Stupid , ridiculous comment.
Showed for the ball, was the first to chase back, largely kept possession. He was the last person you could blame for today.

He's missed the best part of two seasons with injuries so hes going to take a fair bit of time to get to where he was.

Against popular opinion I am not too bothered about the Cups . I agree with Sinton , the real season starts next week . |
I disagree with you, obviously (the only major trophy this great club has ever held - our competitions this season already reduced by one-third etc).
But I do concede that today felt a bit weird and unique - the sun shining, first game of the season at LR and yet the Ellerslie and Lower School End all but empty. Maybe this gave the players that pre-season feel, particularly first half. That won't be the case against Bolton.
Don't get me wrong, I like the novel idea of the League Cup on the Saturday, but it did feel strange. So I do get what Sints, yourself and others are saying.

Charles distribution: premier league
Varane: has he learned to pass forward, and. could he have a season this yr like Madsen did last year?
Dunne/ Edwards: v solid centre half pairing
Play: we looked to knock it about
Negatives:
Burrell - terrible/ no apparent effort (somebody near me claims to be ITK says he is sulking because made to play on the wing, but doesn't seem like him?). But not even jumping for balls.
Mbenge: coudln't trap a bag of cement on today's showing
Lloyd: lovely chap, but he is a L2 player - we need Kolli

Chair should have been sold 2 years ago. He’s now seeing out his days at the club. Burrell was played out wide to accommodate Chair. Burrell has more of an outcome than Chair. If Chair was say a Tarabat you could build a team around him, but he’s not at that level. I literally couldn’t tell you the last time he had a MOTM performance and ran the game as our number 10. We need to improve as a side and we need to move on from him. Our midfield is once again going to be the biggest concern this season. Not enough quality there to kick on into the top 8. | | | |

Penalty aside which WAS poor, I felt if anything Chair was trying too hard, forcing the issue a little instead of using his natural ability to make things happen. As others have said, he is a little rusty after two serious injuries, but I think if he can stay fit then in a few games time he will be fully back in the groove. Still our most influential player by some distance. | | | |

His set pieces werent great generally although one nearly led to a goal got cleared off the line.
I wonder though... Madsen is also a threat in that air at set pieces, whereas Chair is certainly not. I wonder if Stephan feels like that makes up for the dropoff from Madsen to Chair in delivery? |  | | |

Lloyd was decent when he came on. If he does that this season, he will be perfectly decent off the bench.

He wasn’t the worst player out there. Exceptionally frustrating and made the wrong choices but Mbengue couldn’t control the football.
Was fuming for an hour or two after the game but there was a lot to like about the performance. If it had been a draw in a league game we’d be saying that, didn’t take the opportunities and restricted them to basically nothing. I really hope we don’t persist with Burrell wide but if we do, play him left and Smyth right. Maybe the longer term plan is Kamara in midfield and pushing Vale up or 4-4-2 again.
There’s a lot to like about the squad but he’s got to find an XI that works and quickly. There’s a huge opportunity with the early run of games to rack up some wins and if we burn those the dream of scraping 8th starts to look gone before the clocks change. | | | |

Seeing some post on Chairs performance. Obviously about opinions and it was not his best outing, but I didn't think he stank. Overall in normal time we controlled the game bar the last 15 mins in trying to get an equaliser. Before that the goal gifted to them was there only effort on target.
IMO I thought Kone had a poor game. Burrell is not a winger, but I didn't see him sulking.
That Vale faded second half. Varane very good when he came on.
One thing that did irk me a little was when Dunne received the ball in the right back area he constantly turned back in and played it back to Charles. Several times he had a pass on but chose to recycle it back to Charles or Edwards.
Probably Kemper our best player. Kept Azeez quiet most of the time. |  |

Was a typical first game of the season with both sides not on their game. But, I thought we generally looked good through that first half. Our moving and passing looked good; keeper distribution was good; our fitness seemed ok; everyone seemed up for it.
The goal was disappointing from both Mbengue (giving the ball away with a terrible pass) and Charles' poor decision-making on the cross (just tip it over).
Agree with most here, Burrell was in the wrong position and wasn’t engaged in the game at all; Chair was disappointing overall; Vale was a bit underwhelming for me; overall our final third work was woeful - all that possession up front and no shots on target is piss poor I’m afraid. That said, I thought we looked good in the middle and across the back
Penalties? What a pile of shit! Our four should be embarrassed and put in stocks at the training ground tomorrow. Call yourselves professionals!
