I was gutted when he left. Don't get me wrong, I still love Gino but in a straight shoot out Willo is the one for me.
Absolutely agree.
No contest.
His best game for us, I thought, was a 3-0 win at Everton. I think it was Bradley Allen's hat-trick game(?) Either way, I remember for definite that all the print journos gave Wilkins Man of the Match, but it was a complete travesty and us fans decided at the following match that the journos mustn't have got their elbows off the bar counter during the match. Because anyone that actually watched the game knew that Wilson had put on a show for the Gods.

Wilson was a superb left back, but never realised you were that young Brian!!! Gillard the best left back that I can recall. Nearly 500 appearances - absolutely mister consistency. Telling, that Currie mentioned him on more than one occasion in his interview with Clive

I remember some footage I used to love watching of a match in the early 90’s that was on one of the end of season videos or dvds. For some reason I have it in my head that it was against West Ham and that it was a evening game but I could be wrong on both counts. Clive does a fantastic bit of play on a break away and I think he runs over the ball in midfield fooling their midfielder and runs round in a big arch and collects the ball and it almost leads to a goal. Like I say I haven’t seen it in a long time and I can’t remember exactly what happened but the commentator gets very excited and it was just brilliant and I’d love to see it again!
I'm old enough to have watched both of them, Myke. I thought Gillard wad fantastic, but Clive Wison edges it for me. He was pure class. He was a converted midfielder, so always seemed very assured on the ball, with great decision making. Never seemed to panic or let pressure get to him; I'll never forget the last minute penalty to beat Millwall in the Cup.
Many people think our 96 relegation was down to losing Sir Les in 1995, but I think Willo leaving for Spurs (on a Free!) that same summer was also a huge factor. He went on to play for them another 4 seasons.
He would definitely be in my all-time R's XI.

That penalty OMG, but what about his left foot and passing and what seemed to me was his utter coolness when under pressure, the one player who when on the ball you could sit there-fold your arms and not worry. Those of you who didn't see him play live yes he was that good and you only realised it when he left.
My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

I'm 51, Myke.
I saw Gillard play in the early 70's and thereafter a few times on telly but I really don't remember him that well so I shouldn't compare him and Wilson.

Wilson the best I agree. We all loved Gillard though. Mark Dennis was a bit wild and wooly, to say the least but he was a good player if he didn't have a touch of the vapours.

Ah I had a fair idea of your age Brian. I was trying to be tongue in cheek (or should that be thumb in keyboard) as I knew that Gillard had played with us all the way up until 1982 Cup Final, but very hard to do humour on here. I accept that Wilson was a very cultured player, but Gillard was comfortable on the ball too in an era when defenders defended. He often sent Thomas away down the left hand side with a neat ball over the top or down the line. He was tough too, when Gillard tackled you, you knew about it. Kenny Sansom was a top player and Dennis could have been if he was managed, but it's Gillard for me.

Man, him and The Bard. What a privilege it was to watch them and Super Ray in the same team. Happy birthday, you little genius.

Mark Dennis was amazing but completely mental. He was above Kenny Samson, but due to his wild behaviour, Samson had a way better career and was also very useful for us as well. We shall never know how good Dennis could have been as he was too busy collecting red cards.
Wilson was truly a class LB who should have played for England. I remember Spurs fans saying "we have a left-back now", they could see his class instantly. What a team that was back in the day, Bards, Maddix, Macca, was Parker still there?
No wonder we were so hard to beat.

If he is 60, he was 34 when we let him go. Conventional wisdom would have been not to offer him more than a year but Gerry at Spurs would have known him well and would have worried less about the financial risk. Crazy to think we had him in a run of Gillard-Dawes-Dennis-Sansom-Wilson-Brevett, followed by Brazier-Heinola-Bruce-Warren-Murphy.
Apologies, Darlington in the middle of the latter who was better than the others put together.

This contributed to our relegation for me. We let Willo go, Bardsley was injured for practically the whole season and we had Ready and Challis at Full back. Wilkins messed up.

I remember that match very well. We played so well that night but their goalie Tony Parks was really good and some of our finishing was very lax. Probably the 2nd best 0-0 match I've ever seen. The best 0-0 match was the same season on Boxing Day against Liverpool. Should have been about 6 all but both Grobelaar and Stejskal gave goalkeeping masterclass performances.
Clive Wilson what a player!

That was the game we couldn't get in the home end and had to go in the west paddocks terrace which was away fans that day. Our only ever 0-0 v Liverpool.

Everton fans praised our overall performance but were particularly lavish about Wilson that day
He was probably a more skilful player than Gillard with the ball at his feet but for me Gillard just edges it overall through better tackling and overall physical attributes
