Really like the idea of some pragmatism. I love Rangers' number tens and our famous style but having watched that garbage yesterday, I'm looking forward to getting some players in who love a tackle and get stuck in, rather than wave a heel vaguely in the direction of the opposition.

Cracking stuff. I knew very little about him before tonight but thanks to everyone on this board, I feel I know a bit more.

I still don't know what to expect in terms of formation or style, but then I had no idea either when Howe, Francis etc were appointed.

I'm looking forward to finding out.

Great piece as ever Norf.
I'm actually more excited about this appointment than I was about beale.
The fact that he's actually been there and done it, coupled with the fact he is coming into a nucleus of talented youngsters like field, willock, chair, dunne etc means that he is better prepared for the task at hand. Granted he's got his work cut out, but the blackpool sides of the last few seasons have been hardworking, grafting and disciplined. Slightly concerned that he hasn't flirted with the creativity aspect of the midfield, but hopefully we will allow him to progress that part of the game.
Really pleasing appointment. We just need to stop feeling sorry for ourselves and get on with the job at hand.

Fingers crossed for him. If he can get the players actually pressing, tackling, throwing their bodies in the way and being prepared to get hurt defending then I'll be delighted.

Exactly we have to all stop thinking about Beale, he's history, Critchley is a good appointment with existing Championship experience, you would expect to pay money for a manager of his level so circumstances means we have lucked out after being shafted.
Was shocked to hear about Jimmy Dunne getting the abuse and having to delete his Instagram, the question is why, he gives a 100% on the pitch and has been a good club man so far......?

Very interesting on the McNamara backstory which seemed so odd at the time.

On paper a really good appointment, I really don't know if he'll clear off if another job comes his way but, he's with us now and hopefully he will get us up and running again.
As for Dunne getting abused, some people are just complete idiots, I doubt they'd say anything to his face.

Excellent piece, with a hell of a lot of research in there.

Juts for old times sake re Sky and 'manipulating markets' , Sky sold SkyBet to Flutter Entertainment - parent company of BetFair and Paddy Power. I believe Flutter pay Sky a licensing fee to use the branding and those irritating Jeff Stelling adverts, but that's it, Sky have no stake in Sky Bet.

So like, trying to brand QPR as somehow racist a few years back, I think the Ainsworth thing was just rank bad journalism.

So Beale managed to wind just about everybody up. In hindsight it's not a surprise.

Optimistic about this appointment. Great record at Blackpool and we could be better off that Critch has scratched the itch of working in the Premier League, even as a #2.

I’ve got no problem if we switch to a formation of two up top with a strategy of ‘Carlton, hit Les’. We gotta get the substance of results back on track before we start worrying about our style. Who cares about playing with false 1’s, double pivots, sprinkling of plies, and a magic man, if we are losing matches?

Don’t sound the ‘sign a striker’ klaxon but we can’t ignore that we would be better placed to have some additional resource upfront. Dykes must start, with support from Roberts, Armstrong and Bonne (in that order) However, that isn’t enough quality at Championship level and it is a failure of recruitment that we have allowed this happen, whilst having seven Centre Mids in the squad that could feasibly start.

Roberts is normally played as a forward/winger, instead of a CF, Bonne is clearly not good enough/interested, and Armstrong is rawer than eating an undercooked steak whilst watching WWE on a Monday night. I’m not saying we should spend on a loan fee for someone like Cameron Archer, but a cheaper loan or lower league gamble might be worth a go. I would even swap Kelman in the squad ahead of Armstrong or Bonne.

What's this 'UEFA Elite Coaching Badge' I've been seen written alongside Critchley and who are the other 15 in the group?

Ahh, I found the answer. It's not a UEFA Elite coaching badge but an English FA coaching badge. There are only 16 members in that club because the course was disbanded after those 16 members graduated.

Edit: And for those that do not want to read the article, the other 15 managers are mainly still youth team managers in England.

But Washington, Bonne, Dykes, Kelman … These were all lower league gambles (you know what I mean with Dykes). We already make lower league gambles on strikers. It's not an issue of poor strategy there. It's that other clubs' lower league gambles paid off and ours haven't.

Isn't that an example of poor strategy in itself? To be fair, though, Dykes is something like equal 15th in the Championship top scorers count at the moment, and Orient are loving having Charlie Kelman, so mayne there's still hope.

My point was about an imbalance of quality and quantity in CM compared to CF.

The clubs, transfer fees, wages, and gamble factor for Field, Johansen, Amos, Iroegbunam, Richards and Dozzell (Chair is the other I think can play CM), are distinctly different to Dykes, Armstrong, and Bonne (I see Roberts as a FW/Winger with Willock, Thomas, Adomah, and Shodipo).

Seems to be slightly scattergun in regard to type of signing we make and where we sign players from.

At this point the board have seemingly got us the best available within our price range, can't really ask much more than that from them. He looks a decent enough match on paper for us, so will be in Scotland taking over from the Pot Bellied Pig impersonator by Easter if he follows a similar path.

Genuinely though happy with this appointment as I would have been in the summer if we'd made it then.

Never knowingly understood

It's all about the money, money, money.

We cannot afford to pay big money for a striker. Therefore we have to gamble. A few will come off (Piroe at Swansea) but most won't.

Thanks for that in-depth analysis, very interesting.

I think he is the right man for the job, but I am also delighted that he comes with two other experienced coaches. Hopefully, a real brains trust

Those strikers have one thing in common...they are from lower leagues in the UK. Maybe we need to start looking abroad more.
