I was at the home game where Gerry picked up his back injury. From my dodgy memory it was 1977. He flicked the ball over Arsenal defender Willie Young's head and volleyed the ball in to the net, a wonderful Gazza v Scotland type goal.
As he was striking the ball Young simply threw himself at Gerry who went down immediately and after some treatment went off. Gerry was out for weeks and when he came back he was not the same player. He never fully recovered from that injury and didn't play for England again. |
He missed a lot of the 76/77 season due to his back injury.
IMO his back injury started when Mills crashed into his back at Portman Road in October(?) 1975. I don't doubt that there were other times that the injury was aggravated. |  | | |

I’ve unsuccessfully tried to find some more details on Gerry’s back injury because I remember from the time that Ranger’s drop in form after the brilliant 1975-76 season coincided with Gerry not being available for selection. I’ve always thought that Gerry was the most important player in 1975-76 and felt that if he hadn’t been injured we would have been a really top club, challenging for the title, for several more seasons.
All I can see is that Gerry made 11 League appearances in 76-77 but the Arsenal game at home (12 March 1977 when, as you say, he scored) was the 25th league game of the season – so something seems to have happened to him well before that match. He also only starts being listed as a goal-scorer around February/March 1977 suggesting he was making a comeback just before the Arsenal game.
I have a very vague recollection that he injured his back in a pre-season game in the summer of 1976, landing on his back on a hard pitch somewhere or other – but I may well be wrong. Someone out there must know? |

Seeing Gerry again and that brilliant speech he gave at half time made me think - let's not wait till he shuffles off this mortal coil before we have some more appreciation of Gerry. It was nice to see him voted as Legend of the Loft.
Some of the stick he got towards his second spell as manager hopefully didn't tarnish the memories. Nor too some of the stuff floated about that his first spell wasn't all that and was actually all down to Don Howe - (hello Dave Mc!) - in my book we don't have many England captains and the team under him in the 90s, for people like me born few years too late for the 75/76 side - the best we have seen.

It was very poignant to see Dave Thomas with his guide dog. To me seeing Thomas storming down the wing in full flight (god he could motor!) was as enjoyable as watching Stanley drifting past defenders as if they weren't there.
What a wonderful team that was. Gordon Jago (still alive and well) deserves most of the credit for creating that team. Sexton just added some expensive ballast. Gordon gave us Bowles, Givens and Thomas for £300K, and we only got Thomas due to Martyn Busby's tragedy.

Yes, Dave Thomas flying down the left wing, attacking the Loft end, socks rolled down is one of my top memories of that team. We had season tickets in the South Africa Road stand, near the half way line, roughly where the chairman's box is today. Brilliant memories. | | | |

When I was a kid I wanted to be Dave Thomas. I played on the wing and rolled my socks down to be just like him. Got really annoyed when teachers started telling me I had to roll them back up to keep my shin pads in place!
On the old qprnet.com I had the username Dave Thomas's socks. My son laughs at me because I often complain about wingers cutting inside so often, but I just yearn for the days of our Dave blasting past full backs and opening up great swathes of the pitch for Stan, Gerry, Don Givens, et al to do their stuff.
I remember being on a caravan holiday in Pagham when I read in the paper that we had sold him. Can remember my heart sinking to the floor.

Stan’s recent passing has certainly brought up a lot of emotions from across the QPR family and I’ve been wondering why it stirs such emotions. I guess everyone has a different level of attachment to the great man - people that met him, have a story about him, watched that great team - none of the above for me.
For me, it’s simply that he is the player that crystallised placing QPR on the map. Marsh dragged QPR up the divisions onto a bigger stage; but it was Stan that took to that stage and moved it on a level still - making QPR the connoisseur’s choice of football team. The swagger, the rebel, the creativity - the spirit that Stan brought to the blue and white hoops.
Because of Stan, I’ve been privileged to have had this basket case of a club to follow and unite around with generations of family, friends and acquaintances over 35 years and spanning five decades. If it wasn’t for Stan, QPR would simply not be the big little club that it is.

I'm pretty sure Gerry did his back injury whilst playing for England in a World Cup qualifier in June 1976 on a bumpy, rock hard pitch in Finland. That was the last time he played for England.
He didn't play for Rangers until the February 1977 of the following season. |  |

Just posted above. It was I'm pretty certain in the WCQ in Helsinki in June 1976 on a very hard, bumpy, uneven pitch. That was his last appearance for England. [Post edited 11 Mar 15:49]
