That one last night should never have needed VAR, and it's amazing they had to look at it for as long as they did. He kicked him in the head.
I think a lot of referees are now waving play on through pretty obvious penalties knowing that the screen will call them back if needs be. Same happened at Villa last week which was an obvious pull as well. |
In the beginning I kinda hoped VAR would take the pressure off the ref but it seems to now have absolved themselves of any responsibility. Don't make the call? That's OK because the VAR team will tell you if it needs to be looked at.

Same thing happened in RL when they introduced the video ref 20 years ago. It's understandable, even more so for the PL with it's extraordinary global profile, why put yourself in the firing line by making a decision when you know someone will be in your ear about it if it is a foul? |  | | |

VAR is good when used to make a decision quickly. Last night, 13th minute of injury time, Spurs had a shout for a penalty. A quick check on VAR showed the player touched the ball. No penalty, but lets be honest when VAR is not present we have seen them given

The problem VAR will have, forever, is you're trying to make binary out of things that are subjective.
I'm sitting watching Monday Night Football. We're ten minutes into analysing the incident. It's been shown frame by frame, from every angle. Jamie Carragher says it's a foul, Jermain Defoe says it isn't.
VAR is seeking a perfection that does not exist.

Right well there's your issue then, if it's that subjective then it isn't "clear and obvious" so call stands. We're overcomplicating this.
Half the issue stems from the instructions refs were given to play advantage if they aren't sure and then VAR will sort it out. Let them ref, yes they're crp but so are the refs in every sport, it's a tough job. |  | | |
