planet? maybe slow it down a bit but until huge industry changes, our small changes are just mind games. how much of what we recycle actually is re-used? or just in landfill?

The planet will save herself.
She always has.
She always will.

I mean, it hasn't on at least five occasions.
99% of all species that have ever lived are now extinct.
My point entirely.
Will "we" be here in 100 years, a thousand years, ten thousand? Maybe, maybe not.
Climate change is a fact - it's been happening for millions and millions of years.
There may come a time when the only things sliding across a scorched desert or a frozen tundra (pick your own theory as suits) are Chelscum fans that have morphed into cockroaches but Mother Earth will still be here.

I don't get why people are surprised by this. No government could lose the sort of money they get from fuel duty and not replace it. EVs are significantly heavier compared to a similar sized combustion engine car so will increase wear on roads so that will also increase costs. It won't be long before there is little difference between an EV and petrol/diesel car in terms of taxation.

Ah I see.
What you are saying is trying to change our lives for the better now is a waste of time because humans could be extinct in 10,000 years.

It makes you uncomfortable that mine go back to the begining of time but never mind.
I totally get arguements about direct injestion of CO2. Cat convertors are wonderful things. As for the rest of it..... my opinion is that Red Ed and his mukele will be the ruination of us long before we frazzle.

Hey hoh
I know this is pissing into the wind, but the data via ice cores provide climate records dating back 1.2 million years.

Reading all this - and at the risk of sounding smug, self-satisfied and excessively pleased with myself - I’m glad my driving days are over (cue the Shoe Leather Tax).

MOT records the mileage, then will then adjust your tax code or if self employed or contracting you will have to declare it.
Going to kill new car purchases as you don't MOT for 3 years so nice big tax bill waiting, or people will shift new cars after 18 months just to confuse the the treasury.
Its a genius plan, nothing can go wrong.
It can't be retroactive for the mileage after the first MOT, can it?
Why would you buy a four year old car with high miles, knowing that you might have to pay thousands to cover someone elses miles?! Mental!
It'll be reliant on self certifying for those first three years, with some weak threat that HMRC could audit you for something less than £500 of tax revenue? -- Its probably the same way they want to enforce "professional" eBayers or Vinted sellers. "Please declare it, so we can double tax you on it"

All I know is that the trade in clocking cars is about to go through the roof.
There are stories that ex-police cars are resold by big compaines and the police know they clock them but do nothing.
Its already a thing, it's why compaines like CarVertical sponsor half of youtube.

Surely it must be getting harder to clock a car these days? My car has its own SIM card so it can connect to the internet for navigation etc. Its not beyond the wit of man for it to send its mileage and location back to HQ for some nefarious purposes.
Who is buying ex-Police cars? They must be the most abused vehicles going, driven pretty much 24/7

Here a video with some of the details
In days gone by you had to remove the clocks and manually wind back a clock. Now you plug the ODB Port and away you go.
Sad but true.
