| Just back 19:11 - Jan 8 with 9462 views | BlackCrowe | Wow that was a laboured performance and we escaped by the skin of our teeth against a very solid and physical Rotherham side who must've felt a bit mugged at the end. Struggle to come up with many positives apart from excellent penalties from both teams. Stef was excellent in the first half but faded. Thomas out of his depth mostly - has the air of a headless Connor Washington, running around lots but the game passing him by. Didn't really like Gray's attitude either, forever berating his teams mates throughout the game whilst missing a couple of good chances himself. Someone needs to have a word. But we're through and West Brom lost, also had Added Time and a red card, so our confidence should be steady enough going into next Saturday's mega game. | |

One of Warbs many mantras, good teams find a way to win. Also did anyone else have a Sunderland deja vu moment with the goal? Looked to me like neither the ref or the lino had given it for what felt like ages. [Post edited 8 Jan 2022 19:21]

| Just back on 19:19 - Jan 8 with 4879 views | Lanhoop | Agreed. Rotherham did their job well, stopped us playing, rushed us into poor passes and panicky clearances. However, i thought Dunne and Thomas were our two best players in the first half. We were worse when Thomas went off and Amos and Dozzell didn't link play as well. as he had. | | | |
| Just back on 19:25 - Jan 8 with 4804 views | MedwayR | I thought Johansen had a poor game by his standards, whilst Thomas had a good first half then faded. Gray should've scored, poor finishing on a few occasions. Good to see Drewe make his debut and he did ok out of position on the left. | |

Although he did score a good pen, which was some redemption. Shout out would be for Luke Amos. When he came on I thought we upped our game.

Whilst I agree on both points, I thought Albert was probably one of the worst in the first half and although really positive second half, he still made a few mistakes. Was really hoping Thomas performed today and I thought he did quite well first half. Remember this is a guy that’s not played much and hardly started for us. I don’t think we can really be critical of that first half performance, he did well. Faded in the second but a lot worse than Thomas today. Not a great performance. We really didn’t look after the ball and surprised how often we went long. We’re going to really miss Chair and Willock (if he’s unavailable too).

I couldn't work our tactics out at all bypassing the midfield constantly trying get behind their defence. It didn't work once that I can think of and didn't look like working. Oh well 3 poor performances in a row and 3 wins!

| Just back on 21:03 - Jan 8 with 3895 views | terryb | Unlike the OP, I thought Johansen was the worst player on the pitch! Gray only just surpassed him though. Thomas was having to do the work of three players which may explain why he faded. I can't recall when I last saw us play this badly. Hopefully this will be the last time we attempt to play two upfront! Was Austin sitting in the Ellerslie Road stand a complaint about being taken off? He certainly should question why Gray stayed on instead of him. Also, was Odubajo injured again, Or was 30 minutes the most he could manage? | | | |

Yep, agreed. I think Warburton would probably agree with you too judging on his post match comments. As he said, we seemed to get dragged into playing Rotherham's game instead of playing ours. That we had neither Chair nor Willock to do their thing in the final third had a detrimental effect on our game. As you say, we're winning games so I suppose can't complain too much. I just hope we use today to work out how to play better next Saturday. WBA are Rotherham on steriods.

I can't figure out the Austin thing at all. At best it's really odd behaviour, at worst it's incredibly disrespectful. I'd imagine we'll find out more soon.

He bolted straight down the tunnel when he finally made his way over, having sat in the stand for around 20 odd minutes. Not the kind of behaviour you expect or want from a senior pro, and especially not when you have 3 youngsters sat on the bench watching on. I’m not sure why he was so moody, he was very poor and sadly looks an absolute shadow of his former self. Johansen though was even worse - how many times did he give the ball away? And Gray just had one of those days… Positives - Thomas had a good first 45. Albert a good second 45. But my word, that was a tough tough watch. Badly missed Chair and Willock. Looked like we had no quality at all and couldn’t keep possession of string any passing or moves together

"Johansen though was even worse - how many times did he give the ball away?" Johnasen's performance seems to have split the posters on here, 1JD. FWIW, I thought that his passing was erratic but that he still took up good positions and kept trying to get us forward. I thought that he was one of our better players, albeit that the bar was low today.

Luckily we had goal line technology or it wouldn’t have been given. The Lino was right in line with and still didn’t give it.I could see from behind the goal that it was over the line.It was more of a bolton moment than a sunderland one.

| Just back on 21:47 - Jan 8 with 3441 views | BklynRanger | I thought they all looked a bit disgruntled. Thomas and Ball looked like what they are to me - decent players who need a run of games to show their best. We've seen it with Dom in the past. Thomas will end up leaving us and, eventually, tearing it up for another championship club. If so so be it though. Albert was out of it first half but not for want of trying - none of the play seemed to go near him. Dozzell was quality on the actual ball when he came on but his passing got us into trouble more than a couple of times which is unusual. Moses is worth persevering with in that position I really think. He can track players and he's got a great vertical leap. His confidence seems to be at fault sometimes - looking to Barbet too much to know where he should be. | | | |

Why have you never been a fan of Austin? Our best centre forward of the last ten years IMO, despite having his best years behind him nowadays.

Clearly an excellent striker during his first spell with us. I just find it hard to warm to him, Ned. He's never done anything egregious but he's really not my cup of tea. And I'm wary of him.

| Just back on 22:16 - Jan 8 with 3192 views | strikerace | I wasn't there but I was watching on TV, and every time they showed Warbs I thought there was Austin on the bench behind him, bundled up in one of those big coats. In fact the commentators pointed out he was biting his nails at the end of extra time. | | | |
