Just got in from work and had to rush straight to this thread.
I came home to find a £100 cheque from the MoJ labeled 'fixed penalty notice' and no other information.
Assuming it's not a scam, what the fck was this for?

Got 6 month ban this Wednesday. One 36 mph in a 30 zone (fair) and three x 23mph in a 20 zone. Marvellous. The magistrate was empathetic and looked embarrassed to be fair. Maybe it was all about the £833 accompanying fine. The guy before me got his last 6 points for texting whilst driving and got a final warning and no ban btw. |
Sorry to hear that BC. This is one of the weaknesses of a rigid system that doesn't take context into account. Doing 23mph driving through an empty industrial estate at 11:30pm shouldn't carry the same punishment as doing 23mph driving past a primary school at 3pm. Conversely, texting whilst driving should be an automatic ban for me. | | | |

Just been done doing 26mph in a 20. Im driving around London constantly , so the chances of me getting done, is probably a lot higher than the average person. I actually dont mind the 20 speed limit these days tbh. Kinda got used to it. Accept for that 10 seconds on the 10/03/26 at 14.03 hours. I must have just lost my mind and decided to drive like a lunatic for shits and giggles. |  |

Just because the Council aren't directly making the money doesn't mean it isn't a money making operation.
And pulling the "it's my job" card doesn't make you right or command respect. On the contrary. I've often wondered which geniuses brought us crackpot ideas like 20mph, LTNs, time-restricted zones, oversized cycle lanes, bicycles allowed to go 2 ways on a one-way street, the various LEZs, and now radar speed cameras. Now I know.

Where roads better 35 years ago..? probably less cars. I think London roads have improved tbh.
Cars are now fitted with GPS and tell you when theres a speed camera ahead. If you have it switched on.
They got me bang to rights for my offence. Ive now done two speed awareness courses already, plus had to go to court 4 years ago to appeal some points for speeding. The problem must be with me . My missus drives me nuts when she drives... because she sticks to the speed limit at all times. !
Of course its a money making exercise as well as it being a safety feature. They could just give you points or a straight up ban after just two offences for example. But then i guess there's admin costs etc that needs to be paid for to sort all that out. So maybe it just covers those costs? | |

personally I like a 20mph area. There are two schools near where I live and all the surrounding roads are supposed to be 20mph.
But, they are clearly marked on the road and with signage.
The last fine I got was for driving past Latymers where the road is now for residents only!
The size of that sign, coming off the Talgarth Road is a joke, not sure how you can read an essay written on an A4 sign on a fast road when its placed about 10m before the turn...
I'm not sure its the speed limit that is the issue, its the changing between them all the time, with poor signage.
The A40 is pretty bad now, going from 70mph near Swakeleys down to 50, 40, 30, 40 etc...

Yeah school streets are fking bullshit. My brother lives off of one and when I go back to London I stay at his. I literally cannot get to his road between 8-9 and 3-4 on weekday (or leave if I'm already there).
