Four days strike action in Aug and Sept. We should really get behind them on this issue.
They are an integral part of all our lives and, I feel, somewhat taken for granted.
Give them a good pay rise to show how much we appreciate them.

I did some temping for the Post-office in 1997? In the old W11 by Colvile school.

They sent me and this chap out to do a walk with everyone's mail in Lancaster Road and surrounds, luckily for them I grew up round there as the numbering was a bit odd and was taking ages the other guy wanted to dump the mail and go back, I told him no we were going to deliver it and we did.

It did make me think though how much gets dumped by temps and that was 25 years ago! Be grateful if you have a regular postie.

Some people here are paid peanuts relative to the Americans who are paid peanuts - So not sure what your point is there. America also has Unions, so again, I'm not entirely sure what your point is.

I disagree, I think the strong employment laws come from democracy, not unions. If it was up to Unions, I would be down the pit.

I don't want to go back and forth all day, happy to disagree on this

All I'll say is unions have been important to workers in this country. Fine if you see them as an orginsation that would want you to work in a pit but they have helped bring in multiple things we take for granted that have improved our lives like sick pay, paid leave, maternity leave etc that is far better than you'd get in America and in many other countires which is why i was making the comparison.

I don’t work in Royal Mail any more, but I guess the workforce has been cut to the bone already, and the only posties left will be delivery staff or people to empty the machines once the letters have been automatically read by machines. So how would modernise it any more?
Do you think that we should all collect our own post from the delivery office,or have bigger rounds for the existing delivery posties?
Answers on a postcard please.

There are still people required to sort all the mail received from abroad which the machines cannot read because they are so poorly addressed even human beings struggle to recognise the actual address. Then throw in just how many missorts the wonderful machines make these have to be corrected by a human being at some point.
The super duper all singing all dancing Parcel Hub at Warrington is currently sending 15 Containers of work a day to Slough DO of which 14 Containers are incorrect. Sadly the collecting your own post is probably the route Royal Mail's management are going for long term so much more cost effective than paying someone to deliver it

I used to work on the TPO and we opened bags with direct letter bundles for Sheffield postcodes that contained lots of misread letters with SS postcodes, including loads of credit card bills addressed to Southend. These were machine read letters, which would to go all the way to sheffield and then come back again.
I guess the machines now aren’t much better 20 years later.

Good luck to the posties.

This is going to go 12 pages, and you're all going to think the same as you thought at the start.

When Postman Pat was mentioned it got me thinking about his new special delivery service (those with young children will know what I'm talking about) , that certainly wasn't what I was thinking at the start.

To be honest, most people here are in agreement - even people with very different opinions in other areas.

The exception is your mate, who clearly *yet again* has nothing better to do than spend the afternoon telling grown men with families and responsibilities that they don't understand the world, and if they disagree with him they're middle class elitists.

Spare us the both sides stuff.

Oi, don't get arsy with me, I've already said I'm on the bloody posties' side. Good luck to them and anybody else trying to fight for a better deal for them and their families in this total fcking shtstorm.

a casual post worker in our office back in the 90's called wayne was sacked after one week for putting the letters down one of the streets drains.
one of the residents phoned up our office and reported him whilst still watching him through her window.

he's still remembered as wayne the drain.

And all I'm saying is if we always listened to the Unions, I would be digging coal out of the ground in a town like Barnsley or Worksop. Sometimes the Unions are just wrong. Sometimes they protect jobs that it's not in all our best interests to protect.

20 years later and people get their credit card bills sent directly to their email address, no tree cutting or diesel vans required.

Maybe if people were still digging coal out of the ground in Barnsley and Wakefield we wouldn't be in this mess with the energy companies holding us to ransom

Some do and some don’t.I was just highlighting how bad the machines were 20 years ago,and the wasted miles a lot of post travelled.
Don’t judge everyone by what you are able to do with modern technology. There are still some of us dinosaurs still that get more excited by the posties footsteps than a ping of an email.

Fair enough, just say that from the get-go. The fact remains that the actual need for postmen to deliver post is dwindling, and fast.

But every postal address in the country needs a postie,so you’re wrong on that score.Loads of people get their medicines through the post now, myself included, and that number is increasing all the time.

Really? So how does Dominoes deliver their Pizza? Do they have to ring up the local postie?

Shoehorning anti immigration, pro Thatcherite policies, climate politics, and defending Labour exploitation all into a nice post about posties is as impressive as it is malicious.

Yes because Coal and Steel was unprofitable to make in this country so the Rhetoric goes. Hmm you might need a little lesson in history which considering your background is South Yorkshire is a sad indictment of the education system in this country. Rather than support the industries of this country she chose to pay extra to import coal from Poland so unlike Germany where the Government actually charged subsidies on imported goods to make their own industries competitive she chose to actually compete against her own people and their businesses for a Political point

I've always wandered about letters/parcels that are mis-labelled. That is, not mislabelled by the sender in their own writing but by an automated system that seems to think a post code belongs somewhere else. The address I am in for the next week has a post code for the complex yet when companies type in that post code to find an address and then auto-label their letters, it comes up with a different address. I had a SIM card sent to the wrong address because of this and then had to wait three days before I could use my phone owing to the mess. Also, we are moving to an address with a DA postcode. Although it is in the London Borough of Bexley, the automated system on many occasions thinks we are in Kent (yes, we were many years ago). So, how can the auto-sort machines at the POs work out if a letter is actually going to the right place when what I believe is the RM's system is telling them different? I am sure I am not the only who has had this problem.

Yet another headache that has been created for the poor posties.

What's malicious is this thing on here where you get abuse for stating obvious facts, which are based on common sense and backed up by evidence.

Soviet Union-style political correctness. It's a shame because I agree with most of the Libs of LFW when it comes to most QPR related stuff.

What is your actual point? That 50 thousand vans idling all day is sustainable? That we need to pay postmen the same as doctors because Postman Pat (Long since discredited by the woke crowd) is popular on German kids TV? Cos it seems like you're just ranting without making any actual points.

I made the point, to support British workers and that the right has no answers as per usual, they lack true leadership and sustainable answers. Just more "don't care" and "I am okay".

And then had to pay them dole money because they couldn’t find a job anywhere else.So instead of collecting taxes for a fair days work, she had to use tax payers money to pay them to sit idle.

They aren’t facts and they aren’t obvious.

And you need to make up your mind, are we the liberal elite or hard line communists?
