Lets just clear up this theory that speed limits are set to make money... they arent.
Local authorities set the speed limits. Speed enforcement (and that includes cameras) is done by the Police. Councils are not that benevolent.
Local authorities lower speed limits becuase speed is the most significant factor in the severity of the injury. A 1mph reduction in speed means a 6% less likley for accidents to happen.
If someone is hit by a car doing 30 mph they have a 40% chance of being killed; if someone is hit at 20mph they have a 90% chance of surviving. |

When you have 4 different speed limits on a 400 yard stretch of road, there is no other conclusion that can be reached. Just because the Council aren't directly making the money doesn't mean it isn't a money making operation.
And pulling the "it's my job" card doesn't make you right or command respect. On the contrary. I've often wondered which geniuses brought us crackpot ideas like 20mph, LTNs, time-restricted zones, oversized cycle lanes, bicycles allowed to go 2 ways on a one-way street, the various LEZs, and now radar speed cameras. Now I know.

Many, many years ago when I lived in Camden, as I was a leaseholder I was bound to pay for annual service charges, section 20 charges etc. in the flats where I lived (36 in total, 50/50 split between leaseholders & council tenants).
The caretaker at the time (circa 2003) told me 'off the record' that he was at a staff meeting and one of the suits from the council said "we're out to fleece the leaseholders".
Now, that's not directly related to speed/school/ULEZ etc but it's abundantly clear that, especially as we know local authorities continually fight with budgets that aren't enough to cope with, it's all a money grabbing scheme.
IMO, if the A316 all the way from Apex Corner up to Pools in the Park (Richmond) was 40mph then from there to the Hogarth roundabout it was 30, there wouldn't be that many problems,. All this, 40, 30, 20, 30, 40, 20 etc is just insane.
There are always going to be accidents, unfortunately, but there has to be some common sense/middle ground. This accordion effect with speed limits in order to perfect 100% non-accident rates (which will never be achieved) is not the answer, IMO. | | | |
