Cricket 2021 09:04 - Jun 2 with 26147 viewstoboboly

Starts today with England v NZ at Lords.

Finishes with us raising the urn in Oz. Gorgeous day for it, anyone get tix? After having loads of games sorted last year I thought it prudent not to bother this season.

Will be listening to TMS, just hope they have anyone in place of Daniel Norcross whom aggravates me something chronic.

Would I have liked England to bat for a win yes of course but with 4 Batsmen on a pair against a well balanced experienced attack unless England got off to an absolute flier was very unlikely especially with no Stokes and Buttler(Though sense if they had been in the line up Williamson wouldn't have been quite so keen to declare)
Sibley is in the team to wear the bowling down and not have Root basically opening which since Strauss and Cook departed the scene has not been uncommon. The balance of the team is very tricky when Stokes is unavailable because if England pick Leach as spinner and Anderson and Broad then the Number 8 better be useful with the bat as we are heading back to horror days of Gussie Fraser at Number 8 with Malcolm Mullally and Tufnell to follow(shivers at this recollection)

Agree, I thought the criticism from TMS/Highlights was all a bit over the top. Two sessions to get 273 is difficult, then you add in the pitch that most had struggled on and it makes it very difficult.

Also you have a lot of inexperienced batsman, some already playing for their careers. If Sibley wafted at a wide one and was out for 5 he would have been massacred by the pundits and press. I think it was the right call, get some more experience out in the middle and treat it like a net session and get some more overs into NZ legs with a quick turnaround to the next game and the long summer ahead.

This. I listened to the TMS podcast, and I thought Agnew and Vaughan were well out of order when speaking to Root. Our batting is so fragile, and without Stokes, Butler, a Curran, archer, there is no way we would’ve chased that

I had a sneaky nostalgic affection for England batting out the declaration to a stale draw. It brings back memories of when I first got into Test match cricket and most games seemed to be slow draws. It made the results even more significant. For example 6 Ashes tests in Oz in 1971 only had two results with the last one taking up a six day test! Then after the blood and thunder of Botham's Ashes we had a 1-0 loss in India played over 6 tests. Life has certainly sped up... Or 1968 when England won 1-0 in the West Indies over 5 tests only after Sobers made a "rash" declaration.

Tests in Pakistan often had less than 200 runs scored in a day in the 70s, and the players routinely going off early because it was a surprise when it got dark. Mudassar Nazar was the king of the six-hour 55 not out.

This is the one I remember. Mudassar 52 not out as opener at the end of Day 1 out of 164/2 on the way to a century!

Back to 2021, England's turn to make the bowlers suffer. 52/0 off 21, no Kane WIlliamson. Their longest opening stand in the first innings of a home test since 2009, which is pretty shocking.

Good session for us, can't ask for much more than that in the first session of a test. But how great is it to hear a decent sized crowd?

Think Crawley may be lucky to get another test this summer. With Buttler, Stokes and Bairstow returning it is hard to see him retaining his place. Seems to have been found out.

Was looking at the side just now and it really looks a bit light on batting at the moment. Agree that Crawley needs a big score in the next innings to retain his place in the squad later in the year. Just doesn't look convincing at this level yet.

Never knowingly understood

Real shame that Foakes just happens to get injured when he could have given Buttler a run for his money in the side with two good test matches. All seems a bit early for Bracey.

NZ bowlers have variety and they are well disciplined. And thats without Southee and Jamieson.

England's batting is really fragile. Even Burns and Lawrence who got most of the runs were streaky. The return of Bairstow, Buttler and Stokes can't come soon enough.

And yet Bairstow and Buttler haven't been blowing anyone away is tests for a while now.

Bairstow Test Average 2019 - 18.55
2021 - 23.85

Buttler has been better but has just the one century and 3 50's in his last 12 tests. Admittedly he is down the order.

I'm following the game on cricinfo. The pitch maps they're showing for the bowlers...not exactly Glenn McGrath!

Wood out, up to Broad to shepherd Lawrence to his century. Only kidding.

Regarding Mudassar Nazar's innings I just had to add two facts. First, it was watched by a crowd of 50,000. Second a certain G Boycott then scored 63 at an even slower strike rate!

Very odd not to go with a spinner.

Need a bit of luck somewhere to get a wicket.

Am I missing something here? They have two rabbits batting and we’re dishing up balls for them to get 4’s from. Can we not just bowl at the 3 wooden bits at either end of the pitch and see if they can keep them out?
In a low scoring game every run is vital.
