That defeat is down to the team he put out 90% of the energy and pace was sitting on the bench it's ok to rest players but he needs to consider the opposition first today Wednesday's team would have won today hopefully hKe learns from this defeat also Kone should not even be considered to be on the bench until he gets himself fit at present he is a liability

I am astonished that the management of playing time for some is either not understood or just disregarded. It's not as if it's hard to grasp why this needs to be done.

The management of playing time is absolutely important. However, there's a balance. We know how strong their midfield is - Stephan experienced that personally last season. Surely you start with Kamara - he came on anyway. Is there really much difference in starting him then bringing him off rather than the other way round? And if there is, why not play Varane?

Really odd to bring Saito on for Chair too. Surely that's when Madsen comes on?

And upfront, if you must rest our best striker, couldn't Lloyd have started? Kone is so out of sorts that it meant we couldn't get up the pitch. And if you're resting Lloyd too, what about Obikwu? Wasn't he signed EIGHT months ago for this purpose? And then there's Kolli...

Boro were nothing special. We made it easy for them.

No it’s not the same starting Kamara as ending with Kamara. One is just mathematics. He came on at the 67th minute. So that’s 90 - 67 + 6, so he played 29 minutes thereby less than half the amount of time Ronnie played in midfield. The other is the level of play: it’s generally more physically intensive in the early part of matches when the other team is fresh and there’s more pressing and physical battles. I don’t know why he didn’t play Varane, perhaps he’s carrying a knock. He’s certainly not a like for like player and less likely to get you up the pitch.

Madsen didn’t come on earlier because he’s coming back from injury and they’re managing his minutes. Lloyd is a decent point but he’s not the same player as Kone and I think he likes to bring him on at the end when defenders are tiring and he has more impact. The two subs early on probably stuffed Stephan a bit in terms of what he really planned in terms of subs because it used up two of your sub windows as well as two players.

I don’t know why he started with Kone but that’s part of the reason and I don’t think Obikwo is ready to play against Middlesbrough quite yet after barely playing for months and hardly at all for the first team.

We didn’t make it easy for Boro in the second half. If that were the case they wouldn’t have had to take us out a couple of times and have dying swan impressions for large parts of the game.it seems like one of their strategies: get back quickly to snuff out attacks but on the occasions where you can’t get back quickly enough just take someone out and live with the booking.

Especially after last season. And even more so with Kamara, Cirkin and Lamptey signings. And then injury issues with JCS and Poku.

My only gripe was if a striker scores twice midweek then he starts the next game, they’re confidence players and he must have been chomping at the bit to have started.

Loftboy as you know and probably saw for yourself, Burrell played the full game on Wednesday and looked absolutely shot in the last twenty minutes or so. Last season we lost him for five months, when he was on fire, and are currently trying to look after him.

In fact, I was surprised that it was Lloyd who was subbed and not Rumarn on Wednesday and that when Kone was injured yesterday, I was expecting Alfie to replace him.

I don’t believe any of us expect any of our players to play every minute of every game but setting us up like that gave the game to Boro. It allowed Morris to run the first half and we were lucky to go in 0-1 at HT….that goal was coming for 10 minutes before they scored. So, start with our strongest side and change players when we are in front or still level later in the game. Stephan got it horribly wrong yesterday. Having said that Boro were arsehole lucky to get the win. You’d bet your house on Rumarn scoring when he was put through on goal and any other day Vale’s shot goes in off the bar. I left the ground gutted we didn’t get something out of the game because we were electric in the second half. Last season we would’ve lost that game 0-4. We go again! COYRs!!!

Scooters, Tunes, Trainers and QPR.

Fair enough, could have started him and he be brought him off at half time.

Trouble is, we could have been talking about Burrell coming off injured and Kone replacing him. Its all about ifs and buts and maybe's - We have to be sensible if we are to be successful this season. He made numerous changes on Wednesday and it worked and JS had done a good job, sadly he had to do more this weekend and I suspect more will be made on Wednesday again. I do expect a much stronger side against Charlton where Lamptey/Kamara and a few others played minimal minutes yesterday but lets see

Fans will always focus on the game before them and to hell with tomorrow. Thankfully the club are finally thinking more strategically: so this could lose us 1 point (prob the most we were ever realistically going to get) but it wouldn’t leave us with half a team injured or out of gas before a winnable game at Charlton on Wednesday. It’s just so easy to say “start Burrell, bring on kone when you are winning.” We still prob wouldn’t have been winning so on 60 mins you would be faced with brining off your best players 1-0 down or maybe 0-0. Can just see how the same fans complaining now would have reacted to that!

My only criticism is that I felt that either Kamara or Madsen should have started the game, with one substituting for the other when required. That way they could have had 45 minutes each, or 60/30 with that being reversed on Wednesday.

I had expected Kone to start the match, but in retrospect he wasn't up to it, He has been carrying a knock (no idea what) for months now. That needs to be resolved before risking him again.

Just to add to the fun Charlton fans are moaning like hell about Nathan Jones rotation strategy. They took off Tyreece Campbell against Stoke after 26 minutes and apparently that’s a big reason they lost 4-0.

I find it quite amusing because a lot of them didn’t rate Campbell last season when Clive and I thought he was one of their best players. Fickle isn’t in it, he’s now the Messiah because he’s scored three goals this season.

Little bit concerned that NJ is targeting us as his points target for this week being the home match after two away games.

Yeah I wanted another body in midfield - Edwards and Vale in a two and Chair playing in the ten role let Middlesbrough play through us as Chair was always wrong side of the ball. Personally I thought Varane would start as it was his type of game and Vale did 90 minutes on Wednesday.

Varane was slow out to Ng on Weds but is too defensive usually. I thought Vale was poor, but Varane would have been too defensive. Varane for Edwards and Vale/Varane in the middle? No thanks.

It's always noisiest at the shallow end

Of course it is the Managers poor team selection played a massive part in not getting anything out of the game and handing 3 points to a very decent Boro team…..I thought we would get beat once I knew the team selection but I hoped I would be wrong-I wasnt

He selected the weakest team he could have….leaving key players out of the starting line up.to put Burrell on the bench was absolute madness…..our best striker, our quickest pacy striker and our best chance of scoring. If there were concerns he should have played him less time against Cardiff but he played him for the full 90 minutes plus. Why?

Kone gets a start despite his absolute abysmal start to the season and such a poor player. I am no big fam of Lloyd but why did he not get a run?

Lamptey should have started too, decent player indeed.

Very strange substitution when Chair got injured! kaito is a wide player, not attacking CM! Why would you do that?

The manager picked the worst team he could…..and I thought he was doing ok this season with his team selections & substitutions.

I think your point about the two unexpected substitutions is a really valid one. Especially Chair. With him being rested for the bulk of the Cardiff game (I don’t think he would have come on at all if we hadn’t ceded soo much territory to Cardiff in the final 20 mins)it was clear that JS intended to play him for the full 90 yesterday. Maybe not all centrally, he might have moved him to the wing or supporting the striker. They were probably hoping Kone would do an hour or til HT at least. Also as you point out that was two substitute ‘windows’ used up.
I’m as disappointed as anyone, I especially hate losing 1-0 as it is the worst score of all imo. So near to getting something out of the game and not even having a goal to cheer. But I fully understand the strategy of managing the players. Last year we had more talent (and value) sitting in the stands than on the pitch and while we may not have sustained a realistic push for the play-offs it certainly scuppered the second half of the season. We have a really strong squad, but sadly they are not all yet match fit. JS said Lamtey and Cirkin are only a couple of weeks away from doing a full 90. What an exciting prospect that is! Imagine if either (or both) break down in the next couple of games because we over-played them? We just need to be patient. We are in a healthy position, table-wise. I am more irritated by some of the players ON the pitch yesterday like Vale, Smyth and Mbengue who I felt could have done more, especially first half.

Because you have some on here who are still unable to accept it isn't 1986. The last year of 1 substitute.

We've had a good start, but still they find a reason to slag the coach off. Top supporters.

And watching Arsenal play. Raya, Califori, Gabriel, Rice, Odegaard, Saka, Tzolis, Havertz etc all seem capable of playing on a weekend and then midweek.

Think those lot of played a few more games last season than Lamptey, Cirkin and Kamara. The debate over playing those 3 back to back in a 3 game week is ridiculous. Stephan has already said, many times, 3 more weeks until they will be fully ready.

We all knew those 3 wouldn’t be with us if they were ready to play from the off

you have to rotate which I get and I didn't excpect Kamara or Lamptey to start but to go into that game without a natural central midfield player was madness. If you know you have this problem why play Madsen and Kamara the other night rather than play one in each game.

We did better second half even before the changes but really gave ourselves a lot to do picking that team.

I imagine wanted to play his best central midfield against Cardiff. And with Edwards and Dunne, and Burrell, his first choice spine of the team. And we go the 3 points there, so he probably feels like “job done”

Completely agree that he had to rotate, he possibly got the balance wrong on that, but understand why he did it.

The bigger problem is the lack of options in midfield. While the transfer window looks to have been successful overall the issues in central midfield haven't really addressed, and hopefully this won't come back to bite us.

These same opinions come up every season and every time it needs to be explained why modern players have to be rotated compared to those that played 40 years ago.

Look what happened to Chris Willock when Beale was in charge. There is no argument or alternative opinion.

We're top of the table at home, why wouldn't we realistically get 3 points?
