BSA C15 followed by a fair number of other bikes including two Ariel 4G's (a British forerunner to 5G ;-) ) but once a family was on the way the Suzuki 750 GT M had to make way for a 850cc Mini with the standard Series A engine and pudding bowl gearbox. The only interesting car I have owned was my Hillman Avenger Tiger GT.

The grass is always greener.

first moped Suzuki AP50 then Suzuki GT250 then passed test ( in the days when you just had to ride around the block without falling off and not knock down the examiner enroute) to GS400 then got Austin Maxi (what a beast of a car nothing fancy but went on for years)

My first car too, bosh. I bought if from my then girlfriend’s uncle who owned The Loftus Road Garage. He had previously driven it and blinged the engine and exhaust like nobody’s business- it flew and was far too much for a boy of my age. Anyway, he took it in for a service, smashed it up on a nostalgia drive and ended up sticking an 850 cc engine back in. B’stard.

lada samara.

Some of the doors had this strange facility where you could actually, like, open them?

Mind you, on a recent trip off island in a beat up old vw estate, on the way back i got pulled by customs.

"Open the bonnet". So i start effing about with pliers. Sighs. "Ok, open the boot". "Again, might take some time". The Heath-robinson cord and pulley thing i'd rigged? Cord had snapped. More sighs. Go to open passenger-side rear door. "Nah! The one on my side works though!". More sighs, get mirror, check underside of car and wave me through!

White(ish) VW Beetle with floors so rusty that when I drove in rainy weather, it became a paddling pool inside. Loved that car.

1975 Austin Allegro, purchased in 1978 for £845!
1.1. Litre transverse engine, front wheel drive, with a square (technically quartic) steering wheel. Hydragas suspension that had to be repumped every few years. Some good ideas horribly assembled.

The window seals were so bad that the floor had pre-drilled drainage holes and rubber covers.

But loved that car and kept it until 1985.

I had an Austin Princess 2.2 HLS, a much maligned car but I liked it. Gas suspension, interior like a Gentlemen’s Club, engine smooth as silk. Not very reliable or quick though.

The OP mentions cycling I used to cycle to LR and chain the bike to the railings opposite SA Rd entrance. No problems at all.

Me too. Lovely car. Loved the gear stick coming out of the dashboard which you get aggressive with. Another (in my view) charming feature was that, at speeds over anything around 40, the passenger door would fall off, so whoever was with you needed to cling on to it. Happy days, the days when men were men and women were women etc, and QPR were so fk g fabulous it was untrue.

I got married and she refused to go in it. A dismal and utterly anonymous Alfa Romeo followed. Sigh.

Silver 1988 Rover 213 bought in 1993. Quite nice inside but a bit gutless. Sold it within a year for a profit!

Don't think having a car and bike are mutually exclusive, I have both and use the bike a lot more than the car - if the journey's a reasonable distance and I can carry what I need the bike's a no brainer in London.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

Wolseley 6/90, 1956/7 model, bought in 1971, paid £15 I think, it was a wreck, and not exactly the 'man about town' motor, got from A-B for about 6 months then even the scrap yard wanted money to take it in.

Had so many after that, usually cheap and cheerful but if they passed the m.o.t good enough for me, one exception was when I got in 1987 a white XR2 ,insurance costs were crippling for the young man I bought it from,he had really looked after it and like a brand new car, I loved it, bit like driving the mini's I owned for nipping around but with a pair of bollox, rather than my usual rust heaps.

Ever since just the usual family types.

My first was an Austin Allegro 1300. I was pushing my dad to get me a VW Golf or Peugeot 205. He wisely ignored my rambling and bought a lump of a car I had to learn to service if I wanted to use it. He also had cunningly realised it was unlikely to get up sufficient speed or show even slightest turn of acceleration for it to be used in boy racer territory.

It was an appalling built car. Interior front window heating direction automatically switched to cold and dropped to downwards to feet every time I went over a bump, which I times meant spraying the inside window of the car with de-icer. It drank a pint of oil every week and proceeded to happily evaporate in a random manner in occasional bangs and puffs of oil smoke. Body work fell off from time to time, because, well it was an Allegro, its what they did. The rear bench seat had been reattached using a piece of 4 by 2 by a previous owner, this was probably best described as a temporary measure, which came loose over anything beyond a perfectly smooth road. It also had a stereo installed with a mind of its own which when it wasnt chewing up my favourite cassettes, would hi-speed projectile vomit them into the back seat when you lightly pressed eject.

I remember a particularly enjoyable trip down West End Road in Rusilip heading towards the A40 when the road was slightly bumpy in a particularly cold and frosty December evening. We hit what might generously be described as a slight bump just at the point where you go through RAF Notholt runway where there is no lighting. The meager heating stopped and the car was suddenly filled with ice cold air. The window started to freeze on the inside and my mate knowing the routine started to spray the front windscreen from the inside. A moment later the rear seat spar collapsed spilling two surprised mates all over the rear of the car, whilst trying to recover from de-icer fumes. I then tried to restore order by switching off the music, triggering the temperamental cassette eject hitting him with a low flying cassette as he was flailing around in the dark, as we came out back into the light it was like someone had dropped an octopus from a tree into a blender with bodies all over the place.

Basically I learned to drive in a bloody clown car. All in all a perfect car to learn in for a couple of years .

Never knowingly understood
