Excluding 1966, which World Cup do you think was the greatest you ever watched/went to.
For me, I think it was 1998. First one I could watch in the pub, Michael Owens goal and Scotland failing to get out of the groups again.

loved the 1970 world cup.
being around about 12 at the time, collected all the sticker cards from all the world cup teams, so knew /recognised all the players throughout the tournament.
some late nights there.
i think the first match of the tournament was a boring 0-0 between mexico and russia.
but the rest was magic, including englands little run to qf, we all know what happened there.

Poll: how many games this season....home/away.

82 . No question. Full stadiums. Northern Ireland beating Spain.
And Brazil the greatest attacking team ever to lace boots!

Definitely 1970.The first one in colour on tv.The great Brazil team that won it.Gordon Bank’s save from Pele. The 4th Brazilian goal in the final. And me being only 9 years old, without a care in the world, and only a couple of months away from my first ever qpr game.
Closely followed by 1990 and 1978.

1970 probably, but 1974 was special as well. Apart from the final!

The Netherlands team was the best national side that I've seen, combining the talents of two of the three top club teams in the world. Bayern being the other one. Hungary in 1954 may have been better, but I missed the pleasure of seeing them.

Like many a top team though, the Dutch side were lacking a world class goalkeeper, but 2-11 were superb.

I don’t think not having a great keeper ever stopped Brazil from winning a few world cups. And imagine being told that you’re playing in goal in the great Brazil sides from 1958 onwards?

No they didn't have a standout 'keeper, but Gilmar & Felix were better than good.

The Dutch goalkeeper (Jongblood?) didn't lose them the World Cup, that was due to their arrogance, but having Maier in goal definitely helped West Germany.

90 for me too.

We were on a French school trip in a bar when Platt scored that goal against Belgium and when we cheered the locals all went 'Shhhhhhh'. Good Times.

I was home for the Semi but that whole tournament had a great vibe.

90 was a pretty dire tournament truth be told. England were mostly awful until the semi, but had probably the two best games of the tournament in the quarters and semis, so it's got a better rep than it deserves. 86 was fantastic - unbelievable goals all over the place. Denmark could've won it too, until they imploded against Spain.

Bare bones.

'90 for me, too, but just because of my age.

I was 20 and was supporting Ireland and England. And everyone was partying. England fell in love with football again, and Ireland was still in its first love froom '88. I was in London and it was every night. Every. Night.

As you say Antti, a lot of the games were poor. But no-one gave a damn. No one.

The Dutch did have a very good keeper in 1974 in Piet Schrijvers but unfortunately for the Dutch he was injured. Jongbloed had played just one international twelve years previously and was an unlikely choice. An equivalent scenario would have been one cap Phil Parkes being selected for the 1986 World Cup. Mind you, Big Phil probably wouldn't have been outjumped by Maradona...

I will always have a soft spot for the 1974 World Cup as it was the first I properly remember and it had the brilliant Dutch team, still one of my favourite teams ever. However, for pure entertainment it has to be 1982. Any World Cup that has two brilliant matches like Italy Vs Brazil and France Vs West Germany has got to be pretty special. The 1982 Brazilians are up there with the 1974 Dutch as great nearly men.

1990 WAS dire. Still holds the record for lowest goals per game of any World Cup finals tournament. It was the nadir of the backpass to the keeper which a year later forced a law change.

The knockout games were mostly a procession of teams playing for penalties particularly a dreadful Argentina team. It will however probably be the best chance in my lifetime ( I was 1 in 1966) of England lifting the big one as awaiting in the final was - even with Maradona - probably the worst ever Argentina team. One of the few bright spots was the Cameroon team who probably should have made the semis.

People's memories of it are clouded by Nessun Dorma, England doing well and Gazza's tears.

1990 - great tournament!

Personally I had the most totally incredible summer leading up to my first period away travelling. Arguably 1990 was also my best year too.

Spot on. 1986 was much better. Maradona, France-Brazil, Russia shooting from anywhere, the rebirth of English football (what a relief after Heysel and Bradford), brilliant Danes until their shocking collapse against Spain. 1970 the best though.

As an Irishman, I'm conflicted. I'm naturally drawn to 1990, as we got to a quarter final, played brilliantly in that match, but lost it 1-0 to a ricochet from Toto Schillachi.

However, my heart says 1982. That final should have been between France and Brazil. Both were superb sides who have left a lifelong impression on me.

Best game was Italy v Brazil in 1982. Pretty good world cup too. England decided to take two unfit players who were thrown on in desparation as we exited the tournament.

I liked 2002, especially the Korea home games and constant crowd noise. 2010 was awful with those stupid vuvuzelas constantly droning.

86 was spoilt by the cheat winning it. 90 started terribly, then became utterly brilliant (some of those nights watching England games were epic...) and ended with crushing disappointment and one of the dullest finals ever. Was in Ibiza in a hotel largely full of Germans by the time of the final (flew out just after losing the semi) and they just applauded when they scored the winning goal. Remember feeling it was totally wasted on them. Later that night a group of maybe 40 celebrating Germans decided it might be a good idea to march up the main drag in San Antonio chanting. A far larger number of English came out of the bars and blocked the street. A tense stand off ensued with the local police ready to start cracking heads if it kicked off while me and then girlfriend looked on and planned our escape if required. The Germans saw sense and turned back.

98 promised so much but again was a sickener. The Owen goal was an amazing moment but then of course the red card (wonder what VAR would do with that now?) and the pub I was in going mental after Campbell headed in what looked like the winner and I seemed to be the only one that realised it had been disallowed. Bergkamp doing Argentina a few days later did improve the mood.

Honourable mention to 78 as the first one I watched and was allowed to stay up for. Again slightly spoilt by Argentina winning against that fantastic Dutch team.

The penalty shootout v Romania, folklore. Wasn't at all confident O'Leary would score! Had chances v Italy but once they scored it was over.

Felt Ireland had a geunine chance in 94 and Pat Bonner, who I never really trusted, made an awful error against Holland to end hopes. The game v Italy was superb but was followed by the absolute stitch up of having to play Mexico at midday in Florida.

I was in Airlie Beach for the that final having just got back from a Whitsunday's tour. I had managed to convince 6 German's who were also on our tour, to cheer for England. They had no idea what was going on but we were all so pissed by the end of it. Great night.

FIFA World Cup's it has to be Mexico 86 for me. The first one I was old enough to have taken an interest in. I remember watching the Brazil v France match, probably one of the best Wolrd Cup games ever. Then there was Belguim v USSR, crazy. The Danes were awesome but somehow ran out of steam very quickly. You have to say it was won by the best player the world has ever seen even though he cheated England. And to cap it all off, even the final was a belter.

I think the World Cup died a bit after 1990 when they awarded the 94 one to the US. That's when it's commercial value became the priority.
