Coming to the end of a long holiday in the scorching Kerry sunshine, my mind turned to Euro-hits of yore. Who’s the greatest? Baccarat, Ottawan, Black Box, Sabrina? My money’s on this sophisticated chap, clearly a man who knows what he likes.

In 1985 my best mate and I were living in a squat in Clapham Manor Street. His girlfriend's father owned this tiny little house in a medieval village in the South of France, about 50k from Montpellier. One night, just after we'd finished watching Dallas on our portable black and white TV, he stormed into the squat, raving about the mayor repossessing his house because it was falling down, and his builder had fecked off with the cash and left it. At this point my mate piped up and said, 'well, why don't we do it?'
To this day I am incredulous that he took us up on the offer. Neither of us had any building experience whatsoever. Nevertheless, three days later we were speeding down the autoroute with this crazy character, high on coke, ranting about Cathars and the Holy Grail. The village was on a hilltop, surrounded by vineyards, totally gorgeous place. It had two bars, the young men's bar and the old men's bar. Needless to say, we frequented the young men's bar nightly, drinking pastis with the local lads and playing pinball. And the song that they kept playing on the jukebox was Tarzan boy.
We had an amazing time, so thanks for bringing back the memories. We nearly destroyed his house though...

Euro is both a geographical and musical genre; to qualify a record must be by an artist or production outfit from continental Europe, it should be uptempo and cheesy. A Euro banger fulfils all of the above and despite its inherent cheesiness, should be admirable or enjoyable on some level, however twisted.
