A few more observations.
Morgan, little game involvement and lacked quality
Morrison, solid and read the game well
Mbengue, he's obviously been to the crossing meeting
Chair, shaking off the rust a bit
Overall, it was okay for 60 mins with mainly the B team. The quality of play improved significantly as the subs came on and we finished with most of the A team out there. |  | | |

He's definitely toying with Chair in a two with Madsen.
Thought Varane did well in a 10 role first half.

If we can go through the season with minimal injuries (I know - one can only dream) then our first team is something to get excited about, especially with the new additions.
If we have another injury crippled season then I just don't think we have enough depth to push onwards. That would be my takeaway from this game, although I should know better than judge anything based on pre-season. | | | |

1st teamers stepped it up a level 2nd half as you'd hope.
Refreshing to see a CM in Isak doing things other than playing it sideways and back, agree on him potentially being ahead of Morgan, now needs to show that in a competitive match.
Poku lively. Madsen, Chair & Vale showed class.
In the past, ball going back to the keeper would likely bring a groan. With Charles, I’m excited to see what attack he’ll launch with that quarterback passing. |  | | |

Much better second half. Burrell looks sharp as does Kone. The Boy looks solid and Madsen looks calm and reassuring. Poku and Alemayehu look promising and Mbengue's crosses have improved but was out of position on a couple of occasions. Adamson and Morgan are not going to be challenging for the match day squad at this rate. Chair and Vale's corners were good but I'm still unsure about Morrison whereas JCS was assured but a tad worrying about Larkeche's injury. Finally, Charles' distribution was good apart from one occcasion where he got closed down but he was not really tested which is down to a sound defensive performance. |  | | |

It was quite difficult to work out the formation today, especially as the angle of the camera video was quite low. I thought it was either 4231 or 4141. It was interesting to see Burrell playing wide on the left, but I'm not sure he's a winger. [Post edited 21 Jul 15:18]

Only caught the second half but thought we stroked it round very nicely and looked a class above (as we should). Just lacked that final ball for the most part. Hard to judge as pre-season plans can quickly cower when confronted with Championship reality, but I wonder if this season we will try to play more possession based football, built from the back, rather than counter attacking? | | | |

Some nice bits and bobs again. I still would like the wide players to go on the outside more and also try and get more shots away from the edge of the box. We do try to often to pass the ball into the net.

I think we will probably still sign another midfielder because, as Clive says, signing players is what we do; but am intrigued by the prospect of Alemayhu becoming a regular. Just so nice to see a midfielder wanting to move the ball forward whilst retaining possession. We have Varane who retains possession but passes backwards, and Morgan who passes forward but sadly struggles to retain possession.
As fans we want nothing more than youngsters to break into the first team. But when it actually looks like happening we all say (myself included) "we want him in the first team, but please not this season. Can't he go out on loan?" But if you are good enough, why not? The star player for the world champions is 18. Rare, but some youngsters are just ready.

I think (and hope) that we'll sign more players for central midfield, but I still see no reason why Alemayehu can't play a lot in midfield this year. After all, it is a problem area, and one where we've lost two bodies.
He is nearly 20, after all, and a player that was playing first-team domestic and continental football when we bought him.
The only concern might be his strength, but he's as strong as Morgan was when he started two years ago. | |
