| Awful team selection on 22:30 - Sep 6 by ozexile | 1 point the most we're realistically going to get? I hope this isn't the clubs policy this season. We're top of the table at home, why wouldn't we realistically get 3 points? |
Exactly. JS had to juggle the squad but to say he had no other options is questionable. If we don't win against Charlton it'll look like poor squad management.
| Awful team selection on 22:50 - Sep 6 with 1780 views | davman | You do have to rotate as the modern game is just nuts, but playing BOTH Lloyd AND Burrell on Weds seems strange when Kone is so off form and it was fairly obvious how we'd start on Saturday with a half fit off form striker. I strongly suspect that Kone simply does not fit our style of play, but that does not change the fact that he'd have been much better playing on Weds and giving Lloyd a run on Saturday if Burrell HAD to be rested. It is an interesting one that little clubs like us and Charlton are examples where Sports Science rules the roost and managers can no longer make decisions on who stays on; they have to listed to the "experts". It is interesting that despite that rotation we still manage to knacker players that were rested - doesn't really scream rotation is protecting them, does it? Why can Dunne, Edwards, Mbengue and Vale play EVERY game but others can't? Are they super human compared to everyone else, better conditioned or just lucky with how their body is? ...and if rotation is sooooo key, how can Haaland play 52 games last season + the World Cup, Kane can play 65 games for club and country? Even in our league, Vipotnik played 48 games, Bishop 43 games, Tommy Conway 48 games, Cramma and Neghli 48 games, Cooper 47 games, Ayling 46 games? I could go on, the first QPR player to appear on the most appearances in the Championship from last season is Richard Kone in equal 52nd with 43. MBengue is second in 80th with 41 and Jimmy Dunne 3rd in 109th with 39. Even on average with 24 teams in the league we should have our top 3 in the top 72. Way off. Why can everyone else seem to do it? Either we buy crocks (strong evidence there), train and condition completely wrong for the players we have, have some issue with the ground they are training on or the pitch they are playing on, are unlucky or are genuinely cursed. Rotate and we get injuries, don't rotate and we get injuries. ...but play a basically immobile player up top who is clearly carrying an injury against Middlesbrough and guess what happens? That is not Kone's fault and I am sure that he will get better again, but his form and fitness are just not there yet. I was much more sanguine about all this than others coming out of the ground on Saturday. I mean, we're parring the course so far surely - beating the teams we expect to beat and not beating the first semi-decent team we come across (although as with every single season, the top teams in this league aren't all that, are they?). It is early days, but down to Burrell who they apparently can't play each game, Lloyd, who has great energy, but is nowhere near Championship class and the unknown Obikwu. I hope Stephan has a plan to play without a striker unless he can build bridges with Kolli... [Post edited 6 Sep 22:53]

| Awful team selection on 20:37 - Sep 6 by JamesB1979 | I imagine wanted to play his best central midfield against Cardiff. And with Edwards and Dunne, and Burrell, his first choice spine of the team. And we go the 3 points there, so he probably feels like “job done” |
I get that but do wonder why Varane couldn't have played a bit more in one of the games. It just felt to me he got it wrong went from strongest midfield to no midfield but he does have hands tied a bit by the on going issue of players can't do 90 minutes so I wouldn't be too harsh on him.

Doesn’t sound like we’re too far away (2-3 weeks) from Lamptey, Kamara and Cirkin doing full 90 minutes, according to Stephan anyway. Just got to get through to this international break.

Ultimately, Stephan picks the team. We have rectified many of the issues from last season, including the goalkeeper and full backs. He has a decent squad now. Yes, we can't play the same eleven players every match but the team on Saturday felt like too many changes and not enough oomph, which played out in that first half. And we really can't complain too much about having to rest players when we have Kolli being ostracised. That's a ridiculous situation which needs resolving, particularly if we're resting Burrell every couple of matches.

The truth is everyone is not doing so much better than us injury wise at the current time. Although we certainly did worse last season which is why we’re trying to do better this. Part of that is the rotation policy both for games and in game management. It doesn’t mean though that players won’t get injured, of course not. But it hopefully means that we reduce the possibility of thst happening. I don’t get why that is so controversial. But at the current time if you look at Blackburn, they have eight players out with injuries ; Millwall has seven out and Charlton has seven out. We don’t want that to happen to our injury prone players like Cirkin, Poku, Lamptey and Kamara so we’re trying to stage them coming back but they’re still contributing and we’re still doing better on the pitch than I thought we would at this stage of the season. And yes I thought it was common knowledge that they’re coming to us because they’ve been injured (Poku aside) otherwise they would be playing for clubs who can pay them more than us. We’ve lost one match where we rotated a couple of our better but injury prone players. Against a team that beat us 3-1 and 4-0 last season and we lost narrowly. And people are making out that Stephan has made a massive mistake. I hope the aftermath of every match isn’t going to be like this as it’ll be a very long season.

Look what happened to Chris Willock when Beale was in charge. There is no argument or alternative opinion. |
Yes there should be no doubt he has to rotate players during these 3 day weeks. But to me and I think many others it could have been done better for the games against Cardiff and in particular Boro. As it was we didn't get our best players on until too late when possibly one or two could have started and been subbed early, particularly in central midfield - aren't Varane or Isak available for some minutes? But we don't really know very much about the physical condition of all our players, so possibly Stefan couldn't do much more than he did. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I’m not sure Stephan fancies Varane. Seems that his first choice is Madsen and Kamara. And then next in line is Edwards with Vale if JCS can play in defence. Does a manager really look 2 games ahead when selecting for game 1? I don’t think so and a bit risky too. Think he just went with his first choice midfield and defence for Cardiff. And given fitness of Kamara and Lamptey that drove his selection for Boro.

One game at a time, but wrong choices were made v Cardiff - why play Burrell for 90 minutes?? why play Lloyd for 80?? and there were other decisions made player wise which were wrong including Lamptey. It was, without doubt, an awful team selection which cost us dearly and gave Boro a 'big lift'. What team does he pick against Charlton??...... Burrell??, Lamptey??, Kamara?? I have heard it all before re resting players when they play midweek internationals and how tired they get travelling on First Class aircraft sets/beds. Its nonsense.
| Awful team selection on 08:19 - Sep 7 with 1227 views | nadera78 | I actually thought JS's biggest mistakes were the subs, not the starting line up (which I can broadly accept because of the fitness situation). We were on the back foot from kick off, largely because Poku and Vale refused to mark anyone on our right hand sand, so when Chair went down I'd have pushed Vale into the 10 role and brought on Varane to stiffen the spine. And in the second half they were unsettled by our pace up front so I'd have thrown Lloyd up there alongside Burrell instead of bringing on 2 CMs who slowed the game down with sideways passes. I also thought their manager did a really good job of adjusting to us in the second half - took off a couple of attackers and moved to a back 5 to negate Burrell's pace by surrounding him with defenders. He ended up isolated and outnumbered. Boro also killed the game very well towards the end, frustrating for us but very professional. | | | |

Well I've heard Stephan say many times that he has to keep in mind the demands of upcoming 3 game weeks when making his selections for game 1, and how long players will play. He may or may not be doing a good job of that, it's hard to know when we don't really know how fit or not all the players are, but he's clearly got upcoming games in mind.

"wrong choices were made v Cardiff ..." You know QPR beat Cardiff? I think that makes the choices the right ones - but hey, who can really say what's winning and losing? In fact, so far I have seen us win three games, draw one and lose one from five. Obviously not as good as if someone was in charge who just played the best players every game regardless of whether they had injuries or fitness levels to be managed as they hadn't done preseason - but not bad for a hipster amateur like Stephan. My counter is that QPR lost the game against Boro because Paul Smyth lost his tackle on the edge of the box, the ball was crossed to where a £10m striker who will play for England nipped in between our CBs to slide home. Later, Harvey Vale hit the woodwork from a shot which he'd scored an identical winner against Stoke last season. Fine margins. That's what happens sometimes. Chair, QPR's best player, going off early totally disrupted us too. We look a very decent squad, better than we have been, with a good coach. It's all jockeying for position until the first international break, a bit like an extended preseason. I'd say we're ahead of where we were meant to be, except the Chair and Kone injuries are a big setback. But West Ham is where the season really kicks off. Glass very much hall full for now. We’re talking about professional sportsmen, most of whom are in their 20s. They get paid obscene amounts of money and play on pitches that are perfect, yet it seems many can’t handle a couple of games of football a week. All this talk of “conditioning” and “managing” them. Modern football. It’s pathetic a lot of the time if you ask me.

You start that same side if all fit, try to exert dominance - get a goal in front, un-nerve the oppo, then rest the players that need it. Not hand them a win on a f**king plate... Piss poor selection today, for me. I left the ground absolutely raging. |

| Awful team selection on 10:26 - Sep 7 with 942 views | Juzzie | Here we go again.... it's going to be a long season on here. Every time we don't win a game it'll be"the wrong starting XI, the wrong tactics, the wrong subs" and so on. Comments you generally don't get when a game is won. As I've illustrated many times on here, in order to win more games than you draw & lose, you'll need to finish top 5. Anyone finishing under top 5 will draw & lose more games than they win and from this season that'll easily get you into the play off. Same when we conceded first, especially in the first 20 mins or so..... cue meltdown despite there still being 70+ minutes of the game to go. | | | |
| Awful team selection on 10:59 - Sep 7 with 874 views | Jimboqpr | I don't get all the anger either to be honest. We beat Cardiff/Blackburn/Portsmouth because they're either the same or below our level, and we lost to Boro because they're competing for automatic promotion and have a £10+ million pound striker who is scoring against every team he plays against at the moment. We got battered by this team last season and we gave them a much better game than we did last season on Saturday and we were a bit unlucky not to get a 1-1. That's progress for me, I don't like seeing us lose, but if we do then I don't mind a narrow 0-1 loss compared to us making other Championship opposition look like the 1970 Brazil team. Lets get a bit of perspective. The term 'Awful team selection' is far too strong. Plymouth away in the cup last season was in that category for me, this was no where near that. I always remember Warbs saying a lot when he was in charge, its about narrowing the gap between your best performance and your worst and so far we're doing that in my opinion. Its also about how you bounce back from a defeat so I'm more interested in seeing the reaction in midweek. [Post edited 7 Sep 11:01]

He didn't get it wrong against Cardiff. We won. Asking people on messageboards on Monday to pick a team for a match in two days who have no idea the fitness of players who played on Saturday, and in some cases three days before that, and four days before that, is mad. How do we know who can play, who is fit? Poku looked like he took a knock. But did he? Kone looked cooked - but maybe it was just a twinge. We've just signed a load of players who have not had preseason, and some cases have barely played in the last season or so. They may be our best technically gifted players too. But in order for us to play them in the winter, they need their minutes managed. We have others coming back from injury who need gradual minutes. Why is this so controversial? And why is beating Cardiff in fact defeat?

He played Burrel and Lloyd because they have pace. Cardiff are a possession based team who play a high line. Both those players can press and hit on the counter attack with one ball through. See Burrells goal. It's not JS fault that we missed so many chances that he couldn't remove them earlier. Burrell is coming back from a hamstring injury and Lloyd hasn't got the stamina of him and was shattered. Hence Kone started against Boro. And I'd say Kone needed to play to try and get him back in form. As for Charlton away, I think Lloyd will start up top on his own. With Burrell on for the last 20 min.

Wait, is Alfie Lloyd QPR's "No2 striker"? Do you think if Lloyd had started against Boro QPR would have got something from the game? Am I reading that correctly? My bet to you is Will Lankshear has more chance of playing for England than Alfie Lloyd has of scoring 15 goals in a Championship throughout his career. Let's see if either hit that milestone.

| Awful team selection on 12:01 - Sep 7 with 674 views | Malintabuk | This week is going to be very interesting... we play the 20.00 at Charlton on Wednesday and then up to WBA on the Saturday for the 12.30,..... there is not a lot of recuperation time there. For me the more winnable game here is the Charlton game so would JS target this for a win... on the hope of nicking a result on Saturday Of course the squad, players availability, fitness, tiredness all come into play. But I sometimes wonder if we miss a trick here. Boro closed the game down very very well, changed their formation and basically played the game out I often wonder with the technical ability we now have, perhaps go 5 at the back against WBA... 4 in midfield and just one up top... I guess that would depend on the Charlton result, but if we do manage a win... perhaps a more .... let's say vonservative game plan might just help us | | | |
