What a story this is.

She had to go through three qualifying matches to make the main draw, and she’s now in the US Open final without dropping a single set.

Let’s hope she wins it.

When I was the manager of my daughter’s U14 football team we have a player that was head and shoulders above everyone else in my team, and the league too.She later went on to be picked for the England girls football team. She was also the 8th best ranked British girls tennis player, and being only a year older than Emma, she might’ve followed the same career path, but I heard she lost interest in tennis and concentrated on football instead.Oh to be good at one sport let alone two.
Not a bad paycheque for 3 weeks work though is it?

Katie Taylor has represented the Rep of Ireland at football at all levels and is probably the best female boxer in history. Luckily she persevered with the Boxing more than the football.

Amidst the fawning orgasms of the press hailing a 'British' winner, I note with interest that she was born in Canada to a Romanian father and Chinese mother. A truly international talent.

Ffs, why do so many question her nationality. Who cares where her parents are from or where she was born. She's lived in England since she was 2 and has a British passport. TBF, I couldn't give a fish's tit what nationality she is, just appreciate what she has done and what an amazing talent she is

Young, pretty, talented, personable, athletic What's not to like.
And British to boot.
Her background is irrelevant. To me, but, clearly, not everybody.

She identifies as British and has been in the UK basically her whole life, certainly the part of it she will remember any of. Born in Canada, made in England.

She's incredibly refreshing compared to the droning, boring media trained older players you often see, so I hope they don't try to change her. Her singing along to Sweet Caroline after the match summed her up and was just a perfect moment.

Australia just had table tennis players at the Paralympics who represented (and I think won medals for) China at the last paralympics and I didn't see anyone here complaining.

As for the media, if they aren't allowed to get excited by what Raducanu has just done, which is absolutely ridiculous and unprecedented, in a country that has only rarely tasted grand slam success, then what's the point of anything? She didn't even lose a bloody set over 10 matches including qualifying ffs.

I thought her comments on 9/11 did seem a bit staged. When she said oh! 1 more thing, it came across to me as oh! I nearly forgot to say my prepared statement my agent has given me.

It was a great match though, Emma's progress and the way she's come across throughout was amazing to watch.

Bit hard to comment much on 9/11 when you weren't even born when it happened.

Hey steady on. Not suggesting for a moment she isn't 'British'. It's the narrow nationalism of the press that I find disturbing. Same with the Olympics - all the coverage about the 'Team Gb' and comparatively little about some of the world's best athletes if they happen to be Chinese. The US media are the worst offenders, but the BBC is close behind.

You want to see this in full flow? Come watch an olympics in Australia sometime, its nauseating. The internet/VPNs have saved me from having to rely on their dreadful coverage any more, but when I first lived here it was unbearable.

I suspect every country does this to some extent, bar those who don't have many medal contenders.

That's a fair point. We do get a bit carried away with this kind of thing. Sometimes you'd think people who represent other nations aren't of mixed origins. Which of course they are.

Exactly. We had a long jumper here a few years ago, born in the UK, British parents as far as I can remember, trained here, educated here, sounded British etc. But she had married an Italian guy and now lived there. She represented Italy, her new home. I thought that was absolutely fine. Good for her for choosing the country that she wanted to represent, and where she now lived and worked.

It works both ways.

Jo Konta, also. Born in Australia, of Hungarian parents. Didn't come to Britain until she was twelve, when her parents settled here. Didn't get a British passport until she was in her twenties. But she felt British more than Australian because she grew up here in her formative years. Again, fair enough.

Emma would probably feel weird representing Romania or China, two countries where she's never even lived, or Canada, when she left there at two, and when she speaks with a British accent, grew up here, and learnt her tennis here.

My father was born and raised in Guyana. He came over to the UK to fight in the 2nd world war. He brought up his family in the UK and lived here for the following 82 years. Could he not claim to be British, or should I have had to represent Guyana, a country I've never visited?

Obviously, people should have some connection with the country they're chosen to represent, either through parents, living there for a certain number of years, etc. But then, that's it, we should shut up about it.

And as for other countries being less partisan than us, you just have to watch cricket and listen to the Indian, South African or Australian commentators to know that they're completely biased too.

If you watch Wimbledon, they often put other nationalities on the main BBC channel if they're more well known than the Brit who's playing at the same time, and you have to watch online to see the British player. I know, because I follow tennis as well, and know a number of the young Brits, hence having heard of Raducanu well before this year's Wimbledon.

The constant bashing of the BBC drives me mad. It's too biased. It's not biased enough. It's too left wing. It's too conservative. It's clearly come from a social media and MSM campaign for years from vested interests like certain Governments in the UK who don't like being held to account, or satellite TV conglomerates, whose business interests it suits to have a weak national broadcaster. Or even other countries with vested interests in seeing a weaker GB.

If you really want the equivalent TV version of the Sun or the Daily Mail, keep bashing it, because that's what we'll end up with if other broadcasters no longer have to keep up their standards to rival the BBC's relative impartiality. Of course it's not perfect. Of course it's flawed. But if other channels had the same level of scrutiny, I'm sure we'd find out how flawed they are too.

The tabloid press is a bit different though, because of the way they make a player go from hero to zero in a matter of weeks, just to sell their crappy rags (Ben Stokes springs to mind). I'd quite happily see all of them go to the wall.

I love having a biased QPR commentary. I don't want to hear long discussions about how wonderful that West Brom player is, or what Fulham needs to do to get back in the game against us. Because I'm a QPR fan. I feel the same about British players, I want to hear about and support them more than other countries' players and teams. And I think that's just normal.

Un - believable !!!!
- as I once heard a tv commentator say.

Impressive on all levels.

1.She is only 18, skill levels already through the roof.

2.Being quite a slight frame - her power is intense.

3.Concentration and focus on the key points.

4.Ability to deal with a crowd clearly on the side of her opponent.

5.Very smiling nature and very attractive young woman to boot - sure there be many young guys wishing and hoping.

6.Incredible composure and very very confident ie the speech afterwards so natural, so intelligent, so lovely. - Andy Murray take note . Lol...

She reminds me of Jess Ennis in her prime but Jess was not at this level until she was at least in her mid 20's which makes all this even more outstanding

Nix. 100% agree with you, as I seem to do on a lot of your observations.

I seen Raducanu in a mixed Battle of the Brits type thing they did in lockdown, enclosed camp somewhere in England where all British tennis players split into 2 teams and played singles, doubles etc over a week.
Emma was up against Andy Murray in a mixed doubles and she peppered him with powerful returns and really gave him a hard time.
Murray wasn't long into his recovery from hip replacement but you could tell he was surprised and he got a lot of good banter from the sidelines (mostly Dan Evans I think) about being given a run around by the 17yr old. It was first I'd heard of her and up till she reappearedcat Wimbledon I'd wondered where she had gone, away to improve her game is the obvious answer!

On your point of wanting biased commentary, it was great to hear the pundit for the Austria v Scotland match saying 'Cmon Lyndon SMASH IT IN!!!` before his penalty.
For too long Scotland Internationals have an English commentator, always fair and not derogatory, and Davie bloody Provan who is the most negative arsehole you could ever wish to hear. We can be crap but we can also be good, give us a bit of passion when we're good for God's sake, surely it will help their viewing figures?

Hell yes Karl. I loved listening to the Scottish commentary team. I've been watching Scotland more than usual to cheer Lyndon on and it was great to hear them being so behind the team. Otherwise what's the point?

I'm also on a tennis forum and honestly they're so knowledgeable, I think they've probably played at a decent level, know LTA and coaches etc. Apparently Emma won a national junior tournament just after her 13th birthday, when you had to be at least 13 to enter. Interestingly, though, despite having talent, she didn't stand way above her peers, many of whom have fallen away. So there's a lot about drive, determination, application, having the right team and coaches at a young age.

Dan Evans and Andy are both great supporters of younger British players. I go to the local Surbiton tournament near me which attracts a decent level of player as it's just before Wimbledon and on grass and Dan often goes and cheers on the younger Brits and hangs out with them, when he's not actually playing himself.

You’d have to be incredibly naive to not think her looks will make a huge difference to her earnings. Just look at the earnings of Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic and especially Anna Kournikova (who actually won very few tennis titles).

Nothing at all wrong with stating she is attractive but this article seems to avoid this obvious factor.

I’ve got nothing to add on Raducanu, but I was amazed to read about Joe Salisbury (me neither). He’s a 29-year-old Londoner, who peaked at 559 in the men’s singles rankings, but who won the men’s and mixed doubles titles last week for a tidy £300,000. He added them to his French mixed doubles and Wimbledon runners up this year, and the 2020 Australian men’s doubles (runner up in 2021). Six grand slam finals within two years, won 4. Late developer…

Those of a certain vintage (OK Old People) will remember South African Zola Budd and how quickly she got a UK Passport thanks to Conservative Home Secretary Leon Brittan. All for a chance to win at the Olympics.

There are plenty of examples of true foreigners flying under the British flag of sporting convenience without picking on Raducanu.

Whether it was staged or not please remember that Fernandez is only 19. Personally I thought it was a classy touch given she'd just lost a major final.

As for Emma, first class and a credit to her parents, regardless of where they hail from.

Right or wrong, good looks sell, especially female good looks. For all the talk of treating women on who they are rather than what they look like, major advertising still focuses hugely on attractive women. Raducanu has the looks and personality to be a big target for marketers and sponsors. How she and her team manage this will be key.

Kournikova is a great example as she never won a slam yet always had huge publicity and to be fair didn't mind playing up to it. You could argue that it actually hindered her playing career, as she was a top 5 player early on but never won a singles slam. Funnily enough she did do quite well in doubles tournaments, maybe because of the reduced attention those get?

Raducanu seems very level headed and well managed. Hopefully that continues under what is going to be a much bigger spotlight. She has huge potential to win many tournaments in the future.
