Looks a good signing (for next season). Can see him at 10, with Morgan dropping in to replace Field. Or vice versa.

Slowly building a very young, technical team.

Ah, great analysis, thanks.
I now feel like the kid who unwraps the present that looks like it's the right size to be just what I wanted - and found that it's something completely unwanted!
I'll get over it, hopefully he will. Not convinced we should ever go back to the shop he came from, mind.

*I was going to extend the metaphor say that hopefully I'll end up happily playing with the new toy, but it just sounds waaaaay too pervy.

Do we have details on his current injury? Same injury he had at Hull or something different?

Sounds like we are building a team around one position at times when what we really need is a striker that can finish and a couple of defenders on the flanks.

I’m all for flair and whining but unless we score and stop conceding these players are somewhat of a luxury regardless of cost/value etc

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Of all the players to make this complaint about, the lad who's played all 11 positions on the pitch is an odd one.

The oddest thing was the late announcement for a player that is injured.

Still good to see youngsters wanting to join us.

I quite like a risky recruit me. Clearly got the technical ability that Marti would like a bit more of in the team. We're gathering a core of younger players comfortable on the ball and they're ours, not loans. Nice.

If he's played over 40 games at left back for Barton in League 1 you'd assume he's not the soft academy boy type. Captaining the England U19's to tournament success must mean some natural leadership skills and at the minimum points to a good attitude on and off the pitch. Marvellous.

If, big If, he isn't ongoingly injury prone, there's every chance he develops nicely here, pushes us on and/or gets sold for a nice profit. Super.

I like to look at it that we're doing our Summer business nice and early!

Ps thanks Clive and Greg, great thoughts and rundown.

I suppose if he never recovers from the injury and doesn't play for us we can say Vale Vale when he retires.

I can think of two possible reasons for the late announcement, but would question if either should have applied.

1) Deciding if the injury was one that would have a long term effect & whether he could be nursed to be ready for next season. This makes sense to me, but surely didn't need to wait until the last seconds.

2) Avoid having to pay him until February has arrived. Again, this could have been achieved prior to 23.00 last night!

Without knowing much (anything) about Harvey Vale, for some unknown reason, this was the transfer that I wanted to happen. But then, signing Jordan Cousins excited me!

Anyone know what the injury actually is / was? Or is that something else we're not allowed to know?

Well, I’m all for flexibility but we really need a left back that can defend and a right back too. The club itself openly admitted to the LB problem.

Our loaned RB option isn’t up to the job and both of our currently contracted LB/RB options (Paal and Dunne) are out of contract in the summer when Vale (in theory) becomes fit again.

Assuming we release Colback and Fox (more cover for LB) in the summer, either you need to nail Vale into one position or we will need to find someone else.

If he’s happy to do that and can defend to the right level then fine but I don’t get the impression that’s his forte.

If he’s going to play further forward, who’s he going to replace when a very expensive option is warming the bench most weeks already and Dembele is coming back soon.

Add in the Brazilian player and it’s not a particularly obvious choice of acquisition to me but I’m just a simple fan that knows jackshit about systems, formations and inverted full backs etc.

So, whilst I don’t really get the Jack of all trades/master of none approach - I’d be very happy to be proven stupid/wrong if it works out.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Any recruit direct from Chelsea must be quarantined in a converted shed on the outskirts of Heathrow for a minimum of 4 months.

Been in place for a while but we didn't get a chance to try the shed out until now.

Yes but the difference is unlike last summer we've got a settled GK plus back up, we've got several striking options (I don't think we could say that before about Kolli and Lloyd). We've got a decent number of CBs but may need one more to replace Edwards. Our CM is much stronger with Varane and Morgan to add to Field and Colback. We've got Dembele instead of Willock.

Last summer it was hard to think what was more essential. This summer fullbacks are essential but apart from that it's strengthening/back up rather than complete overhaul.

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but he sounds little like Marc Pugh and how we deployed him in 19/20.

But rather than being run on diesel, he's like a hybrid or EV.

I liked Pugh for what it's worth.

I realise that we're not allowed to know details of the contract but if we take it at face value that it's a Free Transfer with bonuses only to be paid when certain conditions are met then it seems a reasonable punt.
If Vale is plagued by injury then we are unlikely to have to pay out any of the bonuses (appearances, International call ups, goals etc.) except maybe the promotion to the Premier League one.

Thanks Chaps - Good info there.

Signing an injured player who is out for the rest of the season is just so QPR.

Please never change my wonderful club!!

Its a bit of a strange deal in that, from what I've read, Chelsea seemed to be negotiating hard for a high % sell on for a player who as far as I understand is out of contract in the summer and injured for the rest of the season. Why didn't we get him to sign a pre-contract and wait to get this done in the summer?

Domestic clubs can't agree a contract in January. Only clubs from abroad - e.g. BOS to Turkey.

Also his age means it would have been a tribunal, not a free.
