In real time I never saw the hand ball, it was only when it was analysed that I saw it... I thought it was a load of Bo!!ocks, but seeing the way Frey celebrated I wonder if he thought it was going to be chalked off
Frey probably felt it brush his arm. To be honest, I thought the ref was going to give Luton a free kick for a slight push from Frey on the defender. Just about the only decision the ref gave us all night.
Extra mature cheddar......a simple cheese for a simple man
It's a difficult one. Technically by the rule book his arms are within his outline or whatever it is. It would have been handball had he caught it, but he dropped it and kicked it in. He was actually waiting to see if the ref or anyone had spotted the push so I think he was slightly surprised it was given but he did the professional thing, he put it in the net anyway.

I think the rule now is if the scorer handles it isn't a goal.

Yes that's right. VAR would have ruled it out in the Premiership. Fortunately the officials missed it but a good finish from such a tight angle.
I am shocked we actually won. I didn't think we would win five in a row at home, I didn't think we would beat Luton three times and I was sure Luton wouldn't lose 10 in a row away and we would be charitable ending their poor away record. Mind you some of our finishing was charitable as we should have scored more.

True. I was very much in the 1-1 camp this evening but they are getting good at 'grinding these results out' and with some flair too. At least we are creating the chances we are missing at the moment. If it wasn't for their keeper and the post a few times that would have been more. But yes, 5 in a row from QPR is always some sort of force against the predictable ones where we throw things away.

Agree with all this and good to see us looking assured at home although I am a bit troubled by recent away performances.
The frustration for me tonight was our chances spurned. Luton can go home feeling that the first goal was handball and the winner was a fluke when we had enough good opportunities to have won comfortably. We could easily have not scored but luckily we got the breaks for both goals. We didn't put the game to bed and they really should have made it 2-2 at the end with the free header.
I really don’t see a problem with Frey’s goal but it seems modern football is a game where the authorities try to do everything they can to stop goals being scored.

Hopefully Edwards is given another few months to get it right after such torrid luck.
I don't see how that could be handball under any interpretation of the rules, old or new. But if it is, then that's the Watford away penalty evening itself out. I watched their games against Sheffield United and they should have been given a pen for handball but weren't, so now all is right in the universe. Top six I'm not bothered about this season, but finishing above Watford would be a decent achievement.
Handball was unintentional, which apparently doesn't matter but it also caused the ball to fly up when it might have been easier if it hadn't.
As for a foul on the defender, I didn't think so, but you do expect the ref to favour the defender. He was consistent on that allowing Morris to hold down Dunne when heading at the back post, luckily Nardi saved.

The new rule is that if the ball touches the attckers arm in thr build.up to a goal, intentional or not, then it should NOT be a goal.
Therefore, we got lucky.
It was the deftest of touches. So much so, the defenders, officials and away fans didn’t complain. It’s a daft rule, not everything is black or white. As said, it seems virtually impossible to score a legitimate goal these days with everyone desperate to find a reason to disallow them.
This is why i enjoy watching youth football. Refs let stuff like that slide because they don’t want to be stopping the game every 30 seconds. They like to keep the game flowing and as long as its genuinely accidental, which 99% of the time it is, then everyone just gets on with it. Really does happen both ways so there’s never really any one team being favoured.
Whislt it may have brushed his arm in the challange at the back stick, how about that absolute inch-perfect, first time pass down the line to set Smyth on his way in the build-up. Ball played into him, back to goal and to find your man first time like that is top centre forward play, many would have overhit hit. Not just a Frey-train bulldozer, he can play a bit too.
Nothing he could do about it. It comes off the defender's shoulder first and then it's just physics, man. Great finish though.
Reminds me of one of Clive Allen's goals against Cambridge a billion years ago.

Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. He runs like a cheetah, his crosses couldn't be sweeter. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore.

It was a great move to gut from the back, two to three passes which then sprung Smyth away. Reminded me of a goal that Jay Simpson scored against Reading during that period under Magilton when the club’s name was changed to Queens Park Rangers Four.

As the old saying goes " the laws an ass ". Now I know he didn,t actually score the goal but if Joelinton handball in the build up to one of Newcastles goals is not a handball then I have no idea what is and isn,t handball , a bit like most of the refs
Hi not read all but re Frey goal and handball as defender was in front of him he had no time to adjust and as ball literally hits him and rolls down his arm what could he do? Var would rule it out but we don’t use it, we may have got lucky but you play the whistle and no Luton objected ! And if it upsets Luton even sweeter !
This is why VAR and technology is killing - has killed - football.
It's this thing called - drum roll, drum roll - luck. Blind pure luck.
Yes, luck. The thing that happens on every football field from school yard to local rec to national stadium and (used to) makes football such a great, enticing, emotional gloriously-irrational game.
Who can forget Marcus Bean's wonder goal against Gillingham in 2004? I remember few other goals around that time (Matty Rose maybe) being recalled so fondly. An Azeri linesman in 1966. Maradona in 1986. Totemic moments that make football what it is. And all glorious precisely because a team got lucky, adding to the irrational joy of it all.
Without luck, football is nothing. Sad that those with vast sums of money, who institute the ridiculously-sanitised VAR because they cannot countenance the excitement that unpredictability and jepordy bring, can never see it that way.
VAR didn't disallow Newcastle's outrageous equalising goal at Spurs which wouldn't have been possible without a very obvious handball.
That said, Frey certainly didn't immediately celebrate so probably expected it might not count. Their defence didn't really appeal for anything. You see far more attempts at this for obviously legitimate goals all the time.
