As much as the team and squad have improved this year the manager, his tactics and general all round management has been another level. Best since Warnock for me. and still no song!

Also think having Bould alongside him on match days has made a big difference

Good call on Bould, and I'd add Betsy.

And JS is better than Warnock. Best since Gerry.

Agreed, he has been very good this season.

I think we won today in good part due to how he set up us, vs how they were set up.

All the players buy into his ideas, the standards he talks about a lot is one of the best things that has happened to us. We will win games because of those standards, and only playing players who live up to them. It's made this team very together - as has some great characters in it led by Jimmy Dunne who you can see has a great relationship with him also.

At Rennes he improved young players such as Ousamana Dembele, Camavinga, Jeremy Doku, Mathys Tel, Raphina and Desire Doue.Thats some list of names in their very young lives as football players. Being the son of a very successful French National Team Assistant manager too.

Realistically, am surprised his light shone so far under the radar of most and even many of our own fans, even today have reservations. I think his most important quality is he can really improve some players, almost beyond recognition.

Smyth, Adamson and Madsen are standouts in terms of improvement. Am hopeful that Dembele, Saito and Poku could do likewise. Mbengue has done well mostly and Kemper has been exactly what you want from a left back. Hopefully Burrell and Kone can keep fit and do likewise. Then you have someone like Alfie Lloyd who is definitely getting the most out of his abilities also.Another who I personally think he is managing well also is Kolli. Using tough love there and again think its the right call. Dunne and JCS also performing and Ronnie in some games is definitely the Rolls Royce. Appreciate Charles may well have done as well with anyone but Stephan is the one that has said to him, if you think you can pull off that long pass - do it and do it, he has.

Was another who was a bit depressed by the negativity after Birmingham. Yes the injuries have been bad, undoubtedly but there were a few very reactionary negative posts about us, once more finishing 15th and 16th.

Am expecting a few more, if we lose 4 nil to Southampton next weekend.

All though, I can say today is brilliant. Loved it today.

Bloke near me mentioned the 4 nil win inspired by Adel in his season and what an individual performance he gave that day. Today was all round briliiance.

Just occasionally being a QPR fan can be just damned fun !!

Probably too early to be thinking like that.

Julien impresses me more and more as time moves on. I loved the recent interview with Clive and Conor and I was thinking that Marty would not have given such detailed, interesting replies.

Julien gives the impression that he is a deep thinking football man. He stays humble, grounded and would no doubt chuckle to some of the responses on here to victories and defeats. As OakR says Julien sets standards, high standards, which can only be a positive thing for the club especially as the players seem to be buying in to it.

He is not perfect of course. I think he has finally realised that Smyth is better than Saito and the Boy Kemper substitution will never be forgotten, lol.

I have high hopes for what Julien can achieve at our club. But as my friend Colin recently said, Julien might get frustrated, fed up with player availability and move on.

He got right today, tactics wise.

Last week it was 5 at the back and one up front (Edwards did not play middle but actually was sweeper), with Adamson and Kemper as wingbacks. He got that all wrong and the team was overwhelmed in the middle and had no attack up front.

No more mistakes today. Youngsters, let me introduce to the Classic 4-4-2, played throughout the 80's and 90's and of the most classic kind.

Big man, little man up front, often played over the top for the little man to run onto, wingers crossing the ball (no cut backs) and when nothing is on the big man holding the ball up and flicking it on when we had to go long.

Requires the little man to run around like a maniac, check, requires the big man to hold the ball up and win headers, check.

Classic fullbacks running the flanks and central defenders crashing into the ball at corners. Midfielders tackling hard and creating two banks of four out of possession.

Simples!
Saint Holloway would be proud.

I think against Brum he tried to play the hybrid formation that was so effective and innovative at West Ham, but we got pushed back and Bailey missed Madson. What I like is he picks the team and adjusts it for the opponent. Swansea cam thinking they could just dominate and play a high line and we surprised them by switching Smyth in the middle and frankly we could of and should of score another 3

I don't know that he is even better than our last Manager Marti, who kept us in the Division when we looked highly likely to be relegated. But Stephan is certainly doing very well with what he has. I have wondered sometimes why we do not use Smyth's pace up front. Julien went with that yesterday with Smyth alongside the suddenly rejuvenated Kone and with the survivors of our injury decimated squad set up in 2 banks of 4 behind them, we were too good for the team who have topped the League the last month.

Where he is in the hierarchy of top managers is debatable.

What is not is he deserves a song.

A dozen games in, and the Nehru jacket remains in the wardrobe. He is just toying with the Championship.

Certainly some of the best footy since the Don Howe/ Gerry Francis era. Think Neil played some great stuff, but we were a class apart in the league that season and I doubt his team would have been as dominant in this league, right now.

Christ alive, Jools' has got Mben dawg, Tariq, Nico, Chair, and Buzz all out injured as well!

It's a joy to watch at times and I tell you what: I think Jools knows a player when he sees one!

Great post. Like many on here growing up on 4-4-2 and our great 90s team, that was part of why today was so enjoyable. Swans clearly having a bad day, but best defensive record coming into this and we looked like we could score every attack. So exciting to watch.

Sign of a top.manager who can play multiple formations and ways (compare with Russell Martin) and get best out of players. They all look to be enjoying themselves as much as us fans.

Yeah he said he could play different formations and tactics but maybe he just needed enough time with the players to get his ideas across.

Incidentally has anyone noticed how much better we are when he’s had time on the training pitch with them. It’s not just about being rested, we just look better across the board: passing, movement, patterns of play.

JS set the team formation up excellently and well done to him & his team. The Team, and you could easily talk about some very good individual performances, played very well indeed, some of the short passing in very tight situations was 'proper' and fair play to them, you could not do that if you were not full of confidence.

Swansea couldn't cope with our short tight passing , every time we did it they fell apart!

It certainly beats having just one tactic of knocking it long onto the head of Jimmy Dunne and trying to pick up the scraps. Desperate stuff. This guy is a proper manager and I said from fairly early on that we were lucky to have him.

He's come up with superb tactical set ups and executions against the top two sides in the league over the past couple of weeks. Let's see what he's got for Southampton...

Julien Stephan on 09:21 - Oct 25 with 281 viewsMyke

If the last two matches have taught us anything it’s that JS is not the worst manager in the history of Association Football nor is he the greatest. He is an honest, intelligent, hard-working manager who has grown into the job and gets it right more often than not. Of course when his team deliver a performance like yesterday, it rather creates a rod for JS’s back, because it rather negates the struggles of our ‘injury ravaged squad’ Speaking of which, imagine Chair instead of Vale and Burrell/Smyth or Poku/Smyth and there is plenty to be optimistic about. The trick as JS himself would say is to stay humble and not go intro extremes of depression or elation.
One thing that concerns me, am I right in thinking that yesterday was the first game JCS missed that wasn’t pre-planned? Worrying if so.

I'm in Bruges this weekend and rather miffed I missed the game. But managed to watch the second half on my mobile and even with a tiny screen you can see how well Stephan has set the team up. The shape and discipline is so good. He's an extremely savvy coach who's learnt this league and is showing his class.
