| West Ham v Arsenal 18:36 - May 10 with 27008 views | Westy75 | Maybe I don’t understand the rules of the game, but it’s odd that it’s a foul on Raya when you’ve got more than one Arsenal player virtually rugby tackling various West Ham players to stop them getting to the ball. Happens all the time but makes no sense that one is a foul and one isn’t. | | | | |
| West Ham v Arsenal on 12:22 - May 11 with 2732 views | charmr | All football leagues in the world follow the ifab rules of the game. Leagues however can interpret how forcibly they apply the rules. The premier league have started seasons applying stricter laws and have either watered them down or literally stopped. I haven’t seen a referee doing the 5 down hand count for gk’s for ages now. Start of the season yes. It’s not the referees fault but in the Premier league especially it’s placing their preferences and simply, PROTECTING THEIR PRODUCT. [Post edited 11 May 20:25]

| West Ham v Arsenal on 13:28 - May 11 with 2453 views | NorthantsHoop | Now looking very likely that West Ham will be joining us in the Championship next season. Them getting beaten at Brentford last week really pulled the rug on their survival and think that Spurs will win tonight and win at least another to stay up. Beating Arsenal was always a tall order, especially with them pushing for the title. Overall the VAR decision was right if not annoying as the draw would have put a bit more pressure on both Arsenal and Spurs in their final games. | | | |

| West Ham v Arsenal on 19:33 - May 11 with 2000 views | Northernr | The problem VAR will have, forever, is you're trying to make binary out of things that are subjective. I'm sitting watching Monday Night Football. We're ten minutes into analysing the incident. It's been shown frame by frame, from every angle. Jamie Carragher says it's a foul, Jermain Defoe says it isn't. VAR is seeking a perfection that does not exist.

| West Ham v Arsenal on 22:24 - May 10 by numptydumpty | No not really As said if QPR had that goal taken away in that manner and for a dubious decision , you would not be saying fair enough. If i was a religious man, i would say VAR is from the dark side. |
QPR's goal against Derby was disallowed for less contact than that and without great intervention of VAR. Imo, it was a foul on Raya, as the player's arm was across his chest and there was a grab on his left arm. Also, another West Ham player was holding the back of Raya's shirt. I also think there were a few foils committed by Arsenal players holding and obstructing West Ham ones. It seems that NFL rules have crept into Football rules by stealth. I also agree that VAR was meant for clear and obvious errors so anything that takes longer than 30 seconds to view, from multiple angles and in slow motion are not obvious. The law makers need to revisit the use of VAR and make a decision on how long a decision has to take and define what is meant by clear and obvious. Otherwise it is spoiling the fun of celebrating a goal and even watching the game.

| West Ham v Arsenal on 10:31 - May 11 by TheChef | Goalies always get special protection (not sure why) but anyway I was happy for Arsenal to win, would much rather them than City and the disappearing 115 charges. I really don't understand the antipathy towards Arsenal. Only downside is Spurs are going to survive the drop now. |
Totally agree, I want Arsenal to win it rather than Man City again. City have broken so many rules and due to litigation or some other reasons, the 115 charges are still ongoing, whilst other clubs have had points deducted or been fined (paltry amounts in Chelsea's case).

Shay Given on MOTD was saying that Arsenal have scored several similar goals this season that after VAR review were still given, he was not impressed! As you rightly say each decision is subjective which leads to inconsistency.

The rules say clear and obvious error. Almost all of VAR verdicts are always adjudicating on decisions that are not clear and obvious errors so in effect, not only do we have onfield referees and assistant referees making bad decisions but we now also have the entire VAR team spending many minutes each time on decisions that by the manner of the written law, they should not be judging on. So in effect, we get even more officials who make terrible human errors. The exact thing it was meant to resolve. If they actually went by the letter of the law, the system would work. Good referees are those that go unnoticed. VAR officials can be the key people at a match. That is very very wrong.... [Post edited 11 May 22:20]

I watched that bit and JC was adament that the Spurs player had time to head it away, saw the attacker coming and tried the overhead kick anyway .There is no way he had that much time IMO he decided to kick it away to safety and caught someone who came in from behind in the head a VAR penalty. Both refs today and Arsenal V West Ham called it the way they saw it yet VAR basically overruled them both which is stupid I feel. Spurs can thank their keeper for saving them tonight fair play to the kid bouncing back after Madrid

By this definition - "clear and obvious" : Is the foul(s) on Raya "clear and obvious"? Ref didn't see it, gave the goal. VAR, Arsenal fans and probably millions of viewers saw it on tv with multiple replays and slow-mo So "clear and obvious" to who? Wasn't "clear and obvious" to the ref initially, it was "clear and obvious" he missed it. With televised games, instant replays and multiple slow-mo in-game analysis - the human referee's task of officiating a game without any assistance (from VAR, AI or machines) has become virtually impossible. Everyone could see what the referee had missed.

| West Ham v Arsenal on 08:12 - May 12 with 1441 views | gazza1 | Last season VAR would have given QPR a penalty and sent off the WBA defender (Furlong) for handball on the line preventing us scoring. This season VAR would have stopped the penalty given to Swansea for a foul outside of the box. I'm sure there are many more incidents whereby VAR would have done the job......which refs failed to do. It was a foul on the Arsenal keeper and VAR got it right. | | | |

and is all the crap that goes with VAR, the end of goal celebrations etc worth it so we could have had a penalty midweek against West Brom 2 years ago (We'd already missed one that night) and might have got a draw against Swansea. Neither game would have moved the dial much in our league position

The same scenario in a different game next week and they'll give a different decision, the whole thing is just flawed but they are making too much money out of it to get rid now

When Jarred Gillett changed his mind, after going to the screen, should he have pulled a card out too? I thought possibly red endangering an opponent or certainly at least a yellow for reckless play.

| West Ham v Arsenal on 10:23 - May 12 with 1300 views | Northernr | That one last night should never have needed VAR, and it's amazing they had to look at it for as long as they did. He kicked him in the head. I think a lot of referees are now waving play on through pretty obvious penalties knowing that the screen will call them back if needs be. Same happened at Villa last week which was an obvious pull as well. | | | |

Yeah but it also needed Ampadu to continue to play dead. Would they have gone to VAR if he'd got back up and played on? All part of the performative theatre...
