That said, seems incredible that holding a shirt like that could result in a chap of Dunne’s size and proportions being brought to ground like that.
Yes he’s had the shirt pulled and a pen could easily have been awarded. However, it looked to me then and now, that upon realising his shirt was being pulled, our Jimmy looked to ‘maximise’ the opportunity.
Can't agree with that. It's not a tug, he's yanked the whole shirt, that's his whole body being stopped from moving. Dunne's size actually exacerbated it if anything. He didn't realise he was being pulled until in full flight!
Bare bones.

I'm still saying that next year's shirts should have a perforated tear-off strip construction.

Well first off, how did Swansea manage to lose that?!
I think the critical difference is, in this case, the defender gets hold of a piece of the player, whereas in our case, the Cardiff player gets hold of a piece of the shirt.
Didn’t Pinner Paul allude to this ruling a few weeks back?
I sort of get it. there’s something about the shirt pulling that has grey areas. Should a six foot plus bloke running forward have enough impetus to drag the shirt puller with him rather than fall backwards himself. You could say shirt pulling shouldn’t go on anyway, but I can recall a period when refs were giving defenders too much support, free kicks against at virtually every corner which, whilst correct, was spoiling the enjoyment of the game far too much.
There’s something about penalties for me that robs from the beauty of the game. Encouragement to dive, to feign tackles, to wreck otherwise good games. Was I happy Armstrong got a penalty from a brave run in the reverse game, yes. Did I think it was a penalty, No. Did I think it was a sending off, No. Was I happy about the penalty going in and us going on to win, Yes, but was I happy to go along with the eulogising over the demolition of a ‘shit Cardiff team’ in the manner it was achieved, No I wasn’t actually.
I’ll take it on the basis the opposite will happen to us at some point, but if we’d won 2-0, 11 v 11 I’d had come out of LR with far more satisfaction.
It was a penalty quite obviously but seen them not given almost every week. Matt Smith had his shirt ripped off once and not given, can't remeber the game but there was one the other week where a players shirt was ripped off and he had to run back to defend in his sports bra, nothing given.

We can debate this until the cows come home.
For me, JD hasn’t got enough momentum on him. His a few steps in, their defender has caught the shirt, but for JD to be felled like that, just a bit too theatrical for me. That said, a penalty could/should have been awarded.
Compare it to this
The fella is at speed and carries on.
Of course given the decision shown in the RvS game above, then it’s a shame we didn’t have that ref officiating as I’m sure he’d have given it.

Wigan Sheff Utd, that was a joke as well. Referees quite happy to make themselves look absolutely fcking stupid.

For me both the Reading and Dunne ones were penalties.
Far too much of this sort of stuff(I sound like Father Ted) is allowed.

I think all three are penalties - Wigan Sheff Utd one as well. What makes it more annoying is we've got to sit there this season while they delay every corner to have a big long performative chat with the crowd in the box, before letting them do whatever they like anyway.

Because they are?
Not stupid per se, but professionally stupid.
As with parenting and effective management, the key thing is CONSISTENCY not just personally, but collectively (with the other parent or with other managers). The moment that is lost is the moment the "kids" will stop doing what they should.
You get that with rugby refs, not with football refs.

I'm certainly in agreement re the nonsence of the "chats". The same with the lecture to 'keepers before penalties are taken. Taking this to an extreme, perhaps they should lecture the throw in taker to keep his feet on/behind the line & the permitted throwing action!
Just let them take the corner/free kick & penalise the offender, be it a forward or defender. If you must, inform both sides pre match that this will be the proceedure (although I can't see why you should need to).
Of course, it won't happen & would need Webb to give permission!
It would take a strong official to carry this out, but it would surely be following the laws of the game

Excellent points re the warnings Terry.
Lecturing the wall at ceremonial free kicks around the box another example.
Generally accepted that its pointless having long pre match chats with either the teams or the captains because
a) You just put your self in a corner before you even start and b) They won't listen/remember a word you say in any case
Paul, you're supposed to be having a few days off - you just said that to Clive!

I know it's been done now and im splitting hairs a bit but that pulling of the shirt is no where near what Dunne received. For a start Dunne comes from a standing position then moves while the defender has his shirt.plus from the rugby video the defender/offender is also in motion whereas the defender grabing Dunne uses players in front of him as leverage. I don't think Dunne put on on theatrics. The only thing I think goes against him was whether the flight of the ball gave reason for the ref to think he wasn't getting anywhere near it maybe?

Watch the Reading one, the referee isn't even looking at the flight of the ball, doesn't care where it is, looking straight at the incident (as was Stroud) and penalised immediately.

Yeh agree, flight of the ball should be irrelevant and its not Strouds call to make at that point. Its a foul on a player. It's another wrong decision by Stroud. We move on.

Totally agree terryb. The players are supposed to know the laws of the game, it's their profession!
The penalty one is ridiculous, it does nothing to help the taker.

See my post on the match report thread, that's a pen, but drop ball and Tim caution correct as was most of the routine stuff - matters little if you get a, in this case, THE, KMI (Key Match Incident) wrong.
