The night I saw The Smyths at The Ship in Kilburn (QPR fan John Mc used to run the place) the band were celebrating the fact that as of that night, they had outlasted The Smiths!
I think they've broken up now, but they were brilliant.

Saw the Illegal Eagles last year who have been going 30 years. Absolutely brilliant, never saw the legal ones and obviously never will. Had a shock when the lead had an Essex or London accent.

Top drawer live I had to copy their description from Wiki as it's a hard one to explain
"Elvis-fronted Nirvana is a British crossover tribute band which performs the music of American grunge band Nirvana in the style of an Elvis impersonator."
Effectively ripping off Dread Zeppelin who do reggae covers of Led Zeppelin tunes with Tortelvis, an Elvis impersonator, as the lead singer.

Probably the two best I've seen were Whole Lotta Led and Hells Bells who were absolutely brilliant Zeppelin and ACDC covers bands.
I saw Boot Led Zep about, ooh, 15 years ago now at the Gordon Craig in Stevenage. I mention the venue because it was a stones throw from Knebworth, as some wag in the audience pointed out more than once, without any response from the band.
First time i’d seen a tribute act and they didnt break character once, which I found a bit weird. “Jimmy” was a lefty though.
ps - E17. I’ve got that Dread Zeppelin album. Love it to bits. Black Dog especially. Great shout 👍

Living in rural France we don't get any name bands. Local (12 kms) bar has put on a whole series. Last year we had a Pink Floyd, U2 and Simple Minds. This year we've already had Stoned, French Stones cover. Upcoming are Foo Fighters and Pink.
We've seen Australian Pink Floyd 3 times. Excellent. And Dire Straits Experience, with the original sax player from the real Dire Straits. Also saw Coldplayed, a French tribute, who were pretty good.
Aussie PF probably the best.

I'd second that, I've seen them live and they were terrific.
Purple Zeppelin do exactly what the tin says and are quality.
While we're on this subject, let me give a nod to Tim "Ripper" Owens who progressed from being the lead singer in a Judas Priest tribute act to being the actual front man in the band whose songs he'd been covering .

An acquaintance of mine was in a local band heavily influenced by Status Quo, John Coghlan then hired them, minus the drummer, to be 'John Coghlan's Quo' playing classic 70s Quo stuff. Does it still count as a tribute band if it has an original member?

Shout out to Limehouse Lizzy who I've seen numerous times over the years. The first time I saw them was at the old Cartoon club in Croydon completely by accident in about 2002. Absolutely awesome. They played quite regular at the Half Moon in Putney and all over the place really.
Another vote for Boot Led Zeppelin too, had a couple of different Percy Plant's over the years, but last time I saw them;2023 in Hampton, the original one had re-joined and was magnificent.

I was a founder member of The Smyths in 2002 but I left in 2004 when I moved out of London. Yes they're definitely still going, and apart from me they still have the same lineup that they started out with.
Not sure if I was in the band when you saw them at The Good Ship, I know they played there loads of times but only the first couple were while I was still with the band. John McCooke though, what an absolutely lovely bloke.
A couple of QPR related highlights of my short spell in the band.....
We did a gig up in Glasgow where Stephen Street DJed afterwards. I hadn't realised until I met him that he was a QPR fan!
And there was one of our first gigs which was at The Half Moon in Putney where Kevin Gallen & one of his brothers turned up. Had a good chat with him outside after the gig. He just wanted to ask me questions about The Smiths. And I just wanted to ask him questions about QPR. That was the season where we ended up getting promoted at Sheffield Wednesday. Fun times!
