Please, on this day, grant me this one piece of long winded half pissed happy clappery.

Gareth:

Promotion specialist ✅
Low budget experienced ✅
Got a tune out of a demoralised / belligerent QPR squad ✅

Obviously two wins on the bounce helps, but I genuinely think he is more than a pair of cowboy boots.

He’s capable, if the board and the fans let him, of getting this club on course for a Luton / Millwall type revival.

I have to admit I was all for the Warburtons, Critchleys, Beales, Dozzells, Amos’s, Carrolls, and Gosses at the time they signed but now I really think the route to salvation lies in dogged football league personalities, albeit those we make ourselves and those who are young and hungry enough.

This is Gareth’s bread and butter.

Recent history tells us that our best spells come when we embrace the football league pool talent / mentality and eschew premier league acadamiëkïndër.

Some may get sold in the summer, bur we already have a hard core of Dickie, Dunne, Kakay, Field, and Dykes who’ve all got their faults, aren’t in most cases technically the best, but give a fck and have 100+ football league games under their belts.

The spirit of Holloway and Warnock lives on.

Nice sentiments, and congratulations. Bit of a tactical blunder having the wedding in the football season though!

Carry that into and through next season, and that's 107 points!

More than enough to guarantee 16th place.

Congrats to you and yours Baz
I'm going to take the line that GA may be the right man for the right time stance
The club certainly needs that.... at the moment we are spiralling out of control and GA just might be the man to stop that and put us back onto some sort path.
But like everyone one of us he as limitations and o don't think he is tactically astute enough to take us upwards, but to steady us, then yes I would say we should trust him
We have to see where this goes next season, and if we are all honest, it will take us quite a few next seasons to sort this out.
My worry is behind the scenes and the powers to be.... how long can those keep dipping into their pockets subsidising it

Sorry mate, it was a cheesy drunken reference to a quote from The Godfather about special days and everyone being in a good mood. I don’t have a daughter!

Agree we should be cautious, and that he is limited, but I think this is the market we are in now.

With caution should come patience and I agree that his biggest peril is the board.

All we need to do is maintain Championship status and be competitive and I think Gareth can do this. He has to build a more physical/industrial team to cope as it is apparent we look a bit soft. Still he has done well to get a tune out of this bunch when it mattered, but I am personally not bothered who goes or stays as they are the reason we landed in this position, by sulking.

That's not a bad view Bazza, and good for you for expressing it. However, I have two major concerns both of which stem from Ains style of football.

The first is, after a number of years of possession and passing based football the whole club embraced, Ains' direct approach is a huge change. Watching the B team v Hull last week, it was clear they were struggling to play direct football just as the first team have until recently. If Ains stays true to type, it will take a long time to change the club style.

Secondly, again if AIns is true to type, will fans stay with it in the long term? The present doesn't feel the same as the Holloway period when we knew the club was fighting for its life, or the Warnock period when we had the pleasure of players like Tarbs and Faurlin to watch - I don't expect our ball players to be with us next season. It's not that I expect rope-a-dope football all next season, but I do worry Ains' football will wear very thin on supporters.

Ains will bring good stuff too, such as a hugely valuable culture change within the club, but if he persists with his direct style, that could be his downfall.

I've always noticed that some managers and clubs just fit, the manager will have success then move on and it not work out. I could be describing Gaz at Wycombe but recent results suggest that maybe he's a good fit for us.

Hopefully with the changes in the summer the squad will be more motivated and Gaz will have the summer to get his points across to them.

Can't fault Ainsworth's passion

Watching him today he really does kick every ball and challenges every decision

He will at least give the team some backbone if nothing else and make us harder to play against

Instead of writing off next season as relegation bound hoof ball , why not see who we sell , who we buy and crucially how we play and start next season before rushing to judgement.

I have more problems with routine sh'thousery than the style of play TBH ,

There's two types of long ball.
There's getting it up quickly and pressing aggressively from the front. There's also sitting in, soaking pressure, not having the ball then going long for counter attacks.

We tried the first and consistently got caught out and conceded tons of goals. We've gone to the second (albeit in the extreme) and have got the job done.

If you have players like Faurlin/Helguson/Taarabt then the first option is great as you move up the field quickly and accurately with proper weapons in the final 3rd.
If you're trying to do it with Dozzel/Martin/Adomah it isn't quyite the same

The Don also said…

I have a sentimental weakness for my children. And I spoil them as you can see. They talk when they should listen…

I’ve said previously, we’d avoid relegation before the last day and that we shouldn’t forget the awful performances we’ve seen this season. Don’t let let two good results make you think we’ve turned a corner.

As much as I have enjoyed the victories - beating the best team in the league and seeing Uncle Albert score the goal to keep us up - this team has been awful. They’ve done the bare minimum to stay in this league.

I’ll back Wild Thing but he has to be allowed to build a team.

I really like GA. He got energy, enthusiasm and a love for this club, and he gave up a lot to come over to us and gamble his managerial reputation.

He came in and, somehow, got us out of the shït.

The football has been terrible… but, I’m hoping that was out of necessity rather than his preferred way of playing. 20% possession is not what I want to see moving forward.

He’s earnt his opportunity to build, and I hope he manages to blend his style with some ball playing, rather that hoof ball.

I thoufht I had seen some of the worse shitehousery last season when 3 of Bournemouth's defenders all went down in the box holding their heads. Each of those 3 were in different areas of their own penalty box after our attack.

Yesterday I think 4 of ours went down holding their heads in our box even though it was amongst a huge Grand National type tumble and Stoke had a half arsed Ben Pearson in their team whose only major contribution was to slide off the pitch and into the advertising hoardings.

WE got the job done by fair and slightly unfair means.

I trust GA to take us forward and try and build a 'dynasty' but hope we dont become a vile and despised club for dark arts.

captains fantastic

Whatever the style of football, however hard it is to watch, the first aim has to be creating a side that is far harder to play against.

We can’t afford players with pace and flowing football is a non starter without pace. We had a good go at it, 30 games last season, 15 this, to their credit largely defying reality but eventually it falls on its face.

Hopefully GA is the man who can find a bank of seven who don’t buckle. What you can afford to put it front of that can come later.

Got to give him a chance , see what happens, it can’t get much worse. Whether he’ll be undermined by the usual suspects and their connections remains to be seen.
