| West Ham v Arsenal 18:36 - May 10 with 27007 views | Westy75 | Maybe I don’t understand the rules of the game, but it’s odd that it’s a foul on Raya when you’ve got more than one Arsenal player virtually rugby tackling various West Ham players to stop them getting to the ball. Happens all the time but makes no sense that one is a foul and one isn’t. | | | | |

| West Ham v Arsenal on 08:35 - May 11 by Watford_Ranger | Saw Darren Cann (former top level linesman) suggest banning attacking players from being in the six yard box at corners. Not the worst idea in theory but we’ll only end up with VAR checks to see if someone’s knee was in line with the paint or not. Plus obviously 99.9% of football isn’t the Premier League or VAR’d at all so we’re pouring more rules onto a simple sport to fix problems that shouldn’t exist. Nobody questions that goal pre-VAR. The same goal has stood in games with VAR. It will never work. |
Actual solution is staring them in the face.

Wouldn't banning attacking players from being in the six yard box at corners simply move the problem six yards? Players would do the same things outside the six yard box.

Why not allow each team to have say two calls to review a decision in a game, be it a penalty, a goal scored or not, or a red card. Have it as the managers decision to choose when to use a review, but obviously players could say to the manager, whether they think its worth reviewing or not. Would not include offsides in this, as this could be managed by technology in an instant. Ie. In the same way it is used for balls crossing the goal line decisions are made. Once, they have run out of reviews, tough potatoes !! [Post edited 11 May 9:26]

Not sure that does anything to avoid yesterday’s farce (unless Varteta has used up his appeals). You know any team looking to break the game up on top of goalkeeper cramp, taking three days to take a throw etc. would burn the appeals in the 95th minute on nothing just to kill things a bit more. They can make whatever tweaks they want but unless it’s scrapped fully it’ll be crap. [Post edited 11 May 9:29]

Yeh there's a 'captain's challenge' in rugby league now which is largely a farce because they don't have the camera angles for most of the decisions so they just pis away time watching different replays only to deem it "inconclusive", and teams under pressure or in need of a breather just spend it for that. Second half of the semi-final yesterday went on for nearly an hour, I turned it off in the end.

Well quite - and there is a reason the cricket system works. No replays, no feeds, nothing is shown until it is known there is going to be a review requested. So the reviews are entirely down to the gut instinct of the players on the field. It is absolutely incredible how impassioned appeals on the pitch suddenly turn to "nah, don't think he hit it". Could you have the same in football? I suspect you would have clubs with Head of Appeal Replays who would capture the footage and be able to replay it themselves with AI or something really quickly. Some sort of farce. I thought yesterday the tiresome Arteta actually intimidated VAR - he knew if he stepped out making those arm movements it would be shown. It was basically his own version of the appeal system? [Post edited 11 May 9:45]

They are doing trials for this where both teams get an appeal each, that would be a lot better but whatever version of VAR they use it's been proven now to not really be fit for purpose. They should scrap it

I don't really care who wins the league, as a neutral would have been nice to see it go to the last game at the top and bottom but this is just what top level football has become now, games decided in a tv studio rather than on the pitch. If that same incident had been in the Forest v Newcastle game yesterday a goal would have been given, thats the problem with it imo, just very selective on when they apply the laws [Post edited 11 May 10:36]

1) I don't come across many City fans so I couldn't care less if they win everything 2) Arsenal are anti-football, spend the whole time craving set pieces, totally cheat to win them, must be the least creative side to win the league since Leeds. 3) Arteta's behaviour on the touchline is vile 4) Gloryhunters supporting Arsenal who think they are real suffering football fans because they haven't won the league for 20 years 5) David Seaman - judas 6) Tony Adams - eee aww 7) Stewart Houston, Bruce Rioch 8) Steve Morrow 9) Being on the same train home on a Tuesday night when we've just drawn 0-0 at home to some drek and there is more chat amongst the R's fans than all the gloryhunters who've just seen their side beat PSG in the Champions League - no community, they don't know each other. 10) There is "arse" in their name 11) I don't like them 12) I don't like West Ham either, wanting them to win was not nice.

Stills never do anything justice though so that post is by no means conclusive. Also after things like yesterday people go looking for inconsistencies. They don't go looking for similar offenses that WERE given. Similar offenses may have been given 99% of the time in the PL this season - You'll always get people trying to use the 1% as 'proof' of a farce. Anyone that watches the footage from the angle behind Raya and wouldn't award a free kick to Arsenal is clearly biased. They were all over him and they kicked the ball directly into his gloves. He just couldn't catch it as he had a West Ham player hanging off his left arm and another one tugging his shirt as he's trying to jump. I hate VAR but I'd actually say yesterday was one of the rare occurrences that the game was better off for it.

So Arsenal (or any other team) 'cheating' to win free kicks in front of a referee and hundreds of cameras and a review system is worse than Man CIty racking up 115 charges for breaking rules, then lying / not co-operating in an attempt to cover them up? Not sure you're being remotely impartial there. Like wanting Lance Armstrong to beat Cadel Evans because you don't like the colour of Evans' bike.

Yeh what you'd be doing by bringing that in is creating another situation for VAR to get involved with the MS Paint lines and a freeze frame to work out whether player X had his left bollock over the six yard line before the ball was kicked. Now with the added bonus of trying to get a split screen frozen in the same frame, one covering the six yard box, and one covering the ball being struck from the corner. Hours of fun.

The problem is it's humans interpreting the rules and what they have seen so there will always be differences. VAR is just basically more 'refs' so the problem is multiplied. Ether you have a fully automated system with no humans involved (I understand there's a bigger picture here, software/programming/implementation etc) or you don't. We've just gone form one Ref to four (the ref + 3 VAR). Go back to just the ref & linos. It's got out of hand even though i see they were at least trying, but it's not working. The problem is that Pandora's box is open and by closing it up again someone somewhere will have to admit it didn't work and no wants to do that because it's all about saving face. So what, I think it's more human to admit something didn't work out, even with the best intentions, and to roll it back and maybe re-think again. [Post edited 11 May 12:24]
