Make them come in on their day off and practice pens. First game and we are already handing soft goals and games to the opposition. Thoughts from the game
Millwall seem to always have an edge over us even when we have been very good and they have been rubbish (over the years). Today we were the better team but lost in a penalty shoot out.
Charles stuffed up for the goal - I love his distribution but am now worried about both keepers as they have stuffed up with balls they should be able to deal with.
Jensen looked class in goal for Millwall (saved all four penalties and a few decent chances in the match)
I thought Mbengue wanted to make things happened and was ok and on a few occasions did not deliver.
Dunne played well and just about scored.
Edwards was solid.
Kemper played well and was unlucky not to score - love his attitude and approach
Madsen was rock solid
Smyth was effective and Millwall players should have been booked early on for fouling him
I worry about Chair he slows us down and messes up on a few occasions like when trying to pass in Kone in to score
Generally set pieces were poor (apart from when Dunne nearly scored)
Burrell was poor and I am not sure is suited out wide
Vale was ok but one corner was terrible (he seems to defer to Chair all the time on set pieces - why can't Madsen take set pieces as he is more accurate that Chair and Vale????)
Kone struggles against Cooper
Burrell is not a wide man and struggled.
Lloyd did well when he came on.
Saito was good too.
Poku unsure?
Adamson was ok
Varane was ok
Just feel we remain mentally weak and are going to be outmuscled by a lot of teams although we are more skillful than most of them
imho Millwall are not very good but they are effective and well drilled. [Post edited 8 Aug 16:46]

Was very disappointed with him, as someone who has defended him often when others have been critical. Gets a game in the ‘10’ and Burrell gets wasted on the wing as a result. Always wanted the ball as ever but some awful decision-making and a weak as shot when through on goal.

I thought we were decent overall, and had we not gifted them a goal we would have won that. I thought we were robbed given it was deffo a penalty on Saito, but after seeing our penalties not so sure :)

He's minuscule with no physical presence for a keeper. you don't have to be a football guru to see that he will get targeted this season. It's all well and good being "good with your feet" but I'd rather have a keeper who's adept in all the core facets of goalkeeping and be imposing physically. Millwall's keeper, Jensen being a case in point.
So to date, both replacements for Walsh have made howlers. Plus ca change. I'd also add that due to Walsh's height, that goal scored by Millwall wouldn't have arisen. | | | |

He made one clanger. The sort of clanger every goalkeeper big or small makes at some point. Looked a huge step up on the ball from anything we’ve had for years if not ever. We don’t know if he can stop the ball as he didn’t have a save to make bar the penalties where one save looked great from the other end. He’s unlikely to be a mug if City have bought him. | | | |
