I know Southgate did a good job when he initially came in by dropping the likes of Rooney and bringing youth through, but he’s a very negative playing manager.
We’ve had two dream draws and paths the last two tournaments. We definitely had the players in the Euro’s, but the negativity of the manager stopped us winning it. We definitely have the players to win this World Cup, but I’d say negativity will be our undoing again.
If Gareth Southgate was the Germany manager in the 2014 World Cup, Germany would’ve lost that semi final vs Brazil 2-1.

I don't get the “If we’d thrown attacking players on the pitch, really had a go at them we would have won our first major tournament since 66” and I don't agree that "It's Southgate that's held us back". These views just don’t stand up to scrutiny. Has the history of England and its Football team not taught people anything? The English Team that lost in the semi-finals had no divine right to be a world cup finalist, it was a pretty ordinary team with Eric Dier, Trippier, Dele Ali, Lingard etc. I could sit on that radio station and make the case for Italia 90 being a missed opportunity — we struggled through the group despite having one of the best midfielders this country has ever produced, a striker whose stats can live with the best of them, two wingers that had it all and the best of the lot, Paul Fcking Parker. The same goes for Euro 96, a home tournament where we were a Uri Geller inspired penalty miss and a linesman flag away from it being considered a failure. The point being tournament football is about getting the job done. So many teams go out when you don’t expect it, they just can’t handle it, yet Southgate has delivered regularly and has made us a real force. We’ve not lost in 90 minutes in two tournaments now, with our only defeat coming in extra time. His record is good. We can criticise the strength of the opposition but let’s also praise him when his tactical decisions reap rewards — Germany in the euros and the switch in formation was brave and a key reason why we deservedly won that game.
The only point I do think is valid and what another poster flagged is some of Southgate’s in game management could be better. In both the Croatia and Italy games when the opposition started taking control of the game, Southgate isn’t as proactive as I would like and his subs are quite robotic and predictable, regardless of how the game is going. He could have been more creative/bold in both games. But the overall view of the Manager has to be a positive one, he’s delivered regularly at tournaments and brought the feel-good factor back to the Team. Just look what’s gone before, there’s no comparison.

Wasn’t a Southgate fan at first but he he has done a superb job imo Has everyone forgotten how bad Woy was ? That old dinosaur had 3 tournaments and we absolutely garbage in all of them , one of the worst England managers playing some of the worst football since Taylor was hoisted upon us Yes I agree that Southgate should of changed things quicker in the Croatia and Italy games but he got us there and that’s what counts , the bloke has given us the 2 best summers of football since dear old Bobby Robson
And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot
That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles

There is no doubt he is a class manager and human being but can he push the right buttons to win the World Cup . One massive question raised by the video above is the reason England did not win the Euros. I think its universally agreed that England could have overpowered Italy and gone up 2 or 3 in the first half. Who pulled in the reins ,Southgate or the players retreating into a defensive shell that allowed Italy to pull level and win the shootout. England have the talent to cut through teams but will Southgate go for that I suspect no

Italy let in 3 goals in 6 games in the tournament prior to the final including one game which went to extra time. Didn't concede more than 1 goal in any game. I'm not having that at all that we could have "overpowered them and gone 2 or 3 up" like it's a given. They are an incredibly hard side to break down and always have been it's literally their DNA.
I'd rather we had shown more intent in the game but to assume that would have meant we'd have scored another 2 or 3 goals with no additional risk is a bit much.

Should add to this a few weeks back on Sky Rory Jennings was among those youtubers picking a world cup squad for England, he left out the likes of Sterling and Phillips who have been our star men in the last 18 months but took Mount who has been pretty poor, As has been said like most on talksport he is going it for a reaction and it generally works for him

Christ lads. Try following the Republic of Ireland at the moment. I'd sooner sandpaper my eyeballs than watch that dreadful performance against Armenia . You were a couple of penos away from a major championship win . One defeat in 24 odd games. You have a gem in Southgate.
Luke Shaw absolutely smashed it during the Euro’s and so did Saka, which has given him the confidence go on play well in the league. Makes a change to see players really wanting to represent their country. England have served up some serious dross over the years, but Southgate has seemed to inspire a team to massively overachieve.

Funny this has been posted on here. Rory’s actually Godfather to my lad. I’ll send this on to him. Sadly he does support that lot despite being a Kilburn boy. Many of us have tried for years to convert him telling him that being from Kilburn he should be Rangers.

Ok that is it , I am not driving to the city to watch QPR in next years play off with you now . Italy were shellshocked after Shaw scored and a second goal would have been enough to win it IMO. I realize Italy had those 2 incredible Dinosores Chillini and Bonuchi but they lack pace and should have been exposed . Nobody knows if the players pulled back a bit or Southgate tried to make that 1 goal stand up. Either way its a glorious chance wasted

Yeah,, I said to my son that we urgently needed a 2nd goal before half time while we were on the up and Kane was unplayable, Mancini would clearly change things at half time. To try and hold on for 88 mins+ was just too much and so it proved. The goal, although coming, was fortunate. It came off the foot of the post and could have gone anywhere. Just happened to land at the foot of Bonucci.
Attack is the best form of defence but there's also a danger of exposing yourself, however, parking the bus invites continual pressure .... what to do. Chiellini and Bonucci made up for lack of pace with experience, same with Dunne in the play off final. it's not that easy against vastly experienced players, especially those two who knew exactly what to do.

I think most people saw 2018 as an over achievement despite the disappointment of a semi we really should have won. Even if we had, I don't think we would have been able to match that French team.
We should have won the Euros against what is no more than an average Italian team who will now go 12 years without playing in a world cup. We were conservative but only conceded two goals in the whole tournament. The free kick v Denmark and the jammy six yard box pinball effort Italy scored in the final. Then we were the wrong side of the penalty lottery away from winning it.
Once you get to the pointy end of tournaments, its usually small moments that decide things and you need a bit of luck. The secret is getting there more often so one day it falls your way. All the most successful nations have also suffered crushing defeats at the back end of competitions.
We could be more attacking, but how much does that leave us open at the back, its an age old problem and not alien to ourselves in recent times. Southgate seems like a great bloke and a fantastic ambassador, but as a coach or tactician?
There's a lot of exciting young talent coming through for England and you'd like to see someone get the best out of them. I'd love to see where someone like Klopp might be able to take them.

Agree we should have gone at their two old men more. A yellow or two early doors and things get tricky for them. We were dreadful second half and faded like in the Croatia semi final but Italy still needed a jammy goal to get to extra time.

Yes, it was a very disappointing result but it's effectively a friendly. Friendly's are there for this precise reason.... try out ideas, systems, players etc. Better this happens now than in a tournament. Not sayin any tournament won't be trouble free but the games are there to sort it out. person ally i don't think we should even be having these games, gives the players a break.
But yes, let's sack the Manager.....

A bit of a Mickey mouse tournament when players would rather be golfing in Dubai or whatever at the end of the season.
England's formation has been around for a while so coaches know what to do against them.
It is close to a WC so if I was a coach I would not want to give too much away at this stage tactically. Next WC going to be very odd in that heat etc,
I would not be too worried and the bloke has earned the right to have another crack- and will obviously stepping down after anyway.

I think it's pretty disgraceful the players are being asked to play these games at this time of year, and have no real problem with them taking it easy, what with the season about 5-6 weeks away and a World Cup coming up. I know they'll go on tour etc with clubs next month, but there shouldn't be any games now.
As for Gareth, he's a done a fabulous job, great results in two tournaments and to hell with the caveats. He deserves to take them to this World Cup. He may be too defensive, but otherwise I don't have many complaints. The perennial fan complaint of: 'favourites' is a nonsense - every manager has players they prefer. Even the very best.
Bare bones.

tell me this - who is there better to replace him. Someone who might actually want the job, and is available?
that's not a long list is it.
Disappointing as it is, its the first "bad" match under Southgate in a long time, and it was a glorified friendly at the end of the season. aren't we going a bit over board?

1st bad match since they also lost to Hungary about a week ago.
